  • When it comes to separation challenges there are various methods to consider as you begin developing your process. The less known and more complex method is liquid-liquid extraction (LLE).
The general rule: LLE can be avoided if it is more economical to separate chemicals of interest via distillation. However, there are situations where liquid-liquid extraction should be considered. Whereas distillation leverages differences in relative volatility between compounds to make a separation, LLE relies on differences in molecular structure.
There are three key aspects for applying LLE to a separation process:
    1. The first is the selection of an appropriate solvent that is immiscible or only partially miscible with the bulk feed and will selectively extract the components required.
    2. Next, the selection of the appropriate extraction technology for the given process.
    3. Finally, a well-designed and operated pilot test will de-risk the extraction process and ensure that accurate scale-up data is developed.
Industry experts Don Glatz and Brendan Cross will cover this in a live webinar, providing attendees a basic understanding of when and how to apply LLE to a separation problem.
