The Oogie Boogie Song from The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of their best, and you get to hear the bass sing his freaking heart out. (and his 5 freaking octave range) for added fun, turn on the closed captions (there is a little joke at the end) Voice Play loves to go theatrical for their videos, they do many of them up right.

This was actually my first time hearing this, and I've got to say that it wouldn't have been my first choice of their performances to watch. The suggestions that have already been made will absolutely blow your mind (my personal recommendations are Dream On, Hoist the Colors, Oogie Boogie's Song, and this may seem a little weird, their Little Mermaid Medley). The bass singer, Geoff Castellucci, also has some "solo" stuff (you'll understand the quotation marks when you see one) here on TH-cam which you may want to check out (e.g. Sixteen Tons, Ghost Riders in the Sky, Misty Mountains Cold).

Layne (beatboxer) and Geoff (pronounced Jeff), the two guys sitting down, have been friends and singing together since middle school, so more than half their life at this point and singing professionally together for 20 some years. Layne is an incredibly talented beatboxer, sounds like the guy swallowed a drum set and Geoff's deep notes sound so much like an actual base, and they have such chemistry between them, I don't doubt that you thought there was more than one beat boxer going on with the way that they complement each other. The bald tenor on the left, Eli (pronounced Ellie) was also someone they've known since middle school, has been a member of their band for a long time also, though not a founding member like Layne and Geoff. Cesar (tenor/baritone on the right) is the newest member, been with them between a year and a year and a half now, and is a great addition. Ashley has been a featured performer in several of their videos now. By the way, Ashley was never physically in the air, they achieved that effect strictly through green screening. Almost all of their arrangements are done by Layne or Geoff, Eli does the lighting, and whoever does the arrangement is usually the one directing the video and editing it. They do a lot of the mixing, but the amazing Ed Boyer does the final mix, I think nearly all the a cappella groups use him, he's a genius. Geoff does solo songs/videos also, and Layne has done some Steadicam camera work for those, but obviously they have to use outside help for filming these group videos. This is a terrific rabbit hole to fall into, all of these guys are incredibly talented, with insane ranges and the ability to act with their voices and their bodies. I always feel that VoicePlay is the perfect name for them, because they not only put on a play in effect by how much they emote for the audience, but the play part so often refers to the fact that you can see they are having such fun doing what they love to do for a living, and never taking themselves to seriously.

Sorry not to be judgy and I don't know a lot about this group so I could be wrong but I think it was their former member Earl they knew since middle school (earl, geoff, and layne), and Eli the awesome possum came later. ??? Great reaction, and welcome to the madness! This one was arranged by Layne, and the humor here is classic Layne. (Who ever arranges, makes all of the key decisions and usually does the video too. Most are either Layne or Geoff.) Layne takes his humor all of the way up to the edge of classic slapstick - but with such a delicate touch that you'll howl. It's more perspective than anything else. I LOVE his humor.
If you want some seriously deranged humor, check out Hall of the Mountain King that they released for Halloween this year. (also arranged by Layne.) Watch closely, everything is flying by so fast you'll miss half of it on your first take. And yeah, Hall of the Mountain King is a classical piece without lyrics - but you don't think they'll let that stop them, do you?

Every day I look for reactors who have never heard Voiceplay. It is such a hoot to see someone hear them for the first time. They lost two members during the pandemic; their high tenor left for personal reasons in 2020 and the baritone was recruited by the US Navy and is singing with them now. The baritone on the right in this video has been with them for about 18 months. They dropped a Christmas piece today, a song that has made me cringe since it first came out. However, their arrangement and performance is original and funny and I love it. The Chipmunk Song, Christmas Don't Be Late.
The arrangements are usually done by either Geoff Castellucci, the bass, or Layne Stein, the beatboxer, they usually trade off month to month. Whichever does the arrangement takes full control of the production, set, costume and makeup styles. They work with a makeup artist, Rick Underwood for some of their pieces (they get quite theatrical) and an outside camera crew. Their lighting and effects are done by Eli (rhymes with jelly) Jacobson, the bald tenor. By the way, he is a rocking beast - Hoist the Colours from Pirates of the Caribbean 3 should be next.
Subscribed in anticipation of more Voiceplay and Geoff.

While most of my suggestions for more VoicePlay and Geoff Castellucci solo videos have already been mentioned, I would like to put in a plug for their version of We Don't Talk About Bruno from the Disney Encanto movie. They’re the “theatre kids” of acapella, often incorporating costumes and makeup and really going all out. The bass you liked is Geoff Castellucci and he has a lot of music on his individual channel. Definitely check out their other work. The are VERY theatrical with their videos. At the moment they have 4 main members and have a guest 5th. They only have one baritone in the group and it's the beatboxer Lane. Geoff is another very low bass vocalist, but he doesn't go all that low in this song. Oogie Boogie Song is a good reference for Geoff's range, but Hoist the Colors is one of my favorite songs they've done. Also check out some of their older work. Their Queen in 5 minutes is amazing.

Since everyone else has already covered the basics of the group, I'll cut straight to the suggestions. 🤣
You pointed out Cesar's (baritone) vocals in this video, so I thought you might enjoy some other videos where he features prominently. Probably his most 'in front' song is VoicePlay's cover of "I Can't Make You Love Me", originally by Bonnie Raitt, though he gets some wonderful moments in "We're Good" and "Butter" as well. Another standout is his performance in "Hoist the Colours", but that whole song will be a knockout, so be prepared for that. It's a reactor-slayer. You still haven't heard Geoff truly go deep, nor Eli nail some gritty rock tenor heights.

VoicePlay is well known for their comedy, their theatric approach, their extremely interesting arrangements, their insane voices, for doing almost every aspect of this creative process themselves, and their top notch videos! They also try to give all the members their time in the spotlight throughout the song, unless the song really requires a big solo lead by a single person.
Their bass Geoff often gets some solo lines, but often his most impressive parts are the bass line he is holding in the background while the others sing lead. The complexity and agility he shows in the bassline is really impressive and often overlooked unless you pay close attention to it.
The same goes for their beatboxer. He does an insane amount of work in the background, a lot of it not even properly heard over all the other voices, but so important to the feel of the song.
It's not until you hear the karaoke tracks that they provide to their patrons, that you really get to hear the insane duo that is Geoff and Layne. Their rhythm section is awe inspiring to behold.
Eli is the bald rock tenor, known for his powerful rock belts, amazing riffs, insane character voices and being able to sing a lot higher in mixed voice than what is normal for male singers.
Cesar is the new baritenor of the group. A very expressive singer, a total sweetheart, and a beautiful voice!

Cesar de la Rosa is the baritone. Geoff Castellucci is bass, Eli Jacobson is tenor and Layne Stein is vocal percussion.... Technically...... They ALL can and have gone way beyond their vocal titles.. Geoff is described as a bass but he has a beautiful baritone voice which he displays much more in his own videos.. Check out ghost riders in the sky, Shenandoah, ain't no sunshine... Eli (pronounced Ellee like jelly) has the most phenomenal rock tenor but has also covered bass and baritone parts.. Cesar, well he's just Cesar.. Master of sassiness and he recently hit notes you would never expect from a baritone... Layne is vocal percussion extrodinaire... I don't think there is a noise that he can't make. He is also a lovely warm toned baritone that can hit bass. .. VP also do 99 % of their own productions.. With Halloween being just around the corner, try In The Hall Of The Mountain King. The music itself is from Edvard Grieg in 1875, the characters are trolls, and there are no lyrics. It really doesn't matter. The cauldron bubbles, the additions to the pot changes, tempo, voice changes, and it is one of my favorites. I was in band in high school and we played it. I never tired of it - but it never occurred that it could sound like that!

The top three a cappella groups are Pentatonix, Voiceplay and Home Free. They are all five members with beat boxers and a bass. You need to check out Home Free too. Most reactors start with Man of Constant Sorrow. Thanks, this was fun! Also one of my favorites from Voiceplay is Enemy from Imagine Dragons ft. AleXa. They kill it!

      And The Bass Gang! 🙂
They're still overlooked and underrated, but they are AMAZING. 🙂

You may have actually heard two people beatboxing since Geoff , the bass, also beat boxes. In addition you got to hear two baritones as Layne , the beatboxer, was originally the baritone until their beat boxer Scott Porter, who appears in their cover of HALO left to pursue an acting career.
I came here from your review of Enemy, so I’ll just add a few recommendations: Warriors again from Imagine Dragons, Skyrim, which is fantastic, Hoist the Colours, Dream On, and do not miss the piece that’s coming out on Friday since it covers a metal band. They will attack just about any genre you can find from orchestral music to Disney to pop to country and now to metal.

OMG!!!!! I loved your reaction to this song. Please review "Hoist the colors" or "Dragonborn comes". They are both awesome and you get to hear the bass go VERY low.

Your first introduction to Geoff Castellucci I take it? 🙂 There are 3 acapella basses. Besides Geoff, Tim Foust of Homefree and Avi Kaplan formally with Pentatonix and now on his own as a singer-songwriter with his own band.

One of the big reasons I prefer Home Free or Pentatonix is that Voiceplay compose their arrangements specifically to show off Geoff's range. They'll often give him a verse and have him sing it 4 octaves lower just because he can. Mitch from Pentatonix has an incredibly high range. Pentatonix showcases it by giving him the high parts that might have gone to Kristen instead. Voiceplay are all talented singers - they don't need to lean on showing off how low Geoff can go to prove it.

There are a few other songs that I like better....We don't talk about Bruno,
The Mermaid medley, are fun songs...
Oogie Boogie, This Is Halloween and Hide and Seek (Ding dong) with Lauren Paley are great Songs for Halloween!
