I can see why she would think protons are self absorbed. They exist at the nucleus, all clustered together, and different elements are defined by how many protons they have which makes them seems like they're the most important.

Protons are definitely self absorbed - the number of electrons define how an atom reacts chemically, and the number of neutrons define how an atom act radioactively. Yet it's the number of protons that get to decide what the atom's name should be.
