I had to comment cause my maiden name is Santana and I grew up on this music for a variety of reasons... 😉 Europa is a really good song for a Sunday afternoon.
Carlos Santana is a legendary guitarist. He and his band became popular after their performance at Woodstock, so you should check that out. Soul Sacrifice is his most famous song from the early days. But my personal favorite is called Ji Go Lo Ba (also called Jingo) which really highlights the African influence in his style. Carlos has used his fame to promote peace, especially in Africa.

The peak period of Carlos (in my opinion) Caravanserai, Lotus, Welcome, Borboleta, Amigos, Festival, Moonflower

This is "Europa"...immediately after this he plays :Samba Pa Ti", which is perhaps the finest piece for guitar in the history of the planet. Carlos has played with nearly everyone in the biz..his appearance with Sarah McClaclan doing "Angel" is phenomenal!

Santana is a huge rabbit hole. There are many eras/styles from which to choose and lots of band member changes along the way. If you're not a great musician, you're not playing in Carlos' band. I'd start with the earlier stuff and move through it chronologically.
Santana (the 1st album) - I'd go with "Evil Ways", "Jingo" or "Soul Sacrifice". You'll want to watch the epic live Woodstock perfromance of Soul Sacrifice (find the long one or part of the amazing drum solo will be missed).
Abraxas (2nd album) - I'd listen to the whole thing but for a few suggested songs, you have to do "Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen" which seamlesly flows into "Oye Como Va". "Samba Pa Ti" and "Hope You're Feeling Better" are also good choices.
Santana III (3rd album) - Again, I'd do the whole album but here are a few selections..."Batuka" into "No One To Depend On", "Taboo", "Guajira", and "Jungle Strut" are good ones.
Caravanserai (4th album) - Not one of my favorite Santana albums but I like their version of the Antonio Carlos Jobim tune "Stone Flower" that is on it.
Welcome (5th album) - Again, not one of my favorite albums. "Samba de Sausalito" is good.
Borboletta (6th album) - "Give and Take", "One With The Sun", and "Mirage" are my choices from this album.
Amigos (7th album) - Europa first appears on this album. My choices from this album include "Dance Sister Dance (Baila Mi Hermana)", "Gitano", and for a bit of a funky twist, "Let It Shine".
Festival (8th album) - "Carnaval/Let the Children Play" (must do these together) and you probably should let those flow right into "Jugando". Last one I'll add from this album is "Verao Vermelho".
Moon Flower (9th album) - This whole album is a masterpiece. Part of it is live and part is studio. All of it is amazing. Just start from the first track and let it play. Many of the songs that I recommended from prior albums are found on this one (Carnival/Let the Children Play, Jugando, Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen, Dance Sister Dance, Europa, Soul Sacrifice/Head, Hands & Feet) Other notable tracks on this one are: "I'll Be Waiting", "She's Not There" (superb cover of the Zombies tune), "Flor D'Luna (Moonflower)", "Transcendence" and finally "Savor/Toussaint l'Overture"
I'll stop there as it's kind of the end of the first few iterations of Santana (1969 - 1977). Let me know when you're ready for suggestions from 1978 - 1992.

Santana does not sing but his guitar does in so many different ways ... it will reach out and grab your heart ... it will massage your back .... It will grab your shoulder and pull you back from the edge ... and it will push you towards that same edge when needed ... Santana is the most powerful person on Earth. I will not use the word but ... He is for me!

Every time you listen to Carlos playing think of a "musical sponge". He plays amix of whatever he listened throughout his life. "Europa" is a song based on "Emporte Moi" (Alain Barriere) and "Y Volvere" (Los Angeles Negro) plus a riff he played at 18 yo. If you listen closely, suddenly he switched into "I Want You" (Marvin Gaye) and finished the perfomance playing "Ponta de Areia" (Milton Nascimento) quietly.

One of the greatest guitarists ever. Way up there with Stevie Ray Vaughan. I think I have all of their albums. And I'm talking vinyl. Absolutely one of my favorite bands of all time and one of my favorite guitarists for sure.

Have you played anything by Rory Gallagher ??? OMG He was Brilliant !!!!!! Here's one but everything he did was amazing you can't go wrong. He was from Ireland but his sound was the Blues or as I call it Delta Blues like from the Southern US which is where I come from. You have to listen even if on your own you won't be sorry.
( " i could`ve had relegion " Rory Gallagher beat club sessions ) I don't know about that spelling I just copied it lol

To hear a truly transcendent version of Europa, track down a performance where Carlos Santana is playing it as a duet with saxophonist Gato Barbieri (tenor sax). Carlos and Garo trade off solos and double the lines at various places. Truly a mind expanding experience.

The song you are thinking about is “Smooth “ by Rob Thomas featuring Carlos Santana. This is the artist I probably requested several times. I was introduced to him through my favorite uncle. He still LOVES him. He has a performance at Woodstock on here. I am not sure what it is bc I watched it YEARS ago. He is so mellow. Love ❤️ it!!!!!!

Brother, there's almost 6 decades of music beginning with Woodstock, NY. 10 grammys, 3 latin awards, etc. He's done many duets with other artist's over the years. That rabbit hole is very deep and one you should explore more often. He's the king of melody. A very humble, simple and generous man. Love the reaction from the Central Valley California. Peace brother.

What makes Carlos so special to me is that he plays the song, so many great technical guitarist use the music to show off their skill and the song gets short shrift. You can pick out a dozen santana hits and find they are all different. But they still have the Santana touch. Try some Jose Feliciano.

Love your guitar week. Thanks for that. I've really enjoyed it. I don't know if I can pin down a GOAT guitarist. I think I have a top four favorites, but not sure one could be the labeled the greatest because it's hard to compare different styles. Also, did you include Stevie Ray Vaughn? I just thought of that. He's in my top four. My personal favorites are Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, SRV, and maybe Joe Bonamossa.
