A hot and neutral reverse is also possible even with the black and white wires on the correct terminals if reversed somewhere upstream, whether it be at another receptacle, a junction box, or even at the panel. The problem is, most if not all your devices will work normally and give no indication of a problem. But for safety reasons, this should be corrected immediately. Classic example is a table lamp with an Edison base socket, it's easier to touch the threads when changing a bulb. When wired properly, the threads are neutral, and the switch breaks the hot connection at the bottom of the socket. Reversed and the treads remain hot posing a risk of shock even when the lamp is turned off. Sometimes really old lamps will have a non polarized plug (two narrow blades the same width) allowing the plug to be inserted either way. Such plugs are outdated and unsafe, and should be replaced with a polarized cord and plug.
Question, My tester shows hot and neutral reversed, but they are not neutral(white) is on the left side, and hot(Black) is on the right.( Looking from the front ) Also I check with a volt meter and the hot ( Black) wire has 121 volts AC. Tester shows red and center green on???

My outlets say hot neutral switched. So I switched them and tested,,,,,it still says switched. By the way, I tried 2 different testers.
Helped me figure out my problem. Had the side with the two white wires swapped and that did it.
Thank you!
