Mate, bless you for checking out the Cocteaus. Liz Fraser was only 17 when they started, and many of their early gigs used to be cut short when her voice would just give out. A very different, raw, jagged feel to their first LP Garlands compared to this "cathedral of sound" phase. I saw them in 1994, and it's the only time I've ever been moved to tears by a live vocal performance.
My all-time favorite band. It’s pronounced Cock-toe FYI. Really looking forward to you diving further, she/they are INCREDIBLE. The most beautiful music ever created IMO. And all the vocals are her btw. 👍
I grew up listening to Cocteaus' Elizabeth Fraser has one of my all time favourite voices, etherial! Saw them in concert numerous times. she has always been quite introverted and live she would often have her back to the audience. Check out a duet she did with her close friend Jeff Buckley "All Flowers In Time Bend Toward the Sun"
My first visit to your channel....And You are in my top five already for not only checking out the Cocteau Twins...but your reaction was genuine and in my book, Right on target!!!!!
It gives me a real kick seeing people getting into CT for the first time. If you want to explore some more I recommend Heaven Or Las Vegas but you are spoiled for choice really because their back catalogue is such high quality.
I was late to the Cocteau Twins by a few years, but I very clearly remember absolutely loving this album and this track. I had it on cassette. That's how long ago it was. But I still love the vocals. This is pretty much the same tempo as Road, River, and Rail from Heaven or Las Vegas, which was my first "HOLY HECK" moment with their music. :) Thank you for your continued reactions to this music!
Fantastic! This album, together with Blue Bell Knoll, was my intoduction ro Cocteau Twins. Such gorgeous music and I love seeing your reaction to their songs.
Got a new subscriber, young man... I appreciate your digging into your 'parent's generation'! I spent much of the early 90s making those 'lyrics' my own. :) Let them bring you on a trip through the universe... via your soul.
WOW this comment made my day. YAY!! Thank you so much. Means a lot to me. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch my reaction. Love music like this.
I thought for the longest time that she was singing in a Scottish Gaelic. But she was just inventing her own tonal vocabulary, probably because she thought pop lyrics were bogus! Let's just say it was Quenyan Elvish. It definitely sounds like the incantations of pixies and fairies in the moonlight, weaving sour green ringlets... check out "Song to the Siren" It is a stunning track she recorded with 'This Mortal Coil', an amazing collaboration between 'Cocteau Twins' and 'Dead Can Dance' This is probably the only song sang by Liz that many people recognize.. It is excruciatingly beautiful and must have had an impact on Sinead O Conner...
If you're interested in see my other reactions to Cocteau Twins I have a playlist on my channel. Under their name and you will see that I did a reaction to "Song to the Siren". One of my first songs that I heard from them. 😊
@@gabe.absolute awesome! "Song to the Siren" was not actually Cocteau Twins, it was from a beautiful album by 'This Mortal Coil" called "It'll End inTears' w Liz singing as guest vocalist. You may have also heard "Teardrop' by Massive Attack, sung by Luz. She sang on several tracks from that amazing album... Mezzanine...sublime!!
Just so you understand Elizabeth was inventing her own language or words to her songs, not that they had any meanings but had no meanings but conveyed emotions and meaning through the sounds... they are the only music band to do this... later she did some songs using English with Peter Gabriel and also with Massive Attack...
They are not the only band to do this. Sigur Ros, for example have an entire invented phonetic language. Also tons of Cocteau Twins music is in English, including this song, it's just gibberish.
If you're just discovering the Cocteau Twins - I have at least three things to say (a) make it a priority to hear everything from 1982-6 including the b-sides and other rare songs, (b) ignore "Mr Knowles" - he's not just deluded, he's also hearing-impaired, (c) try reading the 4AD book Facing The Other Way, it may change the way you interpret Elizabeth Fraser (amongst others) But = in future reactions, please keep quiet as the song plays!
They got the band name from an early Simple Minds song “Cocteau Twins” (which was about this group of people who admired Jean Cocteau or something). Naturally, SM ended up changing the name of that song at some point in the future.
Does my heart good for young people to just discover the CTs after i've been listening to them for nearly 40 years...
Thank you. So happy I am discovering them

Cocteau is pronounced Cock-toe. The band most likely adopted it from the surname of French surrealist Jean Cocteau.

No disrespect, but you knew this brilliant song before you made this video..
What? I actually didn't. Thank you
