Just wanted to mention the obvious...your playing and songwriting skills are AMAZING!!! You write songs that in my opinion have nothing to be jealous of from many heavy metal bands these days. Much respect. As for the video, guess a combination of both is always the best. Cheers from Greece
I think both serve important purposes, and neither is inherently better than the other, it just depends on what the song writer is trying to convey. A more somber or dark song tends to get a lot more out of slower riffs, where as something faster would do better in a song meant to express anger or joy, or just for getting you hyped up. Also really great when they get used together in a song, especially like a build-up and breakdown or an intro groove into a fast riff for verse/chorus sections. The fact there are entire genres based around one tempo or the other is pretty amazing too - Doom and Drone Metal for slower stuff, and Thrash and Tech Death for faster stuff.
I always really liked it when bands in their songs go from fast verses to half time chorus's and then they slow it down for the breakdowns like Of Mice and Men's Second & Sebring
Fast is frantic, energetic, and relentless. But I prefer the groovy, heavy, and impactful tunes of slow metal. Though the best in my mind is actually fast rhythm with slow lead - the best of both worlds!
I enjoy slow metal more so than fast metal. Not to say I don't like some fast metal songs, but I get into more songs that use slow metal types of tempo.
Slower and midtempo is usually heavier to me. I was always drawn to 90's output and later so the 80's heavy and thrash just seemed too soft to me. Newer outputs draw from all decades for sure. But as E standard went "away" and more strings came about - the riffs got heavier and i dig that a lot more. Djenty sounds are not my thing, as the twangy riffs sound less heavy to me - and downtuned 6 strings are ususally more than enough.
On it's own, I prefer the slow one, but the juxtaposition of the two makes for a good song as a whole and I think would be a winning formula for a band in general. Like, if guitarists in bands were split between a regular--lets call it a tenor--guitar and a baritone guitar or an extended range guitar. That way you have a clear delineation in the strings from tenor to baritone to bass.
In rhythm like a mix of the two, both have their place & love all sorts of riffs. I'm not a fan of crazy fast shready solos just for the sake of it though, I prefer a slower solo lick with lots of feels.
I can't stand fast stuff ngl unless it's goregrind, deathgrind or pornogrind or something grind based but for slow and heavy, it's brutal death metal, slam death or deathcore or djentcore. Or even keep it simple with the legends of making 7 String mainstream and that's KoRn and Nü Metal
I did an experiment: I looked away from the screen and just enjoyed it in my ears. It sounds just great altogether, doesn't fall into separate pieces. I like Children of Bodom, Dawn of Dreams, A Perfect Circle, Nirvana and even sometimes jazz, if you're curious.
1: Slow (Fan of both, DragonForce & Korn, but these days I'm leaning towards Korn.) 2: Fast (Very solid thrashy riff, the accents of the slow one didn't hit the right places for me.) 3: Slow (Always a happy boy with these nu metal-ish riffs, fast one reminded me a bit of Dillinger, which I wasn't really a fan of.)
It's hard for me to compare when you swap to a lower tuning for the slower metal. Would be interesting to compare both slow vs. fast on standard and lower tuning. But for this video definitely like the slower metal
I prefer fast over very slow, but my true love is midtempo. Think of songs like "Where Dead Angels lie" or "Black Dragon" by Dissection or "Silver into Steel" by Grand Magus. I think playing riffs too fast tends to diminish there impact.
I really prefer both, because they serve different purposes. Without them and everything in between, I couldn't find a soundtrack to whatever mood I'm in at any given time.
Can you do a shoot out between your PRS 7 string vs your Schecter MS 7? I want to buy a 7 string, but stores don't carry them near me. I've always been a PRS guy, have 3. It's tough to make a choice when you can't hear them side by side.
I sold the Schecter however, they’re both really good guitars. The PRS has Seymour Duncan pickups so it sounds awesome however, it’s kinda chunky to play as the neck is thicker than most 7 strings. The Schecter was also pretty good but I didn’t like the Multiscale that much. Thanks for watching! :)
To me your fast and slow riffs didn’t sound particularly faster or slower than each other, at least not enough to be VS each other. They could have been in the same metalcore song, with some tasty alternating thrash and groove flavor. It would have been cool to see you accelerate up to true speed metal and deccelerate down to doom metal, but I know that both of those are an acquired taste even amongst fellow metalheads.
I think he went for the standard norm of slow vs fast, rather than picking the extremes. Probably a good choice for a wider audience. Though I wouldn't have been opposed to at least one example of those like you mentioned.
By this video, I can tell what makes a riff sound fast or slow are actually the drums. Fast drumming for the slow riffs would make them sound fast, and the opposite works as well.
I like both but I'm going with slower metal. I like metal that makes you bob your head. I also think slower is heavier. If you took some fast riffs from death metal and slowed them down? They sound way heavier.
My physiotherapist gave me 2 types of exercise. For the short neck muscles fast metal for intense fast headbanging. For the long neck muscles slow metal, for the long and deep stretches of the neck😂
Personally you can get a lot out of slower riffs, but i also think the 1st and 2nd fast riffs were actually pretty decent, maybe with less snare accents it would have hit harder
Fast Metal or Slow Metal, which is best? :)
I hit up your agent about being on our podcast but I never got a response
Slow.
Fast metal with slow breakdowns.
Fast + slow = must have \m/^^
This kind of mix together! 😉
Combining both is awesome, giving some dynamic 🤘
100% Agree! :)
ya having a fast riff go into a slow riff is so damn orgasmic
so check out Lamb of God
@@sutach lamb of god fucking rules
Black sabbath bring us that from the begining. Long luve iommi geezer bill ward and ozzy
That sweet movement when a song includes both! Slow to build the groove and energy, fast to let loose. Great vid Pete!
I've always loved slow metal. So brutal to head bang to and I really get to enjoy each note and chord.
Just wanted to mention the obvious...your playing and songwriting skills are AMAZING!!! You write songs that in my opinion have nothing to be jealous of from many heavy metal bands these days. Much respect. As for the video, guess a combination of both is always the best. Cheers from Greece
It's slow for me... But can we appreciate the transition at 1:49 for a second? I really enjoyed the Meshuggah-like part but that transition was gold!
From Meshuggah to Death in a smooth transition.
Slow riffs have groove, easy choice
Slow riffs definitely have that 'Tune low, Chug slow' vibe :)
But fast riffs make me wanna kill dragons (especially that first riff)
@@Rain593 dude leave the dragons be
Haven't heard of monuments.... Right?
@@pabloleautaud9443 I actually have bought their recent album so I agree!
does not matter as long as the riffs are nice, smooth, and creative
heads will be bobbin' for both!
That first slow riff was super Sepultura sounding. I love it!
In your performance, it's hard to choose either. Both are brilliant.
Thanks! :)

3 minutes only. I could listen to you playing 3 hours... or even longer. You're great!
I always really liked it when bands in their songs go from fast verses to half time chorus's and then they slow it down for the breakdowns like Of Mice and Men's Second & Sebring
It's like choosing a favorite child. Both are unique and both have their place in my heart
Love the fast stuff, it's an adrenaline rush....loved the vid as usual pete 🤘🏼😁😈
Thanks! :
Depends on the mood, fast is great for pumping you up, but the slow is great for aggresion and headbanging! :)
I prefer Sloast Metal, which is exactly what I saw in this video: fast tempo with them occasional half-time parts.
"America is all about speed. Hot, nasty, badass speed" - Eleanor Roosevelt
😂
The 3rd fast riff reminds me of Death - well, now I'm gonna listen to Human!
Combo of both styles are the most captivating. 🎸🤘🔥
Your playing is so epic and rhythmic! Well done
Before this video I didn't know how to tell the difference between fast and slow. Thanks Pete 👍
Fast is frantic, energetic, and relentless. But I prefer the groovy, heavy, and impactful tunes of slow metal. Though the best in my mind is actually fast rhythm with slow lead - the best of both worlds!
I’m more of a fast metal fan. But I do enjoy slow metal. Then when there’s a blend of the two 🔥
I enjoy slow metal more so than fast metal. Not to say I don't like some fast metal songs, but I get into more songs that use slow metal types of tempo.
the transitions are so smooth
i love the slow stuff, to me it just hits the feels harder... especially if its in a minor key
Always both in different ways! Groove, sludge and doom for that slow crave and thrash power etc. For that fast driving kick
Awesome playing Pete! we like them both... and we want MORE! 😈
Excelente toque, amigo, saludos desde Colombia.
amazing riffs as always! you're a riffing machine man, i'd really love to see a breakdown video from you about your riff writing
I'd say that fast metal riffs are appropriate for mosh-pitters while the slow ones are great for headbanging 🤘
Really love the second fast riff
Chuck is really proud of 1:50
Without caption that will be great song! Bring solo to it and will be awesome! Youre an incredible riff writer Pete, incredible :)
Damn you're sooooo good dude!
The fast metal riff 3 sounds like Chuck Schukdiner's playing style
the 3rd fast riff was heavy Death influensed
Yep haha, love that band. Chuck is amazing :)
I like the slow metal grooves the most, but there are times that you just want that fast metal
Trhash vs Nu Metal loved both of them
Slower and midtempo is usually heavier to me. I was always drawn to 90's output and later so the 80's heavy and thrash just seemed too soft to me. Newer outputs draw from all decades for sure. Goodness! ML1-7 Pro is back!
It depends on the riffs, I honestly try to play more chords progression.....or more "melodic" stuff on fast BPM🤯
Great work as always! I got mastodon vibes at the second fast part and I liked it! 🤘
Someone has been listening to Death lately :) Fast Metal Riff 3.
The last riff is just amazing I love it.
On it's own, I prefer the slow one, but the juxtaposition of the two makes for a good song as a whole and I think would be a winning formula for a band in general. I like fast but if you’re going slow I prefer a lower tuning because it’s gonna make sound more aggressive
In rhythm like a mix of the two, both have their place & love all sorts of riffs. I'm not a fan of crazy fast shready solos just for the sake of it though, I prefer a slower solo lick with lots of feels.
I was on board until the 2nd half of that.
Slow ≠ more feeling
Fast ≠ less feeling
I can't stand fast stuff ngl unless it's goregrind, deathgrind or pornogrind or something grind based but for slow and heavy, it's brutal death metal, slam death or deathcore or djentcore. Or even keep it simple with the legends of making 7 String mainstream and that's KoRn and Nü Metal

I like Children of Bodom, Dawn of Dreams, A Perfect Circle, Nirvana and even sometimes jazz, if you're curious.
Both are awesome it just depends on the situation 😀
A nice mix of both is always best :)
I agree
1: Slow (Fan of both, DragonForce & Korn, but these days I'm leaning towards Korn.)
2: Fast (Very solid thrashy riff, the accents of the slow one didn't hit the right places for me.)
3: Slow (Always a happy boy with these nu metal-ish riffs, fast one reminded me a bit of Dillinger, which I wasn't really a fan of.)
Nice! I like both actually...
Ending was dope!
Thanks! :)
The first slow riff reminds me of dream theater. 🤘🏻
Slower = Heavier = Better! 🤘🤘🤘
I luv both! 🙂
I love the groove of Slow and the energy of Thrash !
It's hard for me to compare when you swap to a lower tuning for the slower metal. Would be interesting to compare both slow vs. fast on standard and lower tuning. But for this video definitely like the slower metal
bro you are so good
Pete "The Fast Hand" Cottrell 👍🤘
I love a bit of both. Some Creeping Death alongside Sad But True is killer, for example!
I like Thrash, I like Groove, and I like Doom.
I was less keen on the more nu-metal riff though, if I'm honest
You can't make me choose. This isn't fair. They're both great
I prefer fast over very slow, but my true love is midtempo. Think of songs like "Where Dead Angels lie" or "Black Dragon" by Dissection or "Silver into Steel" by Grand Magus. I think playing riffs too fast tends to diminish there impact.
Slow riffs gotta get my votes. Fast riffs I always end up just sort of listening to but slow riffs I cannot help but get the head bob going lol
100% agree haha :)
Man the slow riffs made me want to headbang way harder than the fast ones 🤘
1:51 that's some Death stuff
Love both but I'm a thrasher at heart. Fast for me!
There are good at mixing them together
I really prefer both, because they serve different purposes. Without them and everything in between, I couldn't find a soundtrack to whatever mood I'm in at any given time.
Personally, best option is both. Slow for your build-up/breakdown. Fast for your in-between. The game is to try to make them tie in together
I need that SPEEEEEED!!!
Slow or slow-ish for me (all about personal preferences innit). Never got into thrash and similar styles. Give me some doomy or sludgy riffs any day.
I love it slow!
Yes to all

Death (Chuck Schuldener) - i think you can his music)) beautiful music)

I've always preferred slow. I just feel it more, I guess.

I like both but I'm going with slower metal. I like metal that makes you bob your head. I also think slower is heavier. If you took some fast riffs from death metal and slowed them down? They sound way heavier.
For the slow riffs, especially slow number 2, what tuning are you in?
Love me some slow, groovy riffs.
Very nice Harley Benton Amarok. Not sure about tuners underneath. How do you find it?
Both can be good, but my favourite genres is doom and stoner so i like slow more
I like both of 'em styles but I would say, I guess, my favourite metal songs do tend to be slower ones.
My preference is slow, but fast can have a good adrenaline rush too
Your Slow Metal really sounds mid-tempo as in Groove Metal. I was expecting more like Doom Metal riffs.
Great playing by the way ;)
All speeds of metal are great in their own right 👍
Sometimes we need a fine balance. So Both \,,/
No disrespect to Harley Benten, but anything played on that Chapman 7 string is automatically badass.
My physiotherapist gave me 2 types of exercise. For the short neck muscles fast metal for intense fast headbanging. For the long neck muscles slow metal, for the long and deep stretches of the neck😂
А мне, как обычно, оба варианта нравятся. Зачем выбирать, если и то и другое круто? ))
Why not combine both?
Slow just makes me want to headbang and slam my head on the table😂. Love both tho!
You should put Doom Metal Riffs in Slow Metal
I'll give it a try next time! :)
This fast metal sounds like Thrash Metal while the slow metal you played sounds more like Groove Metal. Both are good.
Man I love the slow ones
Personally you can get a lot out of slower riffs, but i also think the 1st and 2nd fast riffs were actually pretty decent, maybe with less snare accents it would have hit harder
