Been enjoying all your videos. I would say that the majority of current fantasy has very little fantastical creatures due to the zeitgeist in the genre. It will be interesting to see what show The Wheel of Time may do to the movement. Regarding the WoT, I could never get through the first chapter as it just smacked of LoftR, though i am watching the tv series to see if it pulls my interest. My current fav fantasy writer is Anthony Ryan - would love to see you have an interview with him.
Thanks, glad you are enjoying them! It depends how you define fantastical creatures and what area of fantasy. Urban fantasy is full of them and every single book is built on that. Many fantasy novels have demons, a lot now have things like djinn and other spirits, many have dragons, there are less orcs than there used to be, but elves are forever popular, The Blacktongue Thief has goblins, Kevin Hearne and John Gwynne have all sorts of monsters, dragons, giants etc. S. A. Chakraborty has lots of creatures, so there are plenty of books with those in if you want them. WoT will have little impact in terms of what is being published today.
What fantasy races have you created in your books? What are they called? What is special about them?
Sparkly vampires aren't my cup of tea either, but you have to admit: that's literally a great example of reinventing an existing fantasy race!
It was definitely not something we'd seen before, so I give her credit for that at a bare minimum! 😆
