You can spread an old sheet on the floor before you kids dump the Legos. When they're done, you just pick up the sheet and "pour" the Legos back in the container.

My parents told me to clean my room but never ever showed me how. I didn’t know I could actually throw stuff away. I sat down to sort everything, then got distracted by some books and three hours later was still sitting on my floor reading. The floor wasn't visible because of all my clutter.
My biggest decluttering regret is decluttering the photos of my room my parents had taken! 🤣
If you have kids, help them! Show them how. Try and figure out something that works with them. Don't let them sit in their mess for hours, that's just ignoring, really.
My best memory of my grandma is how she came in with a bunch of trash bags and opened my eyes to the joy of decluttering. It was mind-opening.

My grandma, too, is the one who showed me how and made it a game. Make the bed first, then Everything on floor went onto the bed, and I cleaned in a circle. Then the stuff on the bed. Then stand on a chair and look at bedroom with a mirror! You will notice what is out of place 🙂

    • @LissaDIY
      @LissaDIY 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

@@beautifulhomemaking that mirror trick is so interesting, that's like taking a picture of your space. You notice much more stuff that's out of place and that clashes, when looking at a photo.

Yes, this! I have adhd and what made “sense” to my mom, made no sense at all to me. I didn’t feel like I could ask because she was already frustrated with me.

I taught my kids how to tidy their bedrooms. But I had two levels of tidy. One was the kid standard, the other was the mom standard. I didn’t expect the more organized mom standard every time. I let my kiddos know which standard I expected for the day. Sometimes I let them choose, and sometimes they chose the mom standard. May not work for every household, or every kiddo, or mom, but just another option. It’s important for your kids to learn before they get to the preteen/teen years. You’ll need to really respect their personal space and things and they certainly will resent you coming into their room to tidy their stuff.

I have moved over 20x in life. I always setup and complete my bedroom. It is the area where I rest. It is an area that I can go to during unpacking the rest of the house and see calm. My bedroom is my sanctuary! 2nd was always the bathroom. I ould shower and get ready for the day. Then the kitchen. I know most people think they need the kitchen first to feed the family. We lived on sandwiches and takeout for a week while I got the house set up. Then a nice family meal at the end. But ALWAYS will be my bed and bath so I can be my best for my family!

We had drywall installed in our closet under the stairs so the deep black hole part was completely blocked. Same guy added shelves on the new wall and that's where we store off-season clothes bags, winter boots, etc. Changed so much for us to "lose" that wasted space that just kept getting stuff thrown it.

I had weight loss surgery 22yrs ago. Hit my goal just to regain about the same as you did. My dr explained it’s not uncommon. If needed go back to day 1 if eating soft foods easier to digest and lots of fibres. You should try this 2 to 3 times a week at least. Now that your eating “normal “ your belly is going to expand some what. Your body is loving this cause your chemical make up thought you were starving yourself. Go back to 6 small meals a day in between. And obviously stressing is a high belly bloater. Don’t feel bad EVERYONE I know went through this, especially during covid. Your surgery was a success. You’ll do it. Best of luck OH Ya. KEEP YOUR VITAMINS LEVELS UP TO NORMAL. Especially your iron . Best of luck beautiful lady

You are my inspiration! I spent a couple of days last week working hard on decluttering and organizing my living room. Then, my 14 year old son's friend walked in and said, "am I in the right house? It's so clean!" That from a 13 year old boy! Thank you Cas!!

We use a bedsheet for LEGO. Their LEGO is stored in a bin and when they want to play with it we spread out a bedsheet on the floor and that contains the mess while building. When they are done we take the bedsheet and dump all the LEGO back into the bin. We use the same bedsheet for making forts, etc. I just bought an inexpensive bedsheet as it isn't used for sleeping. It has worked great! No more stepping on little LEGO pieces embedded in the carpet! And cleanup is a snap! I do a similar thing when they use play-doh. I lay a drop cloth on the floor under their little table and all mess is contained. Then I can easily pick up bigger play-doh pieces and shake out the rest.

I started with my bedroom, too. I moved into a full house when I married and brought all my stuff. The bedroom also became my sanctuary. I made it the nicest room in the house. The nicest table and the prettiest lamps, and the dresser i liked the best. Even 19 years later, I always start a declutter and clean session with our bedroom.

5-10 minute per room cleaning bursts are what works for me. If it's been awhile since I've done a thorough cleaning I'll do 15 minutes. I also give my kitchen and bathroom a super quick & dirty wipe down at the end of the day. I'd rather spend 5-10 minutes a day in each room doing a quick clean than set aside 1-2 hours a week to do the whole house. Also, where do you start? In my opinion, start with what you think is going to be the easiest room to declutter. You'll get through it fast and that accomplishment will give you the motivation to do more.

My youngest son is ADHD who is now 40 and has is his own family. Cas, you are right about the labeled bins. I will add you can’t tell an ADHD child to clean his/her room. You have take it in sections. 1. Pick up your books and put them in the shelf. 2. Pick up your legos and put them in the box. Etc, etc. I had more luck in breaking up in sections. Cleaning his room was an overwhelming task so it never got done in that way. His wife is still learning how he needs to be trained.

As an ADHD bee, I get caught up with all the sub-categories and sub-sub- categories. Like you said, it's so time consuming! So I've done exactly what you suggested and am living as a butterfly for now. So everything is in categories and stored that way. My clothes are categorized: ss tops, ls tops, blazers/jackets, dresses, skirts, jeans, etc. My files are categorized. E.g. insurance, investments, medical, home improvement, etc.

I'm a ADD bee. I tried to be a butterfly but it drives me crazy when things are macro organized. How do you do it?

    • @adz5bneweng589
      @adz5bneweng589 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@miriamfish579 I've found when I try to be micro organized, then it just takes way too long and things sit around until I find the time to "do it right" which is rarely, if ever. So I pick my battles. With my clothes, tools and jewelry I get a little micro with categories and colors or types.
With my paper files, papers sit around "until I have time". Instead, I have broader categories (like cars or insurance) and it doesn't bother me because I rarely need them.
For me just knowing where something is has made such a huge difference that, for instance, having all the winter hats, scarves and gloves in the same container is just so much better that not being able to find them when I need them.

💖 Thank you SO, SO much for doing this live, Cas!! I can really relate to some of the things you talked about. 🤦‍♀️ For instance, Saturday perfectionism cleaning...it really IS the death of house cleaning! I loved some of your other tips, too. I have been watching you, Dana, and Dawn for over a year. I have made significant progress using the methods and questions you have all imparted. I can't wait for the finish line of declutter. Yes, I know, it is never truly finished, it is always an onion. lol However, if you only KNEW what it was before I started this round getting the outer layer of that onion off... I started my decluttering in the place that GOT IN MY WAY EVERY DAY. Stacks of bills and miscellaneous papers. They were an eyesore and frequently slid and fell. Plus, I couldn’t find anything if I needed it.
On a related note: Sunday can come along once every few months as far as my “Sunday Morning” basket is concerned. Even if you don’t tackle it on a regular basis, you can find a paper within via a quick search. The separated stacks of papers that morphed together are no more. 😃

Thanks for your channel. Even though I'm pretty good at decluttering , I have been watching your videos and a couple of other gals(Minimal Mom) for more than a year and you have been very motivating. During this question and answer session , I just decluttered 2 big difficult drawers! I agree with you- the most important room is the bedroom. Except for extra sheets and towels for guests or some gifts I am hiding, almost everything else there is in everyday use. Vanity and bed side tables free of clutter-just bare essentials.

I was a hot mess 6 years . Your videos helped me so much . You are easy and realistic and soooo relatable .
. I found to clean daily but definitely weekly and this will make you put things away
I had a bench in my room that was my laundry mountain . I got rid of it and have a small laundry basket that I wash as soon as it’s full ( about every 7 days )
Mail , I go through it and get rid of junk . I put things I have to deal with on my work desk so during the day or after I am done working ( I am still in work mode) I can take care of it as a weeks worth Is stressful to me . I also try to have most bills online
Small 5 min cleaning Burts are great . So every time I go to the bathroom I clean one thing like the toilet or sink .
Shopping or online packages must be put away right away or you don’t deserve or need it

Why do you buy so many things that need to be returned? That may happen once every three years here. Also putting things away the first time stops you from picking them up two, three, or four times. My Mom told me growing up "Don't go to bed with a messy house". She meant put the dishes all in the sink and fold the throw on the couch. Straighten the pillows on the couch. Kind of your 5 minute cleans before bed. You get up and the house is neat. This is way less stressful in the end.

So... I bought the cricut maker. As a result, I have $500 spice jar labels. Despite having that and a regular label maker, I've been using masking or painting tape recently. It's super easy and I tell myself that I can always come back later, but it's fine for now. The good thing is that it is very low commitment- if I labeled something coco puffs and wanted to use it for fruit loops next, it would be very easy to just remove and make a new "label." Label maker/cricut labels are a lot more expensive and it feels much worse to get rid of them.

Around 15:15 I LOVE your suggestion for bees w adhd to organize like butterflies at the start, and then refine / narrow it down as you go. It's like what I've been doing with my rainbow 10 drawer cart!
Also ty for reminding me of the existence of chocolate hummus

John Tesh on the radio mentioned that a study was done about dressing as a super hero gets more work done more productive and esp so if kids do it. Made think of you you are onto something by dressing up to clean lol 😀

Hi, I’m new to your channel and I thank you so much for all your videos. I’m watching this just now and just heard you say you had weight loss surgery. I’m not sure which one you had, I too had WLS back in 2006. Mine was the full roux-en-Y and I didn’t keep up with my aftercare once I was more than a year out and I fully regret not doing that. I’m now 41.5 years old and my teeth are crumbling out of my mouth and I just broke my ankle in three places from a simple fall. Please keep up on your iron, vitamin b (all of them), D3, and calcium. I let my iron get really, deathly low and would eat ice like it was popcorn from the time I woke up to the time I went to bed. There’s another TH-cam’r on here named Dr. Berg who has really nourishing vitamins and nutrients from natural sources. Our bodies don’t absorb the synthetic stuff that is on the shelves after WLS. Love you and just care for yourself as much as possible! 💜✝️🙏🏻

As a teen, I was tired always during the school year, my room was a disaster! Sleeping in on Saturday, Saturday evening( nothing to do) I would put everything on the bed. Then each item I picked up, I dealt with it, until everything was gone! Maybe an hour, or a little more at times. Then I dusted and swept. I would even make the bed. Usually I stayed up late watching movies! If I was real lucky, I had a couple of bucks for a bag of chips for the night! Those were the days!

Some of us don’t have laundry in our homes. It builds up til we have a load for the commercial laundry. Laundry every day would be a luxury. Haha

I agree. I remember the days I had to go to the laundromat every Sunday. I hated it. Just the other day I found myself complaining while loading my dryer at home. I immediately reminded myself how lucky I am now to have a washer and dryer in a half- bath in my rental townhouse apartment, and felt gratitude wash over me. That feeling has stayed with me for days.

As I was listening about dooms day boxes I’m staring at 5 of them. Big puppies. I got the collapsible bags that look like logs…‘ so it looks intentional 😂- I’ve got to empty them …❤️

? We’ve moved 2 months ago and have so many boxes. Hubby has put at least a dozen shelves up & organizing them is coming along. What time line would you suggest to revisit any that I’m not sure what to do with?
You talk about shoes in this video and oh my I have 2 hide boxes of shoes. I believe I’m going to do as you suggested.

? Hi Cas! Big Fan of your organizing tips!
I have a question, I have a group family Daycare in my home and don’t know what to do when the “work” hours are over and I switch hats to being a mom and wife with the mess that’s left from providing childcare. How do I organize the toys and such that my own children play with from the ones the daycare children play with being that the main play area for the children is my living room? Help! 😅
