Personally, I disagree with the Minister of Exteriors here -- I'd much rather hang wet coats in the mudroom or closet and keep the hallway pretty! Totally loving these videos, by the way. I get so excited to come along for your design day!

Tiles straight up, I see cubes....sideways SNOWFLAKES ! LOL!!!
Paint ...Paint...Paint ! And oh my goodness.... that first bathroom with that tile on the floor .... AWESOME !!!
Love seeing this all come together! But I had no doubts it would be sensational .... I mean after all ...... ❤️

I see cubes and snowflakes both ways, but agree that the flakes are easier to see after the tiles are rotated. Love the paint instead of pine. I see the appeal of warm coats, but I think they will make the hall look messy and they will scuff up the paint and drip water onto the rad.

    1) Agreed: on lower level, paint out beams (ceiling height too low) and it will leave the impact for the upper floors with the higher ceilings for a statement; 2) Disagree: Entry/Closet/Mudroom/hallway: do not add additional coat storage above heater (there is adequate storage/utility already and you don't want water dripping on the heater) use this through-fare to create something of visual impact- it's a hallway with doors so keep people moving through. 3) Love the Tim Horton's shout out for sponsorship! Sarah Richardson's brand is a Candian Icon of equal status!! Cheers!

Totally agree with Kris on kubes one way, snowflakes the other. And in the master I love the painted ceiling...but on the ground level I'd keep the pine beams and just paint the space between, similar to what's been done in the other lower areas. Compromise, so Canadian!

I'll buck the trend, probably too many British restoration shows, but, I'd keep just a couple beams natural, and paint the rest out. Would add more of that Scandi vibe.

I agree with you Sarah that the pine on the lower level needs to be painted. It creates a choppy space the way that it is right now. Regarding the area with the radiator, I think that it has to have a wow factor. Even though warm coats is a great idea, it should not be the first thing that you see, in my opinion.
The tiles in the bathroom looked like cubes until he turned them on their side, which looked better to me. The project is turning out great!

  • @paulacarr122

I didn't see the snowflake until Kris turned the tiles.
I was a little worried about the peninsula in the kitchen, but it doesn't seem like it'll block much traffic (if any). It reminds me of that very sweet kitchen you did for the Newfie couple where the wife was a baker? Tiny space, but soooooo functional.
I'm still mostly an anti-painted wood girl, but I see what you mean about painting the ceilings in the lower level, and keeping the natural wood in the upper level. It almost makes it seem cathedral-like.

I would paint the first floor. I love painted wood, but the upstairs I would have painted the ceiling and left the wood raw. I didn’t like the original stain color, so I would have stripped the beams. The tile is beautiful. I too saw stars when the tile was repositioned. I think some black iron accents would be beautiful. Love your show!

I have to agree with you Sarah and paint it white (or the light gray) downstairs (and also upstairs too). It gives it a crisp look! I agree with Sarah in making the entrance look pretty and the other room will be cozy warm if the door is closed, which will dry the coats..... or toss them into the dryer that is a few feet away.

  • @KellyCapwell1984
    @KellyCapwell1984 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Painting the lower entrance hallway would be my preference as well. I agree with you Sarah, that the lower orange wood ceiling, yellow wood tones in trim, and the (3rd) wood colour on the new doors make for a hodgepodge look, and that painting would pull it all together. As for upstairs, I’m not certain I’d paint the ceiling. It’s a chalet and not a city home and as such, I think the ceilings left as they are could work really well to warm up the chalet. Painted walls the right, lighter colour however, would tone down orange hues in current ceiling (or that could just be the lighting I’m seeing in the video). Anyhow, that’s just my take. Looking forward to seeing the changes as they’re revealed! Love these videos!! 😍🙌👏👌 (P.S. Tell M.o.E. he’s doing an outstanding job filming these episodes! 🎥👏🙌). Have a great weekend! 🎄

I love the function of hanging the coats above the rad. Is the entry floor there also heated? Love how it dries up the mess.
The white paint looks amazing, so much brighter & you can actually appreciate it now. Agree with painting the wood on the main fllor as well. The orange shades need to go.
I see the "t.v." cut out in the shower was filled in. 😆
Amazing, looking forward to seeing it complete.

Actually I like the warm coat idea, you always need multiple coats in Winter, especially if you are busy with outdoor activities. The mudroom may fill up quickly. I love the painted timber, all that orange wood has to go. The pale grey is very elegant. The circular tiles are perfect.

I love the chalet type of architecture and I would highlight the beams by leaving them natural and unpainted. Simply White on the flat parts of the ceiling. Too much white takes away too much from the lovely architecture. If you paint them all white then maybe add a wrought iron detail at the apex of each beam?
On the long entry wall I would go with a row of thin/proportional tobacco baskets which would hide hooks sticking out from the middle of each basket. That way they are pretty and functional to temporarily hang light jackets/dog leashes. Love the tile either way and that floor tile design is amazing! Thanks so much for your content.

great video thank you! So, paint all timber that has even the remote-est tinge of yellow or orange. It's so 90's. I had timber throughout my house everywhere in the 90's as it was the fashion. Definitely not so now. The tiles look better the way Chris wants to have them. Easier to see snowflakes. Kudos to your 'darling camerman' - he does a great job and I think some hooks above the heater would be great but not the whole wall - look too much like a school cloakroom then. The mirror idea sounds good and maybe something to throw keys etc onto. I love your videos Sarah. Please keep them up for us!! This chalet is looking so good! Votes: (1 - Tile) - I like the 'sideways' or second direction better. Yes, you still see cubes, but it's less obvious. (2 - Paint or No Paint) - Definitely paint. Painting a house always reminds me of those old Bob Ross videos and how he said "there are no mistakes, only happy accidents." :) Not that painting the beams white was an accident, but I just don't think you can ever go wrong with white. Even if you don't like it initially, you can always add elements to make the room what you want against a white slate.

I vote paint the wood! You'll still know that it's wood, you'll still get the natural cracks of it, just in a more modern look. Plus, painting it light will make the space feel even LARGER!!
Or I guess I should say: Hi, I'm Tristan and I love white paint! haha

Why not build in a console over the rad and use decorative rad cover of pierced metal for the top? A few delicate (in appearance) metal cross-bars (like metal mullions) in the console table frame, would make it sturdy enough, and it would be cheap to do. You would still get all the heat for Andrew's idea, yet have landing pad for keys, glasses and decorative bling. Just a thought. Love your designs!
