Trent is definitely one of the musical genius of our time.
And a cool, nice, and all around decent human being. In a time when that is under assault.
But NIN keeps being ignored by reaction channels, unfortunately. The Downward Spiral and The Fragile have a lot of songs that are musical masterclasses.

I very much agree. His lyrics and the way he delivers it, with all its honesty, and sincerity, the way he sings it, he MEANS it. You could really hear the pain. It’s haunting and beautiful. It always makes me cry. Because I think many of us feel that way but couldn’t word it as he did. The composition with its dissonance, absolutely perfect for what he was conveying. Whenever I hear music like this, I wanna put myself in his mindset. I don’t know him so I can’t say much about him as a person, but I can say that he has a very beautiful mind. He’s a BEAUTIFUL MIND.

Anyone interested in music theory should explore this song. The entire composition is outstanding; from trents vocals, the dissonant piano, and droning noise. I cannot listen to this song without getting chills.

Trent Reznor is amazing at emulating his emotions via his vocals. I've seen them over 20 times throughout the US at various venues and he ALWAYS brings the same energy to every single show.
NIN live is an experience. Some Bands have Songs where Fans sing along, but you along with thousands of People belting out every Song is something I’ll never forget.
Ive seen them once here in Chicago at Northerly Island. It isn’t a huge venue by any means. It is outside and right on the lake. That made it a really cool experience. It was so cold at Northerly Island that day…being right on the lake even in late May at night its coooold…it drops to about 42 degrees depending on the high of the day. It was my birthday so I remember that day really well..It was around 70 during the day and dropped like a brick at night. It was so cold Trent messed up Terrible Lie. You could hear how cold he was singing. But when he did Hurt near the end with the lights and seeing his breath because it was so cold…it was awesome. Something about the elements and how everything looked on stage mix with this song was an experience in itself. The whole show was amazing. It was my first and only time seeing NIN and for me that couldn’t get any better. Outside of that one hiccup which he handled like a pro…the show was fantastic. Ill never forget that.
That climax with drum and distortion is on of the best thing in music history.
That's probably the main reason I prefer the NIN version. Johnny Cash is an absolute legend, I just feel like the NIN version builds up to that final moment the entire song and then it hits like a truck, where the Cash one meanders a bit longer and kind of loses that momentum.
Gives me chills every single time. I always close my eyes during that bit to fully take it in; I had the privilege of seeing him live five times, and every single time I had to force myself to keep my eyes open because I didn't want to miss a single second. And it hits so much harder live, all of his music does. The perfect example of an artist whose live music is even better than the studio version.

@@felity1773 I understand, I've got nothing against the pacing of country. The song is just structured in a way that doesn't lend itself well to changes in pace. I'm pretty sure that's why Trent wasn't initially impressed with the cover, it really only stands out because of who Cash is as a person.

I listened to that song so much 20 years ago after a big breakup with "the one".
Trent is really good at making complicated rhythms and dissonant sounds and turning them into music that sounds simple and beautiful.
Yeah. A few months ago, this song popped in my head, and I remembered a sort of "creepiness" to it. The dissonance made it creepy, calm, and beautiful. Something I remembered
Such a thoughtful review of one of the most impacting song to me and probably many people. Those of us who were in our early 20s when downward spiral came out.. It was an album that just ripped you bare, and this was the pinnacle.

The beauty and greatness of this song is Trent presents it as something he is experiencing in the now and Cash presents it as reviewing a lifetime of regrets, both very powerful and personal to themselves. I personally love both versions.

Trent is definitely under-rated as a singer. If you listen to material and live shows from 89 till now, he's 1000% one of the best singers of our time, composer, musician, all of it. Someone that has specialized in his craft. Thank you again for this reaction!
thank you Beth - someone actually reacting to the original version. i know Trent has said it's really a Johnny Cash song now (like Jimi and All Along The Watchtower) but i still much prefer NIN version. i was lucky enough to see them when they toured the album back in '94 and it blew me away then and has blown me away every time I've seen them since. Trent is the modern Mozart and a true living Legend Respect & Peace
Agreed. Its an unpopular opinion because Johnny Cash is much more mainstream, but I always thought people read a lot more into his cover because of his circumstances when he sang it. If you listen objectively its mostly just Cash doing Cash. His voice is pretty much gone at that point (Not that he really had much of one in the first place - nothing wrong with that, he made some great music), but all the feeling people read into it just isn't really there when you listen and compare it to NIN. Angst is the word and every time he sings it you can feel his pain, even if you have no idea who he is or what the song is about. I think if the same were true of Cash's version it might be a lot less revered than it is.
I think of them as two different songs and love them both. Johnny Cash's definitely made the song his own and it's excellent as well.

I know you're not the one I'm disagreeing with. But the people who seek to Fade trent out of *HIS* song is fucking ridiculous. Again sorry, but JOHNNY had *NOTHING* to do with the creation and power of this song/music/composition. It was *TRENT'S* life, pain, anguish, sorrow, misery, existence, creativity, and *GENIUS* that gave birth to this *Masterpiece.* *ALL* Johnny did was _resonate_ with what *TRENT* created. Plus im not surprised that Trent says its a Cash song now, hes a man that has struggled with self worth and self belief all his life, i disagree with Trent this is and always will be his song in my eyes, i struggled with many things he struggled with and will always be able to relate with him more than cash, cash version is more a song of experience where as trent is more of a song about addiction self deprication and loneliness.
TRENT THE GOAT
It's such a different mood. The original has this grim, dark, gloomy vibe, like you're listening to the darkest corner of your mind. The Johny Cash cover is much more anthemic, like a strong set of final words. It just feels so much more impactful that someone not even half through his life emits so much sadness and desperation that inspires a person like Johny Cash.
This song and "Something I Can Never Have" always hit me so hard. There is a wonderful live version of that song as well.

THANK you, Beth, I really love Trent's voice and singing technic, so unique and expressive and yes, sometimes fragile, but also so powerful! Great, brilliant singer, musician AND composer. And I love how the crowd listened him in almost complete silence during the soft parts without co-singing. Great audience, too! :)
"Gave Up" is definitely one that always hits me hard. It's not often that a song makes you take a personal inventory of yourself to see what you have become

Though it's not a vocal, the "wind sound" you mention is one of my favorite sounds used in a song of all time. Something about it just seems to speak of the loneliness, brokenness and emptiness that comes with the song.
I like Cash's version but the original has so many nuances to it that I really miss when others cover it. Especially the dissonant and "ugly" parts.

Great video. It was really interesting to see the same person analyze both versions of the song. Also, thanks for suggesting that everyone should sing Hurt. I've been posting covers one my channel recently so, as soon as I finished watching this video, I looked up the chord changes and played through it. It was the first time I'd ever played or sung the song and I got really emotional. I'll definitely be filming a cover in the next few weeks.

I agree 100 percent of your analysis of this masterpiece of self expression, a beautiful and emotional piece of music. There are not many songs that both lyrically and musically express the artists heartfelt emotions, struggles and message, and also touches the listeners heart and soul as well.

I’m so thrilled to see you do this! The Downward Spiral is actually listed in my baby book as my “favorite music”? 😅 (baby to metalheads in 1993)
I found it again as a teenager and didn’t know that until much later.. it got me through some serious issues with depression and it’s a work of art, truly. So happy to live in the same time as Trent and see him mature as an artist and not let the industry burn him out ♥️

I learn a lot about the different techniques artists use through your observations and explaining their techniques. I would love to see you do a cover of this song. Your Wicked Games cover was wonderful, but I think a cover of this would be even better!

Everytime I hear any live version of this song by trent it makes me cry. I'd love to cover this but I doubt I could keep it together enough. It's such an emotional piece that's perfectly done
Couldn’t agree more with everything you said about this song. The atmospheric wind effect, his breathy vocals and the haunting piano melody draw you in straight away. You hit the chorus and you get the full effect of Trents amazing vocal range. To me the song is a build up of pain until there is a release and the live version adds to this, his vocal go from breathy to full force and at the end you have the band all playing then a finale that includes a huge drum hit, guitar and bass final note and a bright flash of lights. Song is perfect in every way. Beth if you enjoy this I highly recommend you watch the live version of Devin Townsends “Death of Music”. I was lucky enough to see it played live and to experience an entire audience be quite to just listen to a song was beyond amazing. Thank you so much for you channel, love your vids xx
Trent is such an underrated singer..he gives his all in every performance. The man brings the energy throughout every performance and you walk away absolutely amazed at what you just witnessed. Rock God for sure!!

Thank you SO much for doing the original of this. I feel anymore it gets overlooked due to both the Johnny Cash cover and that it wasn’t exactly singles material to begin with…. Enjoyed your bits of points on an important detail here and there both vocally and musically as to how/why the feeling of the song is created.
And, honestly, I’ve found the focus so hard on the Cash cover to where people have no idea it’s a cover AND vote near constantly that it’s better if they listen to both to be extremely grating. With how very different they are in how Cash filled out the music to a more radio-friendly form and such it’s understandably meant and manages to grab more people. - Note, I’m NOT running down the cover, it’s beautifully done, IMO. My frustration lies in the lack of awareness of and acknowledging the differing values of the original even if it may not be to the people/person's tastes.
I bring all of that up due to a point you made that I felt just summed it up and was so accurate: that each cover conveys whatever inside that person relates in some way to the original. How it’s a song that is made in a way and is presented by others to expose their personal meaning in a very self-baring way. That summation of how this song causes others to expose themselves so much through their covers of this honestly was such a beautiful way of sharing that idea that I got snuffily and teary with happiness sitting here in the cafe I frequent.

Any chance you could react to NIN's And All That Could Have Been? For me it tops even Hurt in how raw and painful it is. There's no decent-quality live versions of it like this BYIT version of Hurt though, since it took him almost 2 decades to play it live, and even then only a few times. But it's an absolute masterpiece I'd love to see your opinion on.
For the other side of his vocals, perhaps Happiness in Slavery; Wish; Last (basically anything off Broken); Somewhat Damaged? I'm Afraid Of Americans is a very interesting listen too, especially when contrasted against Bowie and considering the fact that Trent worked on the song with him.

Trent wasn't going to give Johnny permission to cover this as it is so personal to him. I saw NiN in Cleveland Ohio with my bestie in our favorite nightclub at the time. (the late-80s) I was amazed then, and I am still a huge fan!

I was at the concert were the filming of the original video to this song took place. Trent is an amazing artist and has been for 30 yrs now. I've been a fan since like 89( telling my age now lol). Great choice in songs Beth! Side note he is the entire band in the studio so you'll never find a more well rounded artist
Cash's version has the sound of an old man expressing pain over lost relationships. Reznor's version has the sound of an addict expressing regret for destroying relationships.

I believe background noise effect is intended to symbolise the deafness the protagonist experiences from... let's just say having heard a loud noise. In the studio version it is much more pronounced in one ear.

This is my all time favorite band. I'm glad you went over this, I'd love for you to do some of his earlier stuff too. Pretty hate machine is full of great songs. Ring Finger is one that comes to mind that I think you'd enjoy going over. Or Head like a hole.
I saw Nine Inch Nails in concert back in 2006 and they were amazing. One of the best live shows I’ve ever attended. I remember when Trent played “Head Like a Hole” and he got in my face and we were screaming the lyrics back and forth to each other. One of the best concert experiences I’ve ever had.

This is the first Nine Inch Nails song I’ve ever heard. Unbelievable. It always kills me when I’ve heard a band’s name a million times and never gave them a listen, then I finally hear something like this and kick myself for taking so long to come around. Awesome song.

Nine Inch Nails has always been one of my top favorite bands. His music is fucking incredible. Trent Reznor is damn brilliant. Total respect for what you said about how great this song is on how well it was written and crafted. Trent is top notch. I've been listening for many, many years now. I've been a big fan since I was 14 and I'm 33 now, so a good bit over half my life. xD Man, I feel old. hahaha, yeesh. My favorite release from Nine Inch Nails has to be the album that this was released on, The Fragile (Halo 14). It's a double album and it contained a variety of music. Calm and melodic to scary and harsh, sweet and poetic to vulgar and frightening. Nine Inch Nails is.was my favorite band, Trent Reznor is brilliant and I'm sad that he isn't producing more music. Maybe someday though! :)

The performance was at the end of the second of two concerts where they've performed the entirety of The Downward Spiral front to back. It's an amazing show, you can find the whole thing on TH-cam.
I love the NIN version of this song, but that's good point. I think it embodies the pain of the singer that is covering the song, so it can change so easily.
For me this performance hits more so cause of the crowd singing in the background. It's like we are all feeling it together 😞

I love the tension he creates in the verses, first with the Bm#4 chord, plus he'll sing the major 3rd (D#) against the minor (D) then, as well. It's already very emotional and fragile with the vocal, but he often doesn't even give you a "stable" key center to mentally anchor to while you listen. He's truly one of the greatest composers of our time.

I got tickets for June 17, 2022 at the Eden Project. Five times since 1989 I’ve seen NIN. The man is true genius.
This song and Sia’s « Breathe Me » are the kind of songs that you can relate to even if the subject is not really part of your life! The vocal performance and song writing are so personnal that it pulls you right in with them! Hard to explain!

I once walked into a karaoke contest with nothing but the clothes on my back, and got 2nd place by singing this song a capella. I made one of the judges cry with my rendition. She voted for me to win 1st place, but the other judges voted for one of the other singers. I definitely understand the power of this song. Even without any music, it is powerful.
