"It's like having a big, bulky book on lockpicking and just bashing the lock in with it." I would absolutely love to have puzzles like that, honestly. Where the item use is obvious, but how your character accomplishes it is just ridiculous.
Fantastic series with an even more fantastic soundtrack. Carlos Viola deserves so much credit. I hope he finds much success in creating video game soundtracks in the future. I used to just listen to the soundtracks for all the games all the time. Mesmerizing.
Alright, I‘m very late to this, but The Last Door just released for the PS4. I can‘t stress enough how great these two seasons are. And the crow moment? Amazing! No jump scare, but deeply atmospheric and unsettling.
Thanks Scarf for an actual video, I really enjoy your stuff but got sick of April Fools joke videos about 5 years ago, glad you went with a true upload.
hell yeah im glad you finally checked out this series, i had an absolute blast finishing both 1 and 2 100% on steam one of the top point and clicks released anytime recently imo cant give you enough props for showing this off, this game needs more people to know about it
I always get really excited when you cover these horror adventure games. You have such a good grasp on them and I think they often end up being some of your best episodes, this one being no exception. Keep up the good work.
YES!! I followed this game since it was announced, and played every episode as they were released. Also, I checked the forums once in a while, and the developers were very kind and close to the comunity, which is nice. I can't thank you enough for reviewing it and giving the praise it deserves. Please, share your thoughts about Season 2 when you finish it. It has a somewhat different dinamic, in the size of the maps at least.
The whole using sound thing without visuals reminded me of certain bad ends in Corpse Party: Blood Covered. Most obviously the one where you (i don't remember what character you're playing as at the time) get buried alive, but there's a few others as well...Corpse Party really jumps around with how it shows deaths. Sometimes it shows close up graphic images, sometimes you just get the sound, sometimes you get the actual animation, and sometimes it's a mix.
As a sound designer i can say that is EXACTLY the kind of feeling i want people to get from my work. I love telling a story with just sound and who ever did this game is incredible
I now realize how much sense the low res pixelart makes for a lovecraftian horror game because of how it requires you to use your imagination. And in a game about unkowable horrors your imagination might be your worst enemy.
Happy April Scarfulhu Day! :D The graphics are indeed unnerving, not least how all the faces are featureless... That cthulhu plushie is just too cute ^_^
With each episode taking 30 minutes to an hour if you don't know what you're doing" *The second episode of season one had taken me 2 hours to complete* 😂
The reference of Alone in The Dark starts with the first scene (the hanging scene). It's how Jeremy Hartwood kills himself, with also a suicide note, same window in the attic, etc... This Last Door game is a masterpiece, loved it
Have you ever tried the four Trilby games? If not, you might enjoy them in a similar way that you liked this one. Not quite as Lovecraftian, but a nice little horror-ish experience. It starts with "5 Days a Stranger". All of them are nice short experiences.
Do you say it's not quite as Lovecraftian because it's set in the present and future? I thought it was very Lovecraftian, but my knowledge of Lovecraft is minimal.
I would say that they were less intentionally Lovecraft, and more a tribute to several different horror genres. Then again, it has been years since I played them. I could be remembering other games and mixing them together, lol
Come to think on it, it's really the last two games that delve heavily in to the eldritch pain dimension weirdness - that's the part that I remember most though.
9:15 - 9:24 a flash from a villain from Shadow of the Comet requesting aid from Cthullu in the most funny cheesy, wacky an cliché way possible, all to kill a scene suposed to be serious. I laughed a lot of it, but not before imitating that guy (or what's left of him) evoking Cthullu!
This. I've had this game for I don't even know how long, but never got around to it. Watching this video made me remember the name, and I checked my Steam library to know for sure, and yep - I have the Collector's Edition of it. Looks like I've got something to install and play, now!
When I first played the last door I actually found more connections with Poe than Lovecraft examples of this are of course the ravens and the blind black cat which to my knowledge is a direct Referrence to one of poe's works the black cat, but than again what do I know either way great vid great game
I only just thought of this since I stumbled upon it on my computer today, but you should check out The Rapture Is Here And You Will Be Forcibly Removed From Your Home. It is a fantastic presentation of multiple Lovecraft tales-- not all mixed together unless you goof up playing it.
I just bought this game today. I backed Blasphemous on kick started and wanted to see what else the devs had done and low and behold it was a Lovecraft inspired game! Just my jam.
Oh shoot, it's this thing! It's very surprisingly good. Also, Vs in Latin make a w sound. And the e at the of Videte is silent. The rest was mostly alright.
I don't know if you take suggestions, but I would recommend to you a small indie point 'n click adventure horror game on steam, called The Darkness Within: In pursuit of Loath Nolder. It is inspired by Poe and Lovecraft, but doesn't get in your face with Lovecraftian monsters and takes it's own spin on the themes and concepts common in his works by putting them into a detective setting and giving you tools to investigate and try to find out what really happened. I absolutely adore its visual style and pre-rendered enviroments and the voice acting is really good in my opinion. I think you should check it out, if you get the time to do so. I would be glad to hear your opinion and/or criticism on it at some point ps. Some of the later puzzles in the game can be EXTREMELY challenging so don't be afraid to use a guide if you get seriously stuck.
Oh hey, a game I've actually played! It's been a while though - I haven't actually played episode 4 yet. For those interested there are flash versions of the first few episodes (which is where I first played the game right back when episode 1 was released).
Have you heard/played the game Scratches before? I feel that game is not very talked about, but in my opinion is very great at building atmosphere and pacing itself - until the very end where it ruins it. Regardless, great video and I might pick The Last Door up.
All right, 3 minutes in the video and you got me so interested that i brought this game right now on GOG. Sorry Connor, I will watch this video after i finish Season 1.
Since you mentioned Gabriel Knight again, I don't know how many of them there are, but are all good? I think I have one from a gog.com summer sale or something but I haven't played it as of yet.
The 3rd on is my personal favorite, but I'd heartily recommend all three. And definitely play them in order, there's strong story continuity, but brace yourself for changes in game engine and design.
I like you. I just arived, but I like you. Saw your comment on a comment etiquette vid and noticed your awesome profile pic/Channel pic and checked it out. Good job, on this vid. I'll surely watch some more tommorrow.
The Last Door might be a good example of Lovecraftian horror done right, but I think there would be a better subgenre of horror that would make for more effective Lovecraftian horror in games overall. ...Metahorror. After all, what better way to frame the abject terror of things beyond our comprehension than by reaching outside the boundaries of the game itself?
DeAnne Dixon If you still want to know, LordMinion777 may be who you are thinking of. (Though as far as I know, he's only played through the first season.)
Your talk about how horror becomes cute and over done a very good example of this I like to think is Freddy Kruger he was a horrror character who also has a very sick since of humor but some how in the 1980s they over saturated him and there were even freddy dolls....for kids. Come on kids have this child killer who now haunts teens and murders them and is evil and has a claw for a hand. Have him as a cute little stuffed toy! That is a great idea huh? Though I will admit I have done some Cthulhu cutification as well....only one Hamthulu it was a joke between friends and I made art of it. But like that really it I have done other Cthulhu art of him being scary. But yea. Am I talking to much?
"It's like having a big, bulky book on lockpicking and just bashing the lock in with it."
I would absolutely love to have puzzles like that, honestly.
Where the item use is obvious, but how your character accomplishes it is just ridiculous.
those crows did a murder what a delightful pun
Fantastic series with an even more fantastic soundtrack. Carlos Viola deserves so much credit. I hope he finds much success in creating video game soundtracks in the future. I used to just listen to the soundtracks for all the games all the time. Mesmerizing.
Wow. An actual video on April Fools Day? Now that's a prank!!!
reverse psychology in a nutshell
Alright, I‘m very late to this, but The Last Door just released for the PS4. I can‘t stress enough how great these two seasons are.
And the crow moment? Amazing! No jump scare, but deeply atmospheric and unsettling.
oh I jumped
Didn't even watch the video and I didn't know this channel before, but 15 minutes about TLD? Instant like and very likely instant subbing.
P.S.: you'll love the second season mate. Cheers for the video. I'll catch up with your work now, earned a sub with this quality content.
Thanks Scarf for an actual video, I really enjoy your stuff but got sick of April Fools joke videos about 5 years ago, glad you went with a true upload.
It's actually just a coincidence that this came out on April 1st. I wanted to finish it a week earlier but couldn't get it done in time lol.
So happy to see a glowing review of this game! One of my absolute favorites!
hell yeah im glad you finally checked out this series, i had an absolute blast finishing both 1 and 2 100% on steam one of the top point and clicks released anytime recently imo
cant give you enough props for showing this off, this game needs more people to know about it
Oh hell yes. I've followed this game since the first episode came out, and more people really need to play it.

You said two german words that are actually the right translation of what you wanted to say and you pronounced them more or less right
Finally, finally, a TH-camr on my subscribe list who doesnt use the occasion for a "funny" april fools video. Thanks so much!
Wait, so are you telling me I've been using my lock picking book wrong? Well I guess that explains why the locks can't be used more than once.
Also, you've got some weak-ass locks, or a strong-ass book.
Magus Marquillin maybe both. Lesson is don't buy locks, or books, from that shady guy in the ally.
would love to see season 2! can you do a part 2 to this?
A-An... actual video on April Fools?? This is like, 10 times better than Christmas.
With each episode taking 30 minutes to an hour if you don't know what you're doing" *The second episode of season one had taken me 2 hours to complete* 😂
Is... is this a real video on April Fools? Scarf, I.. I love you. You are an oasis amidst this desert of April Fools mediocrity.
Lovecraft done right is too good an experience to pass by. Just bought the two games on your word, hope they warrant the praise you gave them.
I just want to replay the first two seconds of this video over and over...so many GK points...!
The reference of Alone in The Dark starts with the first scene (the hanging scene). It's how Jeremy Hartwood kills himself, with also a suicide note, same window in the attic, etc... This Last Door game is a masterpiece, loved it
you should def tackle season two! i love adventure games and horror, expecially lovecraftian, thanks for giving this amazing game a shout out!
Another great episode. Thanks Scarfy!
I have never heard of these games. Now I am very much intrigued, this seems right up my alley. Thanks for bringing it to may attention.
I'd just like to thank you Scarfulhu for not making a shitty April Fools Joke video.
Okay, thank you for warning us about that Jumpscare. For people like me, I appreciate it a lot!
Appreciate you Scarfulhu!
Also I think Bloodborne really does justice to Lovecraft since the dlc has a section based on one of his novels.
Have you ever tried the four Trilby games? If not, you might enjoy them in a similar way that you liked this one. Not quite as Lovecraftian, but a nice little horror-ish experience. It starts with "5 Days a Stranger". All of them are nice short experiences.
Trilby's Notes is the only good one.
I love that game series.

The ad timed the jumpscare perfectly.
I just saw this video and I'm 100% behind this review. TLD is amazing.
Wow. An ACTUAL video on April 1st. Who would've thought.
I have now played both this (S01) and Darkside Detective, and I must admit I like the tone/writing of the second a lot more.
This. I've had this game for I don't even know how long, but never got around to it. Watching this video made me remember the name, and I checked my Steam library to know for sure, and yep - I have the Collector's Edition of it. Looks like I've got something to install and play, now!
Congrats on 40,948 sub's, been here since your Icewind dale video
yeah a scarfhulu's video ! now this saturday is dandy !
Fun fact. In the book store in episode 3, there's a book by Howard Phillips Lovecraft.
This is a great video- I really want to play the game now! And thanks for counting down the jump scare, I'm easily startled XD
This game is AWESOME! Defenately one of my favorite Point-And-Click adventures!
When I first played the last door I actually found more connections with Poe than Lovecraft examples of this are of course the ravens and the blind black cat which to my knowledge is a direct Referrence to one of poe's works the black cat, but than again what do I know either way great vid great game
But what about the first door, Scarf? Nobody ever talks about the first one
I want that first door upstairs you can never open to be the Last Door (although I guess death is the last door)
hahaha the end, love it man
When i finish the game i will see ya video!
CAN'T WAIT!
I only just thought of this since I stumbled upon it on my computer today, but you should check out The Rapture Is Here And You Will Be Forcibly Removed From Your Home. It is a fantastic presentation of multiple Lovecraft tales-- not all mixed together unless you goof up playing it.
Great material. I think I have to take a look at that game.
I just bought this game today. I backed Blasphemous on kick started and wanted to see what else the devs had done and low and behold it was a Lovecraft inspired game! Just my jam.
Oh darn, I was hoping for another episode of Let's Pray :P
Seems like the kind of horror game I could actually stomach. Might give it a go when I have time. Great video!
Have you ever played Contradiction? It's an FMV detective game with some... interesting acting. Love all of your video.
I've been meaning to pick it up! Looks like something I'd enjoy for sure.
7:08 - I am reminded of "Facts concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family" by Lovecraft. If that is intentional, then that's pretty neat.
The first season was really good, but I was less keen on the second season. Would love to hear what you think when you do end up finishing it.
Oh shoot, it's this thing! It's very surprisingly good.
Also, Vs in Latin make a w sound. And the e at the of Videte is silent. The rest was mostly alright.

You know what else does cthulhu right?
A night in the woods
The Game Kitchen's next project is a 2D, pixel art action-platformer called Blasphemous that looks quite interesting. blasphemousgame.com/
Now that Game is a true masterpiece with a sequel in the future
God I love your videos
Scrabble Winner PAPA SCARF
Yes! Pretty neat!
FUCK I REMEMBER THESE GAMES HOLY SHIT I PLAYED THE ENTIRE SERIES IN MY COMPUTER CLASS BACK IN MIDDLE SCHOOL
Love u scarfy.
I actually have something worth watching today. o/
Well, I'm glad I could sell you on the game in 3 minutes. Hope you enjoy it!
I played the first season when I was in middle school, and it was amazing.
I saw The Last Door and I saw Lovecraft and I knew I'd love this, and I do. I love these games so much!
There is a footage of a fps game at 8:55, do someone has the name plz ?
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth

Scarfulhu good video tho!
Yay someone who knows about this game
Since you mentioned Gabriel Knight again, I don't know how many of them there are, but are all good? I think I have one from a gog.com summer sale or something but I haven't played it as of yet.
I haven't finished the third one yet, but the first two are great.
I guess I'll have a look for myself, then. It would be a shame if it sat on my library and went to waste. :D
The 3rd on is my personal favorite, but I'd heartily recommend all three. And definitely play them in order, there's strong story continuity, but brace yourself for changes in game engine and design.
finna nut
this game is awesome i really did enjoy it, and also the second game, but i still have to finish that one.
I like you. I just arived, but I like you. Saw your comment on a comment etiquette vid and noticed your awesome profile pic/Channel pic and checked it out. Good job, on this vid. I'll surely watch some more tommorrow.
You should do the colonels bequest by sierra
Why hello, Mr. Rahkshii in the background. What did you do with Kopaka Nuva?
Great video really enjoyed it will definitely be getting these games :p
The Last Door might be a good example of Lovecraftian horror done right, but I think there would be a better subgenre of horror that would make for more effective Lovecraftian horror in games overall.
...Metahorror.
After all, what better way to frame the abject terror of things beyond our comprehension than by reaching outside the boundaries of the game itself?
Sadly the end is kinda meh. Still, it's an awesome game and the devs are such nice people!
Not a April fool nice to see
8:41
Derpula
caddicarus liked..........
nice video
Did you ever complete the second season, Scarf?
oh wow
Gabriel Knight and Prisoner of Ice. Make a video.
They're on the list, so they'll happen at some point.
Scarfulhu But... Gabe wants a review
Yeah but when MNOG tho?
Maybe sooner, maybe later. We shall see!
Oh, how you play with my heart!
hi
Very interesting little pixelated point & click game. You kind of ruined the jump scare for me by counting down the jump scare, but that's just me.
Youre aware that Bloodborne did Lovecraft pretty well right?
So I've heard, but unfortunately I have no PS4. Would love to play it!
I love season one, but season two put me off and I never finished it
Never seen scary birds in a game? Ninja Gaiden my dude, Ninja Gaiden.
I remember this game! Someone like Markiplier made a lets play on it I think? I forget who..
DeAnne Dixon If you still want to know, LordMinion777 may be who you are thinking of. (Though as far as I know, he's only played through the first season.)
ECK!
