Well the book was through Patroclus' eyes, and he definitely viewed himself less than what he was. I mean he said he had no skill in fighting but killed the second best fighter of troy. So I believe she was just painting him how he saw himself in her version.

I love TSOA but you're telling me that the Bravest and Best of the myrmidons saw himself as not good at fighting, that it was Achilles gift, that he never grew out of his insecurities? It bothered me. He was a snarky little shit in the Illiad, well loved too, respected, even had a character arc in my opinion. Hades game Patroclus embodies The Illiad Patroclus just right. His body type certainly fits right of that of a Greek warrior, his reasons and indifference. Like he doesn't want to go to war but kept fighting, supporting Achilles in and out of the field and definitely unafraid of calling Achilles shit. Miller's interpretation of Patroclus was new but I don't hate it since it fits the story she's telling.

Every single person knows at least a little what self doubt feels like, so it makes him more relatable and feel more like a person than a great warrior. And to be fair pat only had training for fighting up until he started going to achilles' lessons(my rough estimate is about 10-13 years old idk), and even with Chiron they never trained fighting. So it wasn't unreasonable to think he wasn't a great fighter seeing as he had little training. Overall I think she did a great job of representing pat how he might see himself compared to how others view him.

When I Recommend TSOA to my bookfriends, the conclusion is mostly only 'that'. Patroclus was very well loved, respected not just for his fighting skills but for his gentleness, loyalty and morality. (He was a snarky little shit too) Hades game Patroclus embodied those qualities and it is a superior interpretation of Patroclus in my opinion. But that's just me.
