      This definitely needs to become a series. As a DM who has run this campaign, I can say you’ve done an excellent job with not spoiling too much. In fact, what you have spoiled should be, in my opinion, common knowledge for any potential player or DM before play even begins. It’s the kind of information that makes choosing what to be/play much less ominous and intimidating in PF2e’s ocean of choices.

    I disagree about the Magus. Here's why. If a mob is immune to magic, then they have martial abilities the same as any front line martial class and if the mob is immune to physical well then they switch to magic. I would say that makes them more diverse.

    Our inventor tanked all the way through book one with a tower shield. And we also had a magus that 1 shot 1/3rd the creatures. Also the gm was increasing the difficulty. Our cleric probably had the lowest damage output and i was a bard XD

      @ElenionAncalima2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, this makes me hesitant to provide this as a guide to my players. When I played with a different group our Magus was a great front liner. I also don't see the 10 minute cooldown for Investigator being a huge issue with how often we took breaks to Refocus and Treat Wounds. A little worried this might just discourage the player who is really excited about Inventor.

    I’d say I’m shocked Paizo doesn’t do a video series like this themselves, but I’d be lying. In my opinion they are the king when it comes to making really amazing content and then failing hard to properly promote that material. Remember Pawns, those cool, affordable upright tokens for use on battle mats? Awesome idea, amazing product, but rarely could you find anything about it outside their website. Finding reviews on this and other platforms for them was near-impossible for many of the campaign-specific ones. They were so worried about spoilers and a few other concerns that potential customers had no idea what they were getting.
    They’ve been churning out APs forever, and seem content to rely on word-of-mouth for most of the material. There’s a major difference between campaign spoilers and making a campaign more accessible to potential players. Part of making things accessible is making people aware of why they’d want to play it. And that includes suggestions on characters and options. I’ve talked to players and DMs who won’t touch an AP because they don’t know where to start. Having a billion character options won’t matter if players feel intimidated over which to pick as opposed to excited. Heck, most players and DMs I’ve talked to aren’t even aware that Players Guides are a thing for each campaign, and free for everyone on the Paizo website.

    So, I've been running a group through Abomination Vaults for some time now, nearly a year, and we're only on book two! A lot of this is because my players have pretty robust backstories and so we've been derailing from the main mission quite a bit, but also these books just give you so much content to play through. It's been an absolute blast, and I cannot recommend this adventure path enough for people looking to get into the system either as a DM or a player. Only caveat is that for new DM's, all the information can be a little overwhelming, but just roll with it. I've gotten quite a few things incorrect in my play through, but we made it work.

    I did play a Magus for the majority of the adventure (reaching the later parts of book 3) before retiring him to bring in a cleric (we didn't have any "in combat" healer or full caster and we lost several characters because of that, including our incredible thaumaturge) but he was actually pretty solid. With Sparkling targe he made for an incredible wall to protect his companions, relying mostly on cantrip spellstrikes and his big spells for support such as Haste, Warding Agression or Resist Energy.
    Now my automaton cleric ("Beep Boop, Hello meatbags, I am W4N-D3R3R") of casandalee is here to be an almost litteral healbot and he's quite fun to roleplay.

    • @Nonat1s
      @Nonat1s ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yeah, the magus isn't a *bad* choice whatsoever. I'll argue that no class is a bad choice at all. I just had to pick something to be the bottom class and I picked magus mainly for the idea that you'll almost never be 100% effective in most fights.

    Thaumaturge's do not circumvent resistances/Immunities as some people think. Damage calculation goes like this:
    Roll damage, apply resistances and immunity, then apply weakness.
    This means while you may trigger an existing weakness or create a new one, your melee damage type is still completely subject to the monster's written stat block

    • @Nercrontyr
      @Nercrontyr 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I believe its immunities, weaknesses, and then resistence per pf2e application rules. So something resistent to bludgeoning still had the weakness 5 to cold iron still will apply the weakness amount prior to resisting the bludgeoning weapon used.

    I’m starting up my first run of Abomination Vaults pretty soon as a recent 5e convert! I’m sending this to my players, so thanks for making it!
    One thing I will critique though, I think you’re short changing Magus a bit. I feel they’re quite well suited to the adventure for exactly the reason you described; only half their kit is countered by any given resistance. A Wizard facing magic-immune critters is truly screwed outside of supporting allies, and a Fighter can’t dollop Produce Flame or Electric Arc onto their weapon when facing physically resistant foes. As you say though, it’s all minor differences in the end!

    • @Nercrontyr
      @Nercrontyr 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed but in the way that the magus will still have something to do and not be completely shut down. I do think though they will still feel real sad when 1/2 their kit doesnt work. Just not as sad as that wizard perhaps that isnt speced into weapons but forced to buff or used them due to the enemies.

    😭 Stop the Investigator hate Nonat, they are so good for adventures like this! They are amazing at identifying weaknesses and learning secrets, and the 10 minute Pursue a Lead time is the same time it takes to Refocus. You wouldn't say a Psychic is bottom 3 because you need to refocus 10 minutes between every combat

    • @Captainpigraven
      @Captainpigraven ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Nonat1s I agree finding more data on this would be good. Typically I let my party rest 10 minutes between encounters, usually much, much longer. I mean, most classes, ancestries, etc. have mechanics built in to allow it. I think it’s pretty clear PF2e is a game that (often) encourages it. As mentioned, the Medicine skill alone seems to infer that ten minute waits should be a thing.
      All that said, I mix things up in my campaigns. There are plenty of situations where it makes sense to not permit ten minutes in between fights. But most of the time I just think it’s silly to send group after group of creatures to attack a party. That just feels so B-horror movie style to me.
      Dungeon Crawls are definitely unique, as it can make total sense not to allow too much time to pass. For every locked/closed off room or passage way that might require ten minutes or more to open (thus resting before facing the room’s inhabitants) it makes plenty of sense for multiple open rooms with some creatures inhabiting different areas, or simply wandering around. Cursed items, haunts, and other dangers also help fill in the gaps, and make exploration a chore itself.
      Still, going back to the OP’s post regarding the Investigator…eh. One of my favorite classes in 2e, but also the class most beholden to the style and preferences of the DM. Entire benefits of the Investigator can get thrown out the window if the DM isn’t up to embracing the character, concept, and play style. In my campaigns, Investigators typically thrive, both in general situations and even when we do dungeon crawls. I’m a believer in “knowledge is power”, and versatility with knowledge in my campaigns is incredible powerful. But other DMs just don’t play that way. I’ve only run Abomination Vaults once, and there was no Investigator in the group. But I can see how it would be somewhat useless or nearly overpowered, depending on the DM’s style and preferences. So the same elements that can make it so fun to play or have in a party if you’re the DM is exactly the same thing that can make the experience terrible elsewhere.
      Frankly, a breakdown of this would be another great video idea. A look into the Investigator, and why it’s beloved or hated by so many. Different approaches to the class as a player and DM, etc. Stylistic (regarding play styles) class breakdowns would make for a pretty good series, in my opinion. But the Investigator can be such a binary option for many groups that it probably deserves the first video.
      Additionally, I’m always curious how other groups and DMs treat knowledge in their games. It was only somewhat recently that I discovered that gathering information with the Diplomacy or similar skill was often compressed into campaign-specific streams by many DMs. In other words, a Bard that spends a night in the tavern drinking, entertaining, and talking with everyone might come back with helpful knowledge (based on rolls) for the DM’s intended campaign or “nothing helpful” at all. Whereas in my campaigns, the gathering of information in towns or cities can lead to all sorts of random side quests that have nothing to do with the main objective of the campaign but still can provide money, services, items, or whatever else for a group embracing and accomplishing certain tasks. Similar to the town notice boards in video games like the Witcher and Dragon Age. My mind was blown, as I was brought up learning and utilizing information in my way, and it never occurred to me some DMs might streamline what characters learn to keep the party on track and constantly moving forward.
      Anyways, my apologies for wandering a bit from topic to topic. I’m pretty loopy right now.

      @@Nonat1s As far as I've seen it's pretty standard to take a breather after any combat, and AFAIK the system is designed that way. You'd make things A Lot harder unnecessarily for a party if you didn't allow it as a GM.

    A friend of mine (who's somewhat experienced) is planning to run this as the first PF2e game for me and a few friends. After seeing this video and listening to Tattered Sails Shanty from Total War Warhammer (probably a few too many times but damn is it good), I'm currently planning on playing a Dhampir Gunslinger.

    I had a fun time in that adventure, and man our party put very little forethought into optimizing for what we might encounter lmao - though it wasn't that big of a problem for us because we were running dualclass characters which are just inherently more wellrounded. But I can safely say NoNat is 100% right on that point, if you outthere are running no variant rules there are some concepts you should probably avoid at all costs. Let's just say we had a poisoner alchemist/swashbuckler and in a lot of the combat encounters they paid dearly for that (objectively cool) choice of class, like it was hilarious at times but also pretty rough how often that very witcher-esque character found themselves outmatched by the denizens of gauntlight. I played a magus/tyrant and I also agree with the ressource problem NoNat mentioned but I would add that you should also probably avoid evil aligned characters for this adventure, specifically evil clerics or champions I mean. I'm sure most groups already stick to good or neutral for APs but this is one of those adventures where the kinds of enemies you'll meet make it more fun to be on the heroic side of things, both mechanically and from a story perspective there is a bit more to engage with I think.
    To any one heading into that campagin, best of luck and have a great time!

    I awalys feel weird when somebody I'm subscribed to asks for subscriptions. I keep thinking "I can't subscribe again! I'm letting Nonat down! And he's so nice, especially for a vampire!"

    You can look up several helpful guides for stuff to add to Abomination Vaults on Pathfinder Infinite, for free or very cheap, if this inspired you to run it or you’re considering sending this to your players.

    love the video! it's different from what you've done before but I really liked it, even down to the huge microphone. Only thing i'd change is the "mario kart-esque" music and other video game music, it kinda takes me out of it and is a bit too loud. but I'm a cranky old man!
