A friend of mine went through basic and heard the same story about something in the food that kept your sex drive down. Rumours spread that it was in the potatoes. One night one of the guys in his group got hard and loudly exclaimed out of the washroom "Your damn potatoes can't keep me down!"

There wasn't anything added to the food in Basic Training. When you are assigned to a barracks containing 50 other dudes. 8 weeks of Infantry school and not a single female in sight, there isn't anything to give you a boner.

Me, i had no desire for anything til graduation and i saw my (at the time) fiancee for the first time in months... That was a little embarrassing... Fun Fact: The reason gunny makes such a good drill sergeant is because he was one. In fact that is how he got the part in full metal jacket. He was on set as an adviser. And while demonstrating it for everyone (to show the actor that had the part how to do it) the director saw how he looked on camera (he had been watching him do it in person but after the third or fourth time had a look at it through the camera and was like "this is what I have been looking for") and gave him the part and thus his acting career was born.
