Keith is so good. I used to work at Gibson Guitars. We worked in the same building and I got to hear him play daily. Great player, great guitar builder, and nice humble guy.
This guy at the music store: "Can I help you?" "Yes, I need some strings." "What kind do you need, 6,12, bass, mandolin, lute, piano, banjo, ukulele, Chapman Stick, clavichord, harpsichord?" "Yes."
If you just saw the guitar sitting against a wall you'd almost think it was a gimmick. But when you hear him play it, it all makes perfect sense. The guitar section provides the melody, the sub basses provide bass notes to make it sound full and dense, and the super trebles provide a beautiful and colorful effect. I love that he actually makes use of the entire instrument. What a fantastic player.
I love how musicians have unique voices through their instruments. Some sound alike, and others sound completely different. This is totally unique. Thank you Keith, for sharing your soul with us.
Keith Medley's control over the tone of every single note, particularly evident in the bends, slides, and harmonic tapping, is truly mind-shattering. That's heaps of practice hours right there, ladies and gentlemen. Heaps.
Watching this again a few weeks later and i gotta say, People are rad! Life is good! I thank existence for individuals like this everyday! Truely inspiring!
my grandmother passed away last night, Yet i find myself listening to this song "Ancestors." may all the dead rest in peace if you ask me, and so does she
This is, without a doubt, my favorite video on the internet. This man is a musical genius and I would absolutely support a documentary about this process!
Hey man, I'm 17 and I love this song, loved this kind of music since I was growing up in various arid parts of the united states. Thing song takes me back to when I was walking on the salt flats, just dried cracked mud for miles and miles. Nostalgia makes you feel old, really old. I feel for you man.
Hey everybody, I'm stunned and happy for Keith that this video I produce almost a year ago has caught on all of a sudden thanks to #CNN exposure and many others too. I'm just glad that a unique creative person such as Keith gets some deserved attention. The fact that he built a masterpiece of an instrument and then mastered the playing of it is pretty astonishing. I'm so glad to have created some videos that help bring his artistry to a wider audience. Enjoy!
It staggering you put this up 10 years ago and people are still listening and still commenting. These are the sorts of skills Western society is barely hanging onto. So thanks for keeping this alive.
Keith is amazing!!.. I'm a Bass player and a drummer. So I love the low end and hard pushing. But this mesmerizes me... I can be stressed to a 9.9 and I listen to this and any stress just drains off. Instant calm.. I was surprised to find out Keith is a southern boy. I really expected he would be from the UK.. I don't know why.. Ancestors was an instant, beautiful favorite. A genius rhythmic ensemble...
Who the F--! in their right mind would ever give this an ego driven "thumbs down"?! This is pure musical beauty! I've listened to this song over 100 times and it gets better and better each time. This guy is 100% connected to the zone of musicality. LOVE this. There might have been an additional bass track playing, because some of the bass lines are clearly fingered and not open strings, but who gives a F---! He played that track too, I'm sure. Just an added part of what this beautiful song needed, and his brilliant, musical mind knew it.
I wanted to hear somebody playing harp guitar and found just people playing a song I know on the guitar with a little bass inside. But now I found a real harp guitar player. Thank you, this playing is so nice.
At first glance, I thought this video would be some kind of show off because of so many strings... Turns out I was very wrong! There's a lot of melody and masterful execution!
I am jealous of this man's amazing talent, both for building this marvelous creation and for being able to play is so beautifully! All the people making negative comments below really need to get a life!
This is without a doubt the most amazing and beautiful innovation in music within the last ... oh... forever! Mr. Medley has created 4D audio. A sound so complex, intertwined with itself and pure that, although I attempt to, I cannot describe it. Andrés Segovia would have probably made a pact with Satan to live long enough to play this instrument had he known.
Absolutely amazing!! And to see the entire instrument played. I've seen other videos where they have double string sets and what not but they don't use the whole instrument. Here, I'm seeing the most number of strings, used to perfection. What a master musician!
I’ve been interested in hearing harp-guitars lately and of all the songs I’ve heard this one REALLY stands out in a cool and ambient way! Glad I heard this gem! The supreme use of the bass strings and the tight string high notes really have been milked n mixed so beautifully!!!
This instrument, composition and musician are truly amazing! I've never seen a harp guitar before. It is a beautiful and versatile instrument. It is a real delight to listen to. I keep playing it for people to hear. Now I'm going to share it with fellow musicians. Thank you for the pleasure!! God bless you!
some music cant even have lyrics, just a mental picture of what's being conveyed, the only thing that comes to mind is the soft sunset on a western desert scene with many mountains with a cool breeze blowing, and the promise of a new day on the way, amazing song
Incredible job on the build and his composition and performance which was flawless! Mastreful and he has build a 29 string solid body with a chamber and no f holes. Can't wait to hear it!
9 people who watched this video do not understand the beauty of a guitar and how gorgeous this one is and how much i want one just like it or close to it.
VOTED BEST COMPOSITION ON THE PLANET..............................................THANK YOU SO MUCH KEITH, THIS I HV PLAYED TOO MANY TIMES TO COUNT, IT SO SOOTHS MY SOUL, N MANY OF MY FRIENDS HAVE LISTENED TO THIS SOUL STIRRING MASTER PC, YAWEH BLESS U N KEEP U MY FRIEND, A FELLOW DAVIDIC N STRING WORSHIPPER, james p in moravian falls nc
Hey, Keith, God bless your beautiful Michael Hedge's, eclectic musical traditions-channeling soul! And I promise to never moan about tuning my 12-string acoustic ever again!
I bought the CD, it arrived quickly, now one of my most prized pieces of Music. Bless You, Keith. Wish you lived in this town, I'd be there every day...in rapt happiness.
Every now and then, some guy pops out of nowhere and blows your freakin mind away! A minute ago I had never heard of this guy. Now, he's my new favorite guitar player and his 27-string monster my new favorite instrument. I'm speechless!
What is it with people from Kentucky being so amazing with music? Keith Medley, Ronald Jenkees...this is ear-gasmic. Thanks for sharing your gift Keith :)
This is incredible! Not only had he the technical know-how to build and design something like that, he can play it unbelievably well! Pretty mind-boggling.
Just ordered the CD and the wife and I can't wait to get it into our home ceiling speakers! Turn it UP!!!!!!!! YOU inspired us on a very down day. Thanks!
Ancestors - how you perform it, has got to be one of the most beautiful pieces of must ever written - especially when you perform it on the instrument you created. Marvelous! From a musician friend, book author, feature film developer and dreaming with the creative imagination onward and upward. R. Scott Lemriel
Keith is so good. I used to work at Gibson Guitars. We worked in the same building and I got to hear him play daily. Great player, great guitar builder, and nice humble guy.
Wow!!
Doesn't matter how old you are, there's no way someone could not find this amazing.
Old folks LOVE those who are at the top of the game, especially in music.
Who's still subscribed to Keith, just waiting for the day he uploads another video?
Why are songs like this NEVER long enough?
This guy at the music store:
"Can I help you?"
"Yes, I need some strings."
"What kind do you need, 6,12, bass, mandolin, lute, piano, banjo, ukulele, Chapman Stick, clavichord, harpsichord?"
"Yes."

I totally agree with your post. I'd have posted my own, but you worded it like I would have. Keith Medley is an excellent, super-talented guitarist.
And he builds them himself, his own design!!
@@Speedydogful k
@@Speedydogful just Damn!
You don't need a songb,
If Medley's music isn’t beautiful enough, he built the guitar he's playing. Artistic genius.
Not true. These are harp guitars. Lots of them around.
@@TheSiameseDreamer he built the one he plays
@@ryandavidson2502 Impressive.
After hearing this I had to pick up my guitar and play for hours to still feel comfortable saying that i play guitar. This guy is incredible.
I get the feeling he had the entire song written in his head, then created the instrument he needed to play it.
this instrument has actually been around since about 1900, but has never been widely used because of it's complexity and cost to manufacture.
Love this comment
This guy is awesome with a Cajun sause
How can anyone dislike this?!?!?! This is absolutely incredible!!!!
I love how musicians have unique voices through their instruments. Some sound alike, and others sound completely different. This is totally unique. Thank you Keith, for sharing your soul with us.
this is by far the greatest piece of music I've ever heard in my entire life

#CNN is garbage. Keith is with out a doubt one of the most talented people in my life time.
The ending....It's so mystical.. One of the few remaining Talented Artists...
I love it when you find people that play from their soul you can hear it.

I bought Keith's first CD, "Ride" when I discovered him years ago. The music is pure guitar bliss! Keith is a treasure.

Really beautiful sound, so light and elegante 👍
Those who criticize the smallest thing in this piece of music must live a miserable life.
and obviously without a high level of intelligence!
hmm, this is a bit too short for my taste... :P
The thing is, there are no small things in this music.
J'aime beaucoup cette musique, nettement moins votre commentaire. Tous les goûts sont dans la nature my dear

39 dislikes from people who cant even play a 6 string.
amen aint that the truth
if you can even play one string you appreciate this
That comment is not logical. I don’t know how to make wine but I know what I like and what I don’t like.
And they're not even Aliens, oh wait, they didn't like his music...lol
I avoid buying instruments like harp guitars etc...Too many strings attached lol
freakinn awesomme!!!!!!! Your ancestors have been well represented by your craft!!!!!!! thank you sir!!
This is totally bad ass!
This is incredible! Not only had he the technical know-how to build and design something like that, he can play it unbelievably well! Pretty mind-boggling.

is that you god
learned to play bass and guitar at the same time....Forever Alone
6-string tab? XD
Straordinaria composizione
Well you COULD just play the guitar part, but you'd need a bassist
I can't stop watching this. I've seen it like 50 times now. It's just mesmerizing. And what a perfect song name. It does take you back.
imagine replacing the strings
This guy is amazing. I am truly dumbfounded as to how anyone could/would dislike this video.
I'd hate to tune that.
Since 2011 loving this masterpiece
That is not a 27 string guitar. That's a guitar with two harps attached to it
+loeschenb also called seraph harp guitar to be 100% precise.
+loeschenb that would be 27 strings
Now that's what I call a true musician.
I would have enjoyed this better without the canned rhythm. He would be better served with a live drummer or two.
pussy
Nancie Petersen Also without the electronic enhancement.
Nancie Petersen Agreed.
Whine, whine, whine! Another probably no talent genius heard from!
Pretty much the best 4 and a half minutes you can spend on TH-cam these days.
Aside from the fact this is posted on my birthday... ...this man is awesome.
Closest thing to "holy" music I've ever heard.
