I work as a personal tutor and I think Toast was like 10/10 tutor here.
- He didn't reveal the answer immediately.
- He identified her misunderstanding.
- He made her ask relevant questions regarding that
misunderstanding.
- He was super reassuring and never behaved in a way to make her feel stupid
- He was able to recognize that her anxiety was at the point that trying to make her discover it herself (even if she would eventually get it) would be detrimental as her confidence would be significantly lowered. But still only revealed what was necessary for her to figure it out herself (when he revealed you can just add ones).
This last point is a super hard one to do. Because as a tutor you want your student to discover the answer themself and only pave the road for discovery. But yeah sometimes that road can be very stressing for the student and in the big picture just lower their confidence, so recognizing such a scenario is super hard.
Fellow tutor here, and I honestly came here to comment the same thing. Toast did a great job of reassuring her and pushing her to look at the question differently. Even when he stepped in to show her what was wrong, he still didn’t just tell her the answer. But he also never hid the ball from her.
And by the end, Syd was indeed a math queen.

one thing i absolutely love about this video is that thanks to the placement of the cam, everytime my video loads the loading circle appears on top of toast's head, and since my internet sucks today every few seconds it loads.
So it happens so often that syd would say something dumb as hell and then the video loads, making it look like toast is processing the information, just for the video to resume a few seconds later with toast losing his mind.

for the first part yes, but the second part she struggles to add up the digits to 25
@@nefariou5 she failed to understand the prompt the first time and then fell apart mentally because she was failing in front of thousands of people (on what is a relatively simple task)
No hate to Sydney because everyone has brain fart moments and then they get stuck on this one incorrect interpretation and don't see anything else. I'm as guilty of that. But holy shit, Toast has a patience of a saint here. I'd be like "no, digits are one character long symbols, so a 14 is not a digit, 1 and 4 are" after a third attempt. But he guided her there without showing any signs of impatience or making her feel stupid and I respect the heck out of it.

Tbh I get it tho. I had major math anxiety (I blame timed math speed runs in elementary school) and anytime even a simple equation would come up in convo I would always quickly say that I’m not about to do that math and make the other person do the calculations. Then after having an alarm that forced me to do math problems before shutting off, I have found myself having an easier time doing random math whenever it pops up now. Lol so knowing that struggle and having to figure out the math and overall complicated mess this game is in front of however many watching strangers and TOAST?? 💀💀💀
Math anxiety is not a thing bruh. I don't understand how you don't get that practicing math is somehow more effective than what you were doing before which is give up immediately and ask the other person to do it for you.

Anxieties aren't always rational dawg. The fact that they give up before even trying to do the calculation (likely because they are anxious about getting it wrong or looking dumb) is what math anxiety is. The anxiety is also the thing that stops them from practicing. It creates a vicious cycle. Your solution is logical, but you forget that humans have a limbic system, and it can create fear and emotional responses, which can shut off our ability to act based on logic.
@@elijahbuscho7715Anxiety with math only exists due to a lack of practice and guidance. One needs to persevere if progress is to be made.
@@faznaz7455 exactly, and the first step to that is acknowledging that anxiety is real. That even though it's irrational, the feeling of fear is real, and that it's ok and normal to feel that way. Once we acknowledge that, we can provide them with the actual support necessary to overcome the fear. If instead we just say "math anxiety isn't real," or "it shouldn't exist," we exacerbate the shame people feel about it, and when there's a lot of shame, the anxiety becomes bigger and harder to face, which makes it harder to practice math and get better
@@elijahbuscho7715 maybe its a good thing people feel shame about being okay with staying uneducated. "i cant do math because it hurts my feefees" is a laughable response to lack of tenacity. Unlike other anxieties, this one is born from shame of failing and not having the mental fortitude to try again.

I used to help with an after school math study class and this reminds me a lot of my students. It was never that they were too dumb to do math, it was always a lack of confidence and/or someone close to them insisting that math is really hard... I rarely needed to teach math, I mostly coached and tried to build confidence 📣

You can be good at math if you're just willing to try, again and again. Just like most other stuff in life.
Are there people out there that are just better at math naturally than others by a significant margin? Obviously. But having trouble to do such low level math is a result of yourself not even trying because you convinced yourself you were bad at math.
