  • Cheap digital calipers commonly become unusable as the electronics fail and the jaws close to 5.08mm or 0.200 inches instead of zero. They also drain batteries as the off button only turns off the display. Join me as I hunt down what causes the fault and how I fixed it.

Great effort and well done getting it working. I don't think it is the xebra connector or the battery that is the problem. The counter chip (under the black blob) value is corrupted and adds +0.2 inch. It comes out of the data port with the same error so I don't think it anything to do with the internal LCD. It's not limited to a particular brand either, I have two totally different units here that show the exact same fault.

I did notice the black blob was a different size and shape on all circuits boards I have. I thought at first the fault was internal and had something to do with the blob or what is under it but I concluded that the Zebra connector has something to do with the fault as I fixed it. I do agree there is still something amiss internally as the fault occurs on a brand new set when installing the battery. I cannot do any more fault finding as all mine are fixed now. Are you able to try to fix yours by following the last step I did in the video? I was hoping someone would comment (who has the fault) and can let me know if the foam cutting on the back fixed it.

@@AlanShed I have one that I may look at. I had another one that I put in the bin that worked perfectly for 5 years and then developed the fault. Would be interesting to know the route cause.

What was the music track you had playing over this video?

They were just random songs I grabbed from the Video editor program's royalty-free Smartsound music library. The video editor is Cyberlink PowerDirector
