In Dragons Dogma, where the after you defeat the big bad dragon, a giant hole opens up in the middle of the capital city and swallows half of it, you get blamed for it, you jump down the hole, turns out its a portal to god, you fight god and you then become god and your pawn becomes you. And this is an oversimplification
Cant remember most of the times, but one does stand out simular too Robs instance: on Skyrim, when you're just raiding and looting but discover the old dwarfs cave city under the map, really captivated me to the point I thought I was discovering what happened to them & maybe even finding one or something like that still living etc, just remember having a real sense of discovery on a game I played for many, many days 🤣
Kena Bridge of Spirits on Master difficulty for the trophy "Master Spirit Guide" - I didn't expect a Pixar cartoon game would turned out to be a Souls like playthrough

The first Scarecrow moment in Arkham Asylum when you think the game has crashed, nothing has made me so confused since lmao
My recent surprising moment was in Horizon Forbidden West, during the mission where you go to retrieve the Poseidon sub function. There is a moment where you're solving a puzzle, and in the process, restore power to the area, and suddenly you're surrounded with the lights of Las Vegas. It's beautiful and familiar and probably my favorite moment in the whole game. I had no idea it was going to light up like that. It was amazing.

That Siofra River area in Elden Ring is so stunning. One of my favourite areas of any Soulsborne games.
Mine is a very simple thing that my little cousin actually discovered herself. She was playing SSX3 on Gamecube, & she pushed the yellow thumbstick down & the snowboarder did a (wheelie?). Me & my baby brother looked & were like "They can do that?" We had played that game for so long & had no idea that it was even an option. Our little cousin playing around with the controls, barely knowing what she was doing, figured that 1 out herself. And ever since we added that move to our runs & got even higher scores.
The Sly Cooper games are great! I feel like they are soo underrated. It is always fun to see Rosie or Ash giving them some well deserved recognition!
We def need a new Sly 🦝🐢🦛
I wasn't expecting to become so emotionally attached to the characters in Ghost of Tsushima; it's one of my favourite games.

I've only put about 8 hours into Elden Ring, but I also discovered the Siofra River elevator. I assumed it was an elevator to a boss, and I saw a few blood stains at the top so I assumed there may be a trap. So I hit the compression switch and quickly jumped off the elevator to wait and see what happened. Oh, nothing, just a normal elevator. I turned around to throw the switch on the wall to recall the elevator, but it seemed like forever until I was able to interact with it. Finally I was able to throw the switch, then waited for what seemed like an age for the elevator to come back. "What on earth is down there?" I wondered. And then I caught my first glimpse through the gaps in the wall... and my mind was blown. I haven't experienced that feeling in a game since I came to Blackreach in Skyrim. I call it the Blackreach Effect.
Just sitting and listening to The Boss tell me what her real mission was at the end of MGS: Snake Eater. After all these years, I still can't believe it. Such a great moment.
Now that is a great moment in gaming history
In the original Bioshock you play as a character named Jack and when the airplane your on crashes into the ocean, that's when you end up in the underwater city of Rapture and after killing Andrew Ryan Atlas the character who has been helping you get to this point reveals that not only is he really the supposedly dead Frank Fontaine you've been mentally conditioned to obey him whenever he says the words "would you kindly" that's a moment that really caught me off guard.
Man I can't believe you spoiled it for me. I was just getting to that point and now you've ruined it for me. I took the time to read your comment and be a good person and you rob me of a wonderful twist :(

Rob describes it perfectly, moments in Elden Ring can be mind boggeling.
When in God of War, Atreus stopped listening to my commands. Not sure why, but that blew me away. It’s just like a rebellious pre-teen moment
Mine was in Concrete Genie (I hadn’t looked into anything about the game, but after completing it saw that people had used this moment in their thumbnail) where your 2D Genies turned bad and came out of the wall as a dark 3D monster. Totally caught me off guard. This ‘painting’ game then turned into a fighting game. Absolutely didn’t see it coming at all
A game that surprised me was in Castlevania: SoTN when after battling through and beating Alucard, I suddenly had a whole "other" castle to go through.
The ending of FEZ.
That one blew my mind.
Tron-lines and trippy secrets.

I would have never expected Elden Ring. The map is impressive and the every area just gets bigger!

I had the same thing as Rosie with Sly Cooper! I played it for 20 minutes or so on a Playstation at a local electronics store when I was a child, but I didn't know back then what the game was called. And for YEARS after I remembered this blue racoon but never found out what the actual game was that I played. That is until I watched a video on this very channel not too long ago where you talked about it and I almost couldn't believe my eyes! :D
If you listen closely on that elevator in Elden Ring, you can hear a faint “What a thrillll 🎶 “.
I was pleasantly surprised at how sifu made me feel like I was actually training to fight the next boss as in I had to get better as a player to progress, whereas something like elden ring I can overcome something with a good enough build
I played the Sly series backwards and thought the first game made a great ending between Carmelita and Sly. Then thieves in time came out and I loved that just as much. Still waiting on that movie that was announced years ago...

The greatest, most horrifying twist is still Silent Hill 3

A game that completely surprised me was the last chapter of Hatoful Boyfriend. The game itself already is pretty weird to begin with, being a dating and high school simulator with pigeons. But then the last chapter suddenly turns into a murder mystery and I completely forgot this was still supposed to be about pigeons, despite still seeing all those pigeons around me.
The DDLC Big Event (at least for the first release) was shocking, but honestly less uncomfortable than the conversation the day before that where you have Sayori have a conversation with LITERALLY EVERY RED FLAG for someone at risk of self-harm and your character's dialogue responses are in both cases basically the worst possible things you could say to someone in that situation without actively trying to hurt them. Going back to just regular cursed games stuff after than was almost a reprieve in comparison.

Just so you know Rob. That elevator ride takes exactly 1 minute. I timed it :P On the topic though. Yakuza, basically the entire series, but mostly, the first time you do karaoke, 24 Hour Cinderella, and Baka Mi Tai are 2 standouts. Never saw it coming.

So cool that just by listening to Rob talk about Elden Ring, I know exactly which part of the map he's referring to. Now that's level design.
A gaming moment I didn't expect was the ending of Rakuen. I have never cried as much because of a game, like I did after finishing Rakuen :D I don't know how, but I didn't see the ending coming at all. That game broke me and I will never recover.
I'm surprised Rob didn't choose mgs2 with the cartwheeling catastrophe that was raiden
I found the location Rob mentioned last night.
When the elevator finally stopped I stood there for a couple of minutes, looking at that place and thinking about the amount of effort that was put into this game. In addition to the huge open world we can see, there is also a whole underground one to be discovered.
This game is going to consume hundreds of hours of my life.

Well since Rob didn't do it I guess I'll have to, my surprise moment was in Metal Gear Solid 2. At the very end of the game after you beat the last boss, my audio completely cuts out. So you can't hear Snake and Raiden talk about the patriots nor the end game credits. It wasn't until I got the mgs collection that I could hear the ending to mgs2. I beat that game so many times and heard that speech, I ask my friends and they had no clue.
Metal Gear Rising Revengeance. A lot of reviews at the time weren't very positive and a friend of mine who's really big into Metal Gear (I am as well just not as much) had it, said he hated it and gave it to me to borrow. He said if I liked it enough that I could keep it. Popped it in not really expecting anything to write home about. Finished it the same day. Absolutely loved it! The combat, the ridiculous action, the music! It really was like one of Otacons Japanese animes!
Batman Arkham Knight. Was expecting an alternate noncanon ending where you became The Batman Who Laughs.
Batman Who Laughs hadn’t been created until a few years after Arkham Knight released.

Bloodborne is such a great game. I felt the same way Dave playing through the game. Rob when I found the elevator to Sofria River Well I was super under leveled and still wearing my starter armor and starter weapons. My mind was blown too. The elevator goes on forever. It is an important area if you want to find the lost city of Nokron later in game. I still haven't made it to Nokron yet but yes Elden Ring is amazing. I haven't played much else since it released. I've been really enjoying it. Exploring. Finding cool stuff. I'm 80 plus hours in and level 65. Still have a bunch of demigods to kill. I feel as if I'm just getting started.
Two From Software mentions in one video of games being surprising. Yup. That seems about right.

In the 90s there was this one game on my mom's Windows PC. You somehow had to sort mice or rats by their colour. They were always moving in a line and you could take some out of the line and put them back somewhere else.
I have never found this game or any evidence of it since.
Maybe someone here knows?

The moment I first saw the big whatever-the-pants-it-was that you fought in Xenoblade X (you know, the bit like the Diamond Weapon bit in FF7)... I was ready to marry that game then and there. What a stunner!
When the supernova triggered in Freespace 2 was also a big surprise.
(Oh, Ash mentioned DDLC? Yes, that game DEFINITELY deserves its own top-five list of shocking moments! The bit when you could spend the night with... a less-than-entirely intact Yuri in the classroom but were actually expected to exit the "game" was quite a ride.)
I like how Elden Ring copies what Skyrim did with Blackreach and everyone acts like it was something they've never seen before. All they did was expand it and remove loading screens cause of the new tech. More games should have a dual-layer world though cause it is a great idea.
When Rob started describing it I immediately thought of Blackreach. I'm with you, more games should do something like that. It's way more indie but I recommend action-adventure game World to the West for this very reason: it has a nicely sized map of the world, plus an entire underground map that spans almost the same area. Very cool example of a literal double layered map.
Similar to Rob's entry, but when you enter Blackreach(?) in Skyrim. After exploring above ground for hours, finding that felt like another world.
Honourable mentions: Mass Effect Andromeda, where you first activate a remnant monolith thing and the smoke forces you to make a break for it. The rest of the game is quite average.

Going old school here but the finale of conkers bad fur day (N64) sets itself up as a big fight with the panther king (I think?), then swerves big time into something rather different as a xenomorph bursts out of his tummy. Can’t believe that anyone saw that coming. I certainly didn’t.

When Don Yates had his guard shoot vidal - 1 Mark purposely killing another. I think that's the only time that has happened in a hitman game so I never actually expected that.
