I found this marvellous composer completely by accident on TH-cam. Thank you once again Brilliant Classics for not only championing the aknowleged masters of classical music but also composers like this who very clearly deserve much much more attention.
Thank you for presenting this. As a female born in 19th century France she faced insurmountable obstacles to receiving an education and training. Sadly, her family and society in general had no interest in her education or her music. Fortunately, because a few enlightened composers and others recognized her talent, we are fortunate to hear some of her works miraculously salvaged from oblivion.
A comment by San Sains is very telling "I never thought a woman could compose such good music" - It seems even those rare people who recognised her talent and musical voice were often very much crippled by the pervading sexism that was so strong. Although now we like to think of ourselves as a more enlightened age it seems women composers - and also composers who are not white are still not getting nearly enough of a look in. Or a listen to. Hopefully though it is not too optimistic to say the tide is beginning to turn.
this is a beautiful recording & I love the Trois Melodies which I believe are originally for voice....I can't find the sheet music anywhere, where can I find it.....best wishes
