For me it all came down to the battery. Even though the battery tested ok at the shop when I checked it at home starting the bike it dropped significantly causing harsh start up. Since I replaced it I’ve had no problems since. I would start there.

I have a GL 1800. love it...I also have a Moto Guzzi Norge.. my 4th guzzi since 1979...two things I like about the guzzi. I can turn the ABS brakes off so I will have normal brakes if I happen to be on a grassy wet slope or a downhill gravel road or driveway or if I happen to get caught in the snow. ( happened twice in the 80s) on the guzzi, I can turn the ABS off, and I will actually have brakes. I experienced ABS brakes that could not be turned off on my BMW K 1200 LT. Luckily there was a cyclone wire fence that I ran into with my front wheel to stop me, because both the foot pedal , and the handbrake did nothing when the abs took over on a downhill gravel road..I had no breaking action at all. I was actually dragging my feet to help slow me down when I realized the brakes weren’t going to save me.
The other thing my guzzi norge has- on board self diagnostics. If there is a fault code, the code will display on the dashboard. Something like, temperature sensor, oxygen sensor, mass airflow sensor, ECT. It won’t just say check engine, it will actually display the faulty or questionable part code without having to marry the dealer or plug it into a code scanner.
by the way, that is only the main reason I sold my BMW K 1200 LT. There were many many many other reasons, and I will never own another BMW .. I should have test drove the Honda Gold wing before buying that BMW. But all’s well that ends well. i sold the bmw..There’s one thing I can say when selling a BMW motorcycle..There’s an ass for every seat..

Hey Pete, just a thought. I use premium gas in my 17 Indian Springfield. If I put cheap gas in it Racetrack even premium it throws an engine code. No cheap gas no code. Ride safe.

👍 Thanks, this sounds great! I might give this a shot or try a gas additive after some more research.

Glad I found this. Suspected battery going bad yesterday morning had a hard start took two times to get it started decided it was time for a new battery brought it home put a new battery in it everything was fine started this morning took it to work on the way to work engine light come on started freaking out got out of work started just fine. Engine light still on. I was reading some of the comments at lunchtime today and thought well maybe I just need to turn it off and back on a few times so I turned it off and turned it back on after I got home from work lo and behold the engine light went off. Thinking it was the hard start with bad battery. Or changing the battery that made light come on.

Glad it helped. Mine did hard starts as well. Once I put a new battery in no problem since.

I was able to resolve my engine light problem by placing the GW on the center stand and taking the fuel cap off and putting it back on. Then I restarted the Goldwing and the engine light went off!

That’s great. Mine was definitely battery related. I’ve had the light due to the gas cap as well. Ride safe.

All kidding aside, great video! I'm enjoying my Goldwing DCT. I have to start it every couple off days or plug the tender in.

Mine ended up being the battery. Even though I took it to get tested at the parts store and they said it was fine. I had a amp reader hooked up to the bike while starting and it was bad. Since I put the a new one in have not had the issue again.

Could you tell me what could my my problem could be . I have a 2020 dct my engine light is on but we're the mode indicator is were it suppose to tell me tour, rain, econ, sport, it shows 00000 just a bunch of zeros. And it doesn't past 1st gear if I turn it on.

    • @Petesmotoadventure
      @Petesmotoadventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Have you reset the DCT? Fred Harmon has a video on how to do that. Try that first. I would also check your battery that is what caused mine to come on and start hard.

This happened to me today. 12K on bike, Was at the store, temp was 45F and bike was running well. Went to restart the bike to finish the ride and the started hiccuped 3 times and died. Shut ignition off and turned back on, engine started hard. The the check engine light flashed several times and stayed on. Rode for about 40 min more, stopped for coffee, went and restarted bike, light still on, but everything was acting normal. Got home after 30 min and shut it off. Restarted in the garage and light blinked and went off. Was hoping to see what the issue is. Battery is fine, no accesories other than fog lights direct from battery. Did lots of reading but nothing concrete. Hope it stays resolved.

Mine did it several times even though I took the battery to get tested. Once I used my battery tender volt reader and started it the voltage came up with low start. Replaced the battery with off the shelf battery from Advanced and have not had the problem since.

Hey Pete, this is FASTEDDIE, just had this problem with the engine light coming on, and scary hard starting. I put the charger on, came back 60 minutes later, said I was fully charged. It did start up, but my 2018 had original. Same morning , same problem with my reverse. I noticed if I turned the reverse off and tried it again , it worked perfectly. So. I'm going to install a new battery Tomorrow. Will keep you informed. TY. Ride Safe Ride Fast

As you may know the alternator is the starter and your forward and reverse walk so with low battery or some power supply problem reverse would not properly engage. I’ll look for your video with additional info. Have the 2020 DCT Tour now. My third wing. No problems as yet.

Well..... I believe it boils down to the battery, it seems that when I get fuel do a short ride the bike sputters to turn over. Turn it off and back on and fires right up. Happened again today. I’m going to get a new battery today or tomorrow. My voltage meter says the battery is fine but I think it has a dead cell.

My 2018 DCT check engine came on light after trying to start on a low battery a couple times. Followed jump drain instruction & it worked like a charm. 5 year old battery holds 12.6 but doesn’t seem to have the starting power it should. (Not spinning like it used to) Going to pick up a fresh battery tommorow👍🏼

I would love to know. Unfortunately there is no ODI reader for the bike. I’m continuing to research how I can get the code. My local dealer will never see one of my bikes ever again, unless.

The previous generation of Wings were known to do weird things when their battery was going south.
You could get the codes by putting the bike in neutral and the side stand down. May work on new models.

Mine just went on, I think it was due to a low battery as it has been getting cool at nigh and I had not had the bike out, took three tries to start it, seems okay now and check light went out

That’s what it seemed to be. I had the battery tested and it was fine. There was some corrosion built up on the terminals. Cleaned it all up no problems since. Did a 1500 mile trip a couple weeks ago and no problems.
