    Unpacking Guthries guitar genius is no small task. His abilities are beyond what most could expect to attain with a lifetime of practise. My greatest respect for him is his humility and his ability to teach. Just listening to him discussing music is always so very insightful. Thanks for providing some insights into a vast talent.

    guthrie has a very unique sense of dynamics i feel. every time i hear him improvise you can really hear the lower notes and it pops out (moreso than with other players) when he digs in and does some rock shit. great player

      Definitely! Started doing it myself more consciously and it's really rewarding in terms of articulation. I think Guthrie does it frequently and since you were teaching his style you also--maybe intuitively--picked it up. Anyways, thanks for a great lesson!

    I've been looking all over the internet for this sort of information/instructional videos. This is a great find for me, thanks you so much. I hope you can do a video about Hedras Ramos, specifically his improvised playing. (Lots of videos out there) as it seems incredibly complex and can't find anything about how he does it. Keep up the great work. Very informative series!

    I think that Guthrie is so well practiced and has so much playing time that as he's improvising the last thing running through his mind is scales. It's all ears now for him.

    • @juanantoniomusic
      @juanantoniomusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Chris Murrin Guitar While what you say could probably be true (I don't know him personally so I couldn't say); you can definitely hear the scales and concepts mentioned when he is playing. And these are a good starting point to understanding his style.
      There are also some lessons of his on TH-cam in which he mentions such scales and musical devices.
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @ChrisMurrinGuitar
      @ChrisMurrinGuitar 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yeah you're definitely right. I like to think he's played and practised them so much he no longer has to think about them as he improvises.

    this is awsome you are my go to guitar teacher for 2017 and ive had tons last year
    i want to learn how to play to play jazz fusion i want to understand what makes a jazz fusion sound.
    also how to use melodic minor/ harmonic minor in playing im getting tired of the sound of my pentatonic scale and my dorian ionian and aeolian.
    any advice?

    • @juanantoniomusic
      @juanantoniomusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man! I appreciate the love! There are tons of different ways to access a jazz fusion sound; you can work on more scales and adding them to your vocabulary, you can work on chromaticism, you can work on bebop lines, you can work on fusion lines, add notes to your pentatonics, approach notes, etc.
      If you're interested in using melodic and harmonic minor I suggest you learn the scales as well as their modes and application. I'll add some videos on the modes of these scales and their application in the future. Let me know if there is any specific thing that you want to work on and I'll add it to the future video list!

    • @SumailDota
      @SumailDota 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hI! im relly glad you asked.
      ive only just started learning all the major scale modes and pentatonic scale last year. but i ddnt quite find the sound that i want to achieve. i just so happen to want my guitar solos to be less mode predictable and more jazzy.
      and im a bit lost on where and how to approach this problem. so i guess thats my specific desire to acquire.
      my goal is to play pop rock-ish and suprise everyone from an out of nowhere jazz guitar solo.
      haha
      it does seem that jazz fusion is such an elusive not so well defined genre.
      and ive never really encountered a guitar teacher whos engaging enough to follow.
      you breaking down popular guitar players helps alot in shedding light on understanding possibilities in guitar.
      so i guess requests would be maybe a series on how to weave outside playing and other jazz scales with the foundations like pentatonic and majorscale modes.

    • @juanantoniomusic
      @juanantoniomusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sounds great! I am actually finishing a book on the topic of weaving in between scales and arpeggios and was planning on doing a series of videos on the topic once the book was out so you couldn't have had better timing on your request! I've got some videos ahead of you in the waiting list but I'll make sure to do some videos on that type of content soon enough. Thanks for the suggestion!

    Hi . I'd a query.
    It is that I own prs guitar . So I wanted to know which strings do u suggest I should use .
    1. Ernie ball rps
    2. D'addario exl110 regular gauge 10,13,17,26,36,46
    3.D'addario exl110 bt balanced tension gauge 10,13.5,17,25,34,46
    4. Elixir or rotosound
    5. Dunlop or ghs
    6. D'addario nyxl 10 regular gauge 10,13,17,26,36,46
    7. D'addario nyxl balanced tension gauge 10,13.5,17,25,34,46 .
    8. Ernie ball cobalt
    9. Ernie ball m steel though I heard that they wear the frets down.
    I'll go. With the gauge and strings that u suggest.
    Thanks please reply.
    I own prs custom 24 se and prs tremonti se. My influences include al di meola, Steve Morse , john perrucci, Steve vai, Guthrie , satch, santana, Wilson , Eric Clapton, pink Floyd and innumerable bands.
    So genre is mainly progressive rock , jazz latin fusion, blues.
    Thank you.
    I'll be hoping for an unbiased answer

    • @juanantoniomusic
      @juanantoniomusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello there! Sorry about taking so long to answer. To be honest just go with the brand that you prefer. I tend to like Elixir strings just because they tend to rust a lot slower than some of the other brands. But some people don't love the tone that they produce with the coating that they have. I use mainly Elixir 9 to 42's. I used to use 10 to 46 but ever since I started getting some hand problems I decided to go with a smaller gauge.
      Sorry again for the huge time that I took to answer!

    Guthrie Govan is very very unique guitar player, in the 80s, we had Lee Ritenour, Larry Carlton, just to name a few, and we were all trying to sound like them, then later Guthrie comes along, and takes Guitar playing to another level, and now we are all chasing again, then later as time goes by, someone else, very very unique will come along and take the Guitar playing again to an even higher level, it's bad enough as it it now.

    Excuse my ignorance... but at 8.12 when u say add the major 2nd what makes it a major 2nd wouldn't the minor 2nd be the exact same note ..why not say just add the 2nd of the minor scale you're playing.. ?

    • @juanantoniomusic
      @juanantoniomusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jamie Saunders Well a minor second would be a b2 which is different than a major or natural 2nd. But you have a point, I could just say add the 2nd of such and such scale as you mention.

    Scale weaving is already a thing I'm afraid, it's called Modulation and is pretty well known. Otherwise, good video - keep creating, might even subscribe ;)

    • @juanantoniomusic
      @juanantoniomusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey thanks for watching! I believe you misunderstood the concept of scale weaving. It is not modulation at all! Modulation is when you change from one key to another (harmonically speaking). Scale weaving is just taking a scale or arpeggio as a base scale on which you play most of your material (to maintain for example a very pentatonic sound) and then adding in the 2nd and 6th here and there to pepper in some Dorian for example.
      And yes, this way of thinking has been seen before and I believe most good players apply this all the time! I just created a way of expressing and illustrating this which is what will be coming out as a book that I have already written and is going through the publishing process (should be out around May).
      Hope that clarifies any doubts. Thanks again for watching and commenting!

      @juanantoniomusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +chinmoy lahkar Hey! I'll add it to the waiting list. At the moment my channel is in a bit of a hiatus though. I live in Puerto Rico and we are still recovering from hurricane Maria (no power, water, internet, cel signal). Ill start checking his stuff out for the moment (in the small glimpses of phone data that arrive) As soon as I get some of the services back home I can get back to work. :/ Thanks for the suggestion!

    wouldn't one call this a bebop application? approach notes that then land on consinent notes on strong beats?

    • @juanantoniomusic
      @juanantoniomusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ian Parker Which area of the video are you referring to? The pentatonic weaving section?

    • @ianparker5007
      @ianparker5007 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Juan Antonio yeah, exactly. The more I start exploring, the more I am finding some real value in bebop, as in outlining arpeggios with approach notes, but being mindful of where the chord tones fall on a beat.

    • @ianparker5007
      @ianparker5007 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Juan Antonio so consider min pent as like just a min 11. in prof shred #2, he talks about this at length.

    • @juanantoniomusic
      @juanantoniomusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't exactly call it approach notes since these are usually one note (or two if it's double) that are chromatically or diatonically above or below a chord tone. In the case of pentatonic weaving there is no specific order; you just imagine the pentatonic scale and insert whichever other modal extension you prefer. But I do believe Guthrie also uses approach notes!
      I absolutely agree though that there is a ton of value in bebop. The harmonic and theoretical bits of information are invaluable. And the vocabulary is great, especially when looking to play jazz rock fusion!

    • @juanantoniomusic
      @juanantoniomusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could consider the Minor Pentatonic scale as a Min11 arpeggio and use approach notes over it! That's a great idea!

    i think Guthrie govan have a feel.. he just play 3 note, and we will know it's Govan style... note slide, microbending,cromatic,technic and more... the tittle is not for me... maybe just Guthrie govan style licks. we can get so many lesson style lick of Govan.. but it's not secret and concept..
    Talk less do more my friend!!! sorry i'm a big fans of Guthrie Govan... cheers!

    Great copycat player, but I suspect very little imagination when improvising or writing, not sure I like it when people use popular guitarist names in their title when it really isn't that needed, could be your own lesson, but then maybe less popular to click on eh ;)

    • @juanantoniomusic

      Hey there, I do have a bunch of lessons and performances that are not based around other guitarists which you can check out as well (most of my videos are actually not based around other players). I also have some original jam material on my Instagram account. But you are right, the videos that get requested and viewed the most are the ones where I copy and explain some of what these guys are doing.
      I am starting to work out some original material and hope that I can get an EP out there by 2018. I am also working out a series of jams and collaborations in which I just play with some of my friends and colleagues. I am gearing up to do more "original" content in the next year but of course I have to satisfy the viewers and their desires. Doesn't hurt that I get to learn all kinds of cool stuff from the masters as well! :)
