I LITERALLY said "I need to learn how to do backgrounds for my character art" and this video pops up a few minutes later. You are clearly the omnipotent messiah and I will not be convinced otherwise
Your joke-e personality is so refreshing with all this advice, it really makes the learning process much easier and light hearted, like "its all going to be okay". :D
OH HECK THAT 2ND BG LMAO- definitely gonna try this sometime! and the 3rd method is just- WOW. Looks super cool! Thank you for the tutorial, Marc, your channel is a treasure.
Amazing class as always. Learning how to do simple low effort high yield backgrounds, I can quickly put Rick Astley everywhere. I mainly Krita but this is helpful.
I'm drawing my friend's character for her birthday. I got the sketch ready and suddenly realisation hit me that I am not very proficient when it comes to backgrounds XD Thank you, you just saved the birthday present ^^
I actually use the gradient tool very extensively to create detail backgrounds with barely even using the brush too, in perspective too. It saves on hours of work it's impressive what you can do with it.
@@YTartschool while I would agree on that but it gets a lot a good details results fast that I can work off of, but it doesn't stop me to add my own details after. Here is an example of of in my own speed painting video link here: th-cam.com/video/tUc4Rocp0ho/w-d-xo.html
No joke, my wife just said to me, "You should add some backgrounds to your characters," and just like the explosion effect that Marc loves to use, this video appeared! Thank you so much for your help Marc!
I'm no painter and I'm extremely lazy with backgrounds, however for sure I can still apply these tips to my pics. Too many times I overthink backgrounds and spend so much time creating one when all it needs to be is as simple as these three examples in this vid. Thanks man
Another one which is a great fit is the "dynamic square" A quick cut of colour, or the same blur type you used on the whole image, but cropped down into a size smaller than the character, so aspects of their body pop out of the image behind them. Literally making an effect to "pop" out your character from the canvas, while beinng in the canvas. WoTC does this a bunch with their dynamic watercolour splash behind a character, but their feet, arms, or torso are out of the splash.
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE??!! I just found a treasure trove of very helpful tutorials and I've been binge watching your videos. Why haven't found you sooner. He helped me solve my art problems especially doing backgrounds for character arts.
Thank you Marc - this video is going to help me save so much time on simpler pieces!!! Will you be willing to make a part 2 that demonstrates character backgrounds where we can use shapes as pointers to direct the viewers’ eyes to important features?
This is the first channel I've found that says actual helpful shit. Like everyone else gives such general information but your channel gives all this great information for free! I have learned so much and improved so much in digital art and as someone who is in art school for traditional art- this stuff has been INSANELY helpful.
This is the second time in a row where I needed something and a video from you appeared covering just what I needed How... how do you do that.. I suppose those 99 years of experience made you omnipotent
Your classes are amazing, i trully wish (from the bottom of my heart) that God bless you and your family with peace, protection and joy in life little things. Cheers, Marc
Thank you, i needed this. I recently found out about your channel and it really helps. Sometimes i tend to struggle and focus more on the background then the character for some reason, but now i know a more simple way. Thanks again Marc
I'm gonna get so much value out of this, $5 is the least I could do Marc; thx for all you do for your community, and for artists looking to make a career for themselves in general.
Thank you so much for this. I want to teach like you to people in my language simple and easy. It's my first year of being digital artist and I am improving a lot better thanks to you and people like you. Stay blessed and take care Marc Sensei.
I never comment on youtube, but this video came (in perfect quality) to attend me when i NEED the most and these bgs are exactly what i wanted!! Thanks Marc!! (also props for the 1M subs*, we all love you)
Great tips Marc! I’ve done a couple of these myself prior, but I enjoy your tweaks. Btw, could you do a similar video about making characters look cohesive with full backgrounds? I think that’s a relatable and similar topic
Omg, thank you! This is so helpful for the project I have been banging my head against the wall over. I tend to get caught up trying to decide details to include in the background and lose motivation to finish the actual piece.
Those are so easy i can't believe i never thought of this before! Very professional with no effort, we love this! Thank you for sharing your secrets with us Marc! I'll definitely try this out!
The second background had me like 👁👄👁 I loved this video. It was short and informative. I need to try those background tips for myself and see what I can do!
Ahhhhh yes!! A quality video to start my weekend. When I found Marc, it was one of the best things the youtube algorithm has done for me. Thank you Marc for being such a great teacher!! Also, how do you come up with so many crazy awesome ideas?? I mean, when I see your art I'm always reminded there are no limits to creativity. Anyways, have a nice weekend! (Your my favorite artist!!) (Also, the intros are the best I've ever seen for any youtuber)
I'm sitting here just this morning, with a character piece I sank endless hours into, worked on finishing all week, and lamenting how I'm only halfway done without a background to fit or any good skills with such You have never been more timely with one of your videos Marc, I can't thank you enough for the struggle you've saved me. Bless your bald-mans wisdom!
Very helpful! I actually do the last one make it so the white of the background are the clouds to feed into a chara standing on a well defined circular stand. Similar to a character figure. :) Another option is to do the same as above minus the ground. I paint using textured brush an almost airbrush/crayon/graffiti splash around the silhouette. I will try the minimal wall and blur backdrop next time. :) or even combine multiple styles to create a mix and match. 👏❤️
I always had a hard time trying to figure out how to do background and you had help me sooo much!! Even though I don’t do digital art I will apply it to my traditional art!
I have a video suggestion. Please do a video on how to match the character’s colors with that of the background, so that it looks like the character belongs in that background. The lightning of the environment should affect the hues, values & saturation of the character, in order to create the appearance that the character is physically present in that environment. I’ve seen artists try to create coherent colors in all parts of the image by applying a layer filled with a certain color on top of both the background & the character layers, and then reduce the opacity of that layer, so that it looks like both the character & background have the same hue. I don’t know if you would recommend this method, or if you would use a different approach.
Always wondering how to create a proper background. I want one, just don't know how and what and meeeh... it's frustrating sometimes. So this was very helpful! Thanks
the third image is similar to how I usually do, but the different is that I spent too much time on something so simple while in fact I could just do it quickly and focus on the character themselves. The first one is something I'd love to do every so often since it's nice and simple, the second one is kinda new trick that I never thought of but still won't do because even though it's simple but it's kinda bad when you just do it half-heartedly.
I like the idea of just showing a small example of implying or suggesting where your character might be coming from with that 3rd concept. Definitely gives more attention to the character without the background looking too basic or generic 🤘
I love your videos, they're so helpful! you got me out of art-block tbh I keep finding exactly what I want... but I have yet to find hats tutorials. can you do hats, beanies (desperate), headscarf/hijab (u don't have to do this), helmets and such! maybe you already done and I haven't found it yet
Usually a character dont make a pose on background he is just in there. Its a good tip. Dont try pose your character on a scenary, merge him with scenary as a scene of a movie or something loke that. Pose are usefull to character design, wen you are trying to demonstrate how the character is in full body
Hi marc! I recently joined the artschool and im very excited about it :) Anyway, one tutorial which I dont think ive seen on your channel yet is fat bodytypes. I struggle with fat distribution on characters and it would be great if we could get a video on that!
I started learning painting all sorts of backgrounds for my splash arts but these will come in handy if i ever get to lazy to paint a background😂 thanks my dudes❤️👌
I see you're joining us again this week for a new ART classss, that's a good life decision. Very smart 11/10
AYEE
nah i'd say this is 12/10 smart decision
If this is 11 out of 10 then what is 4 out of 10? That’s gonna be stuck in my head for a while. I have to say I really appreciate your sense of humor
Woah! you also do 3D ? i am learning 3D by myself watching youtube, it would be nice seeing how you sculpt and whatnot in 3D.
I LITERALLY said "I need to learn how to do backgrounds for my character art" and this video pops up a few minutes later. You are clearly the omnipotent messiah and I will not be convinced otherwise
You are the chosen one!!!!!
Proof that google is listening. (Jk)
Amen
me too
Ssme
I always finish watching your tutorials with the huge urge to start drawing right away and I feel very grateful for that. Very inspiring!
Your joke-e personality is so refreshing with all this advice, it really makes the learning process much easier and light hearted, like "its all going to be okay". :D
You should all trust Marc’s advice. He’s been doing this for 99 years ✨
OH HECK THAT 2ND BG LMAO-
definitely gonna try this sometime! and the 3rd method is just- WOW. Looks super cool! Thank you for the tutorial, Marc, your channel is a treasure.

I'm drawing my friend's character for her birthday. I got the sketch ready and suddenly realisation hit me that I am not very proficient when it comes to backgrounds XD Thank you, you just saved the birthday present ^^
The 3rd way is just GENIUS, definitely will try that out with my illustrations soon
I actually use the gradient tool very extensively to create detail backgrounds with barely even using the brush too, in perspective too. It saves on hours of work it's impressive what you can do with it.
It just tends to look very “software generated” unless you do something more to it. Gradients can be nice, but they can also very easily ruin a piece
@@YTartschool while I would agree on that but it gets a lot a good details results fast that I can work off of, but it doesn't stop me to add my own details after. Here is an example of of in my own speed painting video link here: th-cam.com/video/tUc4Rocp0ho/w-d-xo.html

4:33 WOW, BEST BACKGROUND EVEER!
These designs are so stunning, amazing work as always 😍😍
i was so tired of my boring ass background... and then I saw this. YOU ARE A GOD SEND
I'm no painter and I'm extremely lazy with backgrounds, however for sure I can still apply these tips to my pics.
Too many times I overthink backgrounds and spend so much time creating one when all it needs to be is as simple as these three examples in this vid. Thanks man
that last example is pretty nice, i've always struggle incorporating backgrounds so that's a nice way to do it thanks ^^
Marc is Omnipresent, there's no way he releases a video right after on a topic I'm interested in
Another one which is a great fit is the "dynamic square"
A quick cut of colour, or the same blur type you used on the whole image, but cropped down into a size smaller than the character, so aspects of their body pop out of the image behind them.

You mean like this. - 0:30 😂
🥲
@@inisipisTV Yes, but dynamic lol
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE??!! I just found a treasure trove of very helpful tutorials and I've been binge watching your videos. Why haven't found you sooner. He helped me solve my art problems especially doing backgrounds for character arts.
I'm using the rule of thirds for most of my to-do drawings. So simplistic background helps alot. Thank ye thank ye 😅
I love your wacky intros as well as your amazing videos! It's what's so iconic about this channel
Thank you Marc - this video is going to help me save so much time on simpler pieces!!!
Will you be willing to make a part 2 that demonstrates character backgrounds where we can use shapes as pointers to direct the viewers’ eyes to important features?
This channel has the most useful art tutorials i’ve ever watched. You are funny too. Thank you so much for giving valuable lessons, Marc
I like the third way! I will try to do that on my next drawings. Thanks for sharing
That 3rd option may be the most work of the three.. but it is so inspiring! I love it.. I am so trying that out on my current project
The fact that you were able to incorporate an easily recognizable meme as a background, was just mind-blowing
This is the first channel I've found that says actual helpful shit. Like everyone else gives such general information but your channel gives all this great information for free! I have learned so much and improved so much in digital art and as someone who is in art school for traditional art- this stuff has been INSANELY helpful.
I've been struggling with backgrounds for awhile now, so seeing this definitely will help, thanks Marc!!
Wow a video that actually legitimately has "simple ways" to improve art that you can immediately apply! Marc, you never fail to deliver on the tips!
This is the second time in a row where I needed something and a video from you appeared covering just what I needed
How... how do you do that..
I suppose those 99 years of experience made you omnipotent
Your classes are amazing, i trully wish (from the bottom of my heart) that God bless you and your family with peace, protection and joy in life little things. Cheers, Marc
Not related to the backgrounds, but the arts you're getting for the videos and thumbnails are having a huge quality boost!
0:49 finally.. the "Class Is In Session, Pay Attention"
With an actual expression of marc brunner sensei
I think you singlehandedly are keeping my drawing faith alive. I hope i'll get better.
This is great. Characters are my strength, backgrounds and visual storytelling are my weaknesses. Gonna try to apply these tips asap.
Wow, thank you for this. I always use a stupid gradient as a background, but now I think I'll use this instead!
i always have a troubling time with BG cuz i always think you gotta put in alot more work to do a good bg. thanks for explaining things. nice vid.
"oh, it's you again"
Took the words right out of my mouth
Thank you, i needed this. I recently found out about your channel and it really helps. Sometimes i tend to struggle and focus more on the background then the character for some reason, but now i know a more simple way. Thanks again Marc

yesss im not horribly late for this classs yessssss thanks teach love this video already
The last one is my favourite!! I can’t wait to try out that technique
These are actually super solid methods. I appreciate this! I can apply these to some current drawings
Ooh, that third one's a cool idea. It's kinda like making a base / mini-diorama for a 3D-printed figurine.
Free class and explosions, it's perfect
Was I just Rick Rolled without being Rick Rolled? What???!!! 🤣
Never late to catch up to mark's tutorials
Ah, our psychic sensei is back with another well-timed video ;)

U saved me when I needed u most tyvm 🙇♀️
Sir, I was just looking for videos about backgrounds few hours ago and you uploaded this. I really need this, thank you ='3
Could you do videos on environments? I really struggle with this sometimes.
I like the idea of just showing a small example of implying or suggesting where your character might be coming from with that 3rd concept. Definitely gives more attention to the character without the background looking too basic or generic 🤘
This is something I've been struggling with lately. SUBBED!
This was very dynamic and useful (and fun). Thanks again Mark
Love this class, I always learn something. I'm way too lazy nowadays to paint an entire landscape, so this class was really helpful. Thanks Marc!
Nice! 🥰🥰🥰 Thank you so much!
Wow SO helpful!!! Thank you so much Marc!
Also, your characters are stunning. Such a treat for the eyes!!
I love your videos, they're so helpful! you got me out of art-block tbh
I keep finding exactly what I want... but I have yet to find hats tutorials.
