    Interesting ... and I can't overstate how important The Midnight Special was to us (teenagers in the 70s)...it was the only place to see rock bands on TV. I have a clear memory of watching Fleetwood Mac do "Rhianon" for the first time.

      Funny because the Telecasters with humbuckers from this era have 2 volumes and 2 tones with a 3-way switch up on the top, like a Les Paul!😂

    • @michaelaiello9525
      @michaelaiello9525 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. Especially with the all maple neck and body. 2 knobs and toggle I always felt it was a secret Tele. I have this exact one btw… in better shape. But my cousin gave it to me when I was a kid so I am sentimentally attached to it . The narrow nut is unfortunate,. But otherwise a dreamy neck and very unique sounding.

    I had an L6S in 1975, and it was an exceptional guitar. 24 frets was a complete rarity then. It was one of the cleanest sounding guitars I've ever owned. Sadly it didn't survive a car crash. I would buy another in a heartbeat.

    Your had a Silverburst L6-S Deluxe and it was of only two I have been able to document. The other one is regularly played by Martha Davis of the Motels. I saw her playing it just last February and you can see lots of TH-cam Videos of her playing that guitar. There is even a Wikipedia photo of her and it from 2010, so I think that proves it is different from the Silverburst L6-S Deluxe from your old video. Those are the only two I can find.

  • @TheFlowNetwork
    @TheFlowNetwork ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I bought my 1973 L6-S in 1982 when I was 14. The neck was slightly twisted even though it was less than 10 years old. But the thing played and sounded great. I've never owned a guitar with such a variety of great tones. Those Bill Lawrence Superhumbuckers are just amazing pickups. After living in the tropics (Thailand) for the past 26 years the neck is twisted to a crazy degree. I've had it straightened twice but it just keeps going back to the same twist...and still plays great. Not a single dead fret or buzz and the intonation is spot on despite the radical twist. And to be honest...it kind of makes it easier to play. You don't need to bend your wrist as much.

  • @GCKelloch
    @GCKelloch ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'm pretty sure Bill Lawrence designed the L5-S and L6-S, as well as the redesigned Howard Roberts model with the oval sound hole and phase-aligned top and back. He was the Nashville factory chief engineer by 1970. I discussed my concern about the thin portion under the neck joint with him on the phone. The thin body was wider to be more stable while stumming. It may have sounded better in the way it absorbed some midrange. Maple can be too midrangy. He also mentioned a special vacuum finishing method he used for the L6-S. It stiffened the whole structure and never required refinishing. Gibson made some unfortunate cost-saving changes after '73.

  • @Flamewalk
    @Flamewalk ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The most likely reason for the bridge SH-4 being microphonic is the cover. It doesn't seem to be soldered to the baseplate, and you also usually need to either pot the covered pickup, or pad the cover from the underneath it (between bobbins and the cover).

    I miss my 1973 L6-S. Trogly actually did an episode on my exact one that ended up in Rochester, NY. It was on Reverb. Priced for way more than what it was really worth but was a very versatile Gibson for sure. I highly recommend an L6-S Custom for anyone thinking about buying one. Very unique! If you paid more than $1200 ($1000 for the guitar + $200 for the finish), IMHO you got burned. However, IF it's part of a solid L6 collection, (which it appears to be) it was worth it. You can replace the original parts and wait until the value creeps up while playing it, and load the piggy parts onto a player axe.
      It sounds pretty good, so enjoy it.

    Brings back memories of my L6s I had in the 1970s...my first Gibson.
    It also brings back memories of buying individual Seymour Duncan pickups and finding that the stupid thing was always out of phase with the Gibson pickup. Reversing the wires wasn't always easy due to the ground wire and the cover.
    I lost respect for Seymour Duncan for that reason and stopped using them.

    About 30 years ago I saw one of these in a natural finish in Gruhn’s Guitara Nashville. I had no idea what I was looking at. It was used for like $450 or $500. A few scratches here and there and someone did a half ass job of replacing the bridge PUP. I was tempted to buy it, simply because it was a Gibson ,and stripped down Studio LPs we’re selling (all be it new) for $700+. I asked a tech there what I was looking at and he knew nothing about this model either, so I passed.

    Gibson’s advertising for the L6-S when they first brought it out must have been pretty good. In my teenage mind, it was going to set the new standard for Gibson rock guitars and supplant the Les Paul. Seems ludicrous now.

    I have this guitar.. My cousin gave me it in ‘79 or ‘80. Glitter White… ok I always thought it was Cream Sparkle. Bolt on, but intonation has been rock steady for 40 plus years now!. Super low action absolutely straight. Nut is crazy narrow. Bummed that this demo isn’t complete. Mine has more finish checking but better overall. Neck on mine much better. Mine definitely is original .. not like this option. And my tuners are original and function incredibly well. Just my luck to be given the least valuable Gibson ever! How much is an original one of these in better condition… like mine? Mine originally came with the yellow interior case btw. I had to replace with the purple like this a few years back…. and now that I see how much you are asking for an L6 case I feel like I totally scored on mine!

      I think it was this channel that bought the Buckethead LP With twisted neck a few years back.

      One of the first things I remember about kiss on the back of the records they had their endorsements. I’ll have to actually check an old record to see if there’s a mention of Gibson. But I always remember it saying that Peter Criss plays Pearl drums.🥁🥁
