The "several wars of self defense" line is pretty amusing to anyone who knows about Roman history. More or less every war Rome ever fought was in "Self Defense". They would purposefully twist the rhetoric and reasoning and then go through a very ceremonial process of declaring war on an enemy state, which involved a verbal and written declaration, as well as throwing a spear into their lands. The game seems to start you out in the Greek territories, which Rome annexed 'unofficially' for it's 'own protection and stability'.
@@uncletiggermclaren7592 The ancient greeks kinda found themselves in an amazing situation where the country that conquered them, through both force of arms and diplomacy, was extremely enthralled with their culture
Yeah and they were mostly right to do so too, but still less hypocritical and sanctimonious about it than any modern regime. We use the Roman self defense excuse too but also invent absurd lies like “democracy” “freedumb” “socialism” “human rights” “genocide” and “war crimes” to justify waging the most brutal wars at home and abroad(not unlike the ancient Athenians, tbh).
After Conquistador and Vikings - I'm just getting it blindly on a wishlist. They really nail the idea in their previous games, not only combat but that RPG-strategy feel - iterating with each game to make it better. Conquistador was an unpolished gem made on the budget of two potatoes, Vikings was serious game studio time.. I have high hopes for Rome
I feel the exact same way about portraits in RPGs. Dont give me a portrait option if my character model cant conceivably look like it. Its annoying as all heck not being able to match those things up. Haha
The evolution from one game to another is really impressive. You can feel the vision always present being refined more and more. Not only does the combat and character evolution look solid, but it's also tightly woven into the story line.
I remember Expeditions Conquistador which came out like 10 years ago, really enjoyed it although I never got the Vikings one. Looking forward to this one.
In words of Maximus Iceus Cubus: "Here's a murder rap to keep y'all dancin' With a crime record like Charles Manson A Roman Pilum is the tool, Don't make me act like that Oedipus fool"
I'm so glad to see how far Logic Artists has come, I've played both Conquistador and Vikings and this game is already showing to be much more technically impressive than it's predecessors
I really hope they included slings. While I know the protagonist's backstory is established and thus you can't actually be a Balearic slinger, slingers were well established in ancient Rome and it's a weapon I quite appreciate. They were in Viking; it'd be odd not to include the option here. Also, it's a shame more games don't allow the sling and shield combo. If someone were to include it anywhere, I'd say Rome's a prime choice given that the slingers on Trajan's Column are depicted wielding shields. Thank you for bringing this game to my attention. Need to get my computer back up to 100% so I can give it a go.
I didn't connect it until you said "Third game" but holy Hell another Expeditions game! Fantastic! That's one thing I'll say about Rome. It was brutal and harsh, but the middle ranks (less so the generals) were expected to actually fight with their men.
The triarcus did not fight your opponents, and focused on slaying wounded pirates. Which may have been done to stop them from talking post battle. Couple that to the fact that he was anxious even before the attack and first refused to give a straight answer to when you'd be arriving. I'd say those are telltale signs of him working with the pirates.
Well said about gameplay vs exposition. Indie games seem to be the most guilty at throwing a lot of text before gameplay. Sometimes it is better just to experience the game and discover the game world while playing. Good vid bro!
I hugely appreciate the effort they put in with voice acting in this game... Would have wish-listed just for that alone, but the rest seems extremely well polished as well.
That looks like a really nice game. I'll be downloading the demo for sure to try it myself Also, as a fun fact: the intro is really anachronistic. In the times of Rome they did not have a color called blue. They used to describe the sea as "wine colored".
Nice, i watched your original video from Expedition Vikings some time ago and i really liked that game, i hope the party management and camping is better on this one.
OK this looks great, bought both the expeditions games based on splat videos but haven't finished either... not because they aren't great games but because I get decision paralysis in all branching story path type games but also don't like using walk-throughs... That said I love the Roman setting.
Looks really nice - I look forward for the Steam release. Just minor squirks - it is not historically accurate at some places ... by the time of the 1st BC triarii, princeps, etc. did not exist any more. They were part of the manipular legion setting - early and middle republic era. By the 1st BC the legions followed the cohort system, invented around and after the 2nd Punic Wars = the gear of a legionaire was unified - large rectangular shield, metal armour, pilum (throwing spear), gladius, pugio ... but all in all really nice ... I have always loved the era ...
Yeah true, but they probably work better as archetypes/character class templates considering how uniform the roles of legionnaires became as result of those reforms.
I love how historical these games are. These people don’t judge themselves by modern standards, but by standards of the time. Vikings raid people and don’t have a problem with this. Romans conquered things, and they didn’t feel like they needed to feel guilty about it.
It's funny you mentioned the Robin Hood weaponry when talking about the staff. On the Modern Rogue channel they checked out quarterstaff combat, got a demonstration on why you don't laugh at the stick. It's great. 8D (And they mention that at least in Historical European martial arts you don't really hold the stick Robin Hood style like Syneros is.)
Splattercat love your content hope you're doing well stay safe and well I guess I'd say stay warm but you live in California it's cold as hell here in Iowa
Looks pretty good so far. I will definitely look up the demo. I was confused about how the scene at the beginning relates to the main character and had to go back and re-watch it (the eldest child is the woman, the youngest child is the one who was sent away - presumably the main character).
I love anything Roman in nature...I loved playing Ryse:Son of Rome, I loved watching Spartacus back in the day...and most recently I am watching Barbarians on Netflix...which has been alot of fun too to see those on the other side of the Roman empire. ALso these devs are pretty good I played Consquistador years ago and it was pretty solid if not more simple.
I studied Classics and Linguistics, like 30 years ago, but the pronunciation is pretty good. I believe their is a channel with Metatron that studies stuff like that. nice to seed such attention to detail as you mentioned. just my duo asses
We really did our best to get the Classical Latin pronunciation right :D not all the actors had an equally easy time of it but we got there for the main cast at least.
I liked your let's play of conquistador. The game has been on my radar since then. I bought Vikings but it was a letdown so I kept away from the first game. I see there's a demo (24 Giga wow) so i'll at least be able to judge it in advance. An advice to people who are tempted to buy games from this company : wait a while after the game is released, there are usually many bugs which are fixed only after at least one month after release (if ever). And watch more than a one video test from youtubers to make an opinion and even if you can try to watch more than one youtuber/streamer.

What year is this supposed to be? Your ship has phalanx style roundshields but you're carrying oval scuta, the first enemies are wearing linothorax, the pirate ship has a giant Persian Wars era helmet on the sail...
