I agree, American Idiot is prob the closest in a literal sense.
I’d say Next to Normal is also very punk sounding for a musical.
And Hadestown is a kind of blues punk jazz mix. Really fantastic music and not what you’d “expect” from a tony award winning Broadway play.
Bare the musical pop opera is also very close to punk for a musical, very dramatic very early 2000s angst haha.

1st of all, I really like this, it's great.....Maybe it's the purist and my "old school" nature but this is not what I would call punk....it's something like screamo/punk/rock mix of some sort....but again I'm old and a purist who remembers punk when it was 2 guitars, 1 bass, one vocal and very fast loud drums!!
