Do they prefer the pond in shade or sun? Maybe a combo?

Good question! Best practice is morning sun and afternoon shade. The flowers I used in my design were all part shade flowers. Another thing to consider is full sun may over warm the water and also encourage algae.

@@LZH13067 I had an upturned pot I put a few bricks under to make compartments. There were 3 frogs inside, every time I checked, with a few more in the area. I had set this frog zone up only a few weeks before. They got sun only in the morning. My neighbor cut down his shade tree, exposing this area to sun all day. All the frogs left. I must find a new spot for them.

I live in southeast AZ and it’s been too hot & dry here for even people😢 but I found a tiny frog in my bag of potting soil. Is there a different kind of frog habitat I need since he’s a desert guy? I soaked the soil for him and scooped him into a shallow dish with rocks and added a bit more water & some wood sticks for now. I set him in the shade, too. Hoping to help him stay here!

Frances - good question. I'm not familiar with SE AZ but when I looked up frogs in Arizona I was surprised at the diversity. I think what you did sounds perfect. My plan with a larger amount of water would probably quickly evaporate. He will probably move around to find food but you have given him a nice daytime shelter! Thanks for caring about wildlife!
