I live in the Heights now and its actually pretty nice these days. In the 90's there were dudes on the corner everywhere. I think the 20 weed shops in town helped to chill everyone out. I stayed out in Kalamazoo a cpl years ago, and THAT place was bad. Muskegon really dont have homeless ppl either.

I grew up in the Heights in the late 80s. I got hit by an AT&T truck crossing Broadway right @ 12:26 on my way to Ken n Beas. Back then Ken and Bea worked there. I was 8 to 12 years old and could play my mom's numbers and get her cigarettes with a note. It looks nicer when you drive through. You must of rolled through on community clean up day.. lol. You should of went down by Mona Lake by the courts.. Good video 👍🏻

Now we're into old stomping grounds! I was down on 6th. From the 70s to the 90s. Thanks for the vid!

I grew up in the Heights in the 60's and it was not a safe area even back then. The only saving grace to the area was and probably still is is the lake. As soon as I was legally able to I left that cursed town and have not been back. Looking at these videos just confirms what I felt back then, that it was a dying area and would never be safe to live in.

Thanks, Brother! MH is my hometown, but I haven't been back since about '75. Lived on Temple Street. Roosevelt High School was across the street: turned into projects. Appreciate seeing the area, though it isn't pretty anymore.

You're too cool lol..I gotta visit up there. How is the surrounding cities of Muskegon? Like the working class type neighborhoods

The surrounding cities are very nice I must admit but we also have some nice comfortable areas within the Muskegon area as well. Of course you got your rough areas no matter where you go some just rougher than others. But over all you will be very pleased with any choice.

Surrounding areas are really nice. Nice beaches and no crime

@Cam-lg2vy I delivered pizza in college on Sherman for a few years and frequently went to Muskegon Heights. The roads are the worst part during the day if you mind your business

I grew up in the Heights in the 70’s & 80’s. I can’t remember anywhere where it wasn’t safe to go BUT things did change….. drastically. In the mid to late 80’s “crack” became a problem and the projects EVOLVED….. if you remember. The south Heights was still quite mixed but in the 90’ and early 2000’s it became polarized with many homes becoming rental homes…. and now the blight that you now see. The younger generation started glorifying the “thug life”. Interestingly most of the kids involved in the shootings are not from the Heights …..but come here to do their dirt. It is sad to see the decline of the city of friendly people. Tax base dried up, poor city government and horrible school board mismanagement all drove a nail in the coffin.

Damn...You drove right by old house @ the 16:36 mark but didn't record it. I lived on the corner of Peck and Maplewood for 10 years; the only problems I had was hookers trying to bum smokes while I was out working on the yard. I miss that house; I've heard all my hard work has gone to shit...

I've lived all over Muskegon, Southern avenue, Hoyt, Seventh street, even Allen Street off Getty by Walgreens and nobody can convince me that Detroit is more dangerous and if anybody disagrees than take a stroll down Evanston off from Getty at 1Am. I bet you'll change your mind quick!
