The Tuareg aren’t a radical Islamic militia - although they do ally with them.
A better way to understand the Tuareg is that they are a group of people that have always opposed being forcibly included inside a country - they are traditionally nomadic and self-governing. They differ from the typical ‘freedom fighter’ type because they don’t seek to set up their own country, more just to be left alone in the desert. Azawad etc is more about 'space' than it is about strict 'land' concerns.
Ideologically much closer to anarchists than Jihadists.
They’ll go after whoever the government is, external authority is their main enemy.

If there were armed burglars in your house, wouldnt you throw them out? This convoy was deep inside Tuareg territory, basically on the border with Algeria.
There has been decades long Tuareg resistance to being forced into a country, going back to French colonial times. Very long history of resistance to any and all outside authority. They don’t care about Russians/french/Nato whatever, it’s all the same: outside soldiers coming in to boss them around (in their eyes).
And there is nothing unusual about tribes “somehow” taking a decision. Democracy etc isn’t some sort of alien concept outside the west.

This is reminiscent of how NATO used paid Islamists in the Chechen war and who were later moved to the Libya war and finally moved to Syria. All these wars were funded by the USA/NATO. The Western countries have never behaved decently in Africa to get over its natural wealth.
I can understand these countries hiring in Wagner troops to train their own militaries. Unlike Western Europe, Russia has never had colonies in Africa.
Almost all countries in Africa participated in the Saint Petersburg Economic Forum and most want to join BRICS.

Sounds like a situation another legendary Willie found himself in. Willie Apiata, one of the very few SAS to receive the VC, as the SAS usually aren't public about their members or what they do. His squad was attacked at night after they had set up camp, and he was away from the main force. An RPG blew him off the bonnet of his vehicle and wounded two other soldiers. He managed to carry the more badly injured squad mate over 70 meters, retreating back to the main force while under fire. Amazingly none of the bullets hit him or the other retreating squad mate. Then he rearmed himself, and joined the counter attack with the main force who managed to drive off the attackers. He used the phrase - they stopped shooting a long time before we did.

@@adocuric9154 that is a good question, to be candid, something we learned in Vietnam was that the VC/NVA/PAVN regularly infiltrated the village or hamlet Civilian Irregular Defence Group (CIDG) program, Mike Forces and Mobile Guerrilla Forces. It was accepted that these units had at least one and sometimes way more infiltrators who were there to both learn as much as they can from, and about, the Green Beret trainers. There is also the fact that some of the dudes we train have little to no formal education. You would be surprised at just how many people do not know left from right! Fortunately, they knew colors, so we put red tape on the top of their boots and the cuff of their right sleeve. I saw a photo of a Ukrainian special forces instructor recently in Mali. Supposedly they were training the Tuaregs. This ambush screams they had more intelligence, possibly Ukrainian intelligence. I don't think this was just bad luck. The fact that the Tuaregs want to hand over the prisoners to Ukraine for a sign of solidarity says something. Of course Russia would say they aren't going to hand them over. If they are working with Ukraine, they would benefit so much more by handing them rather than by random.

Regarding "bad guys vs bad guys" though, the only reason why this wouldn't be the case, is that these PMC guys ultimately are helping Mali fight against terrorism in a committed way that Mali have said wasn't previously done by France. Mali at the time had claimed that the lack of progress was due to France working with the terrorists, and it does seem that PMC is one of a number of reasons that Mali (outside of this ambush) is seeing military gains overall as part of its broader strategy.
That being said about PMC standing on the side of good in this instance, I don't know the ins and outs of any remuneration deals, so can't speak to if they are onerous or fair.

I was an SF bubba and my favorited classes were raids and ambushes. There is nothing like an ambush to replenish and collect equipment in a battlefield recovery. Tuaregs armed groups are not djhihadists!!!
They are nationalists fighters for the cause of the independance of the Azawad region ( Northern part of Mali)
They of course are muslims but not djihadists!!!
They are at war with them since 2013 and only have been allied to the islamists for a few months against the malian regime.
During the French presence in Mali they were allied to the French army but considered terrorists by the Malian state.
That's the main reason behind the anger of the Malian armed forces toward France, and that's why the FAMA ( Mali army) accused France to be friends of the "terrorists"

Nationalists who conduct military operations are - in fact - terrorists…I know because my country invented terrorism and most of our national heroes are terrorists…..lol

the group is recognised to be a affiliate of AQIM by the usa and its rolling with all the bad guys of this sahel region including isis you can read about it on the au and un websites
what people dont realize is these groups are what allow the modern slave trade drug weapons smuggling through africa and they are the void of chaos that allows aqim and
isgs and collaborative affiliates another safe haven where they can operate out from to continue to attack not only west of africa region but even the west and europe itself so lets not romanticize that they arent that would be a mistake ,the people suggesting ukraine trade the captured dudes for weapons are absolutely idiots and should be put on a list for trying to aid and consort with a known terrorist network

From this we an easily draw the conclusion that in return for covert support viz arms and advisors from Ulcer Sam and the Nato West, the 'newly liberated' region or State of 'EasyWad' would be plundered of its natural resources (oil, Lithium, Cobalt, Coltan etc...... as per the usual gameplan) by the said United Corporate States of Blackrock and the 'rules based' WEF plunderers.
The Tuaregs would then have to content their immiserated selves with compulsory Trans Drag queen story time broadcast channels and schooling for their children, rueing their own complicity with the imperialist shaitans that brought them to this pass.
Hahaha, they have such wise leaders.

Bad OPSEC and or indiscrete conduct. Same thing that happened in Astan abd Iraq. The outfit I worked with was part of a DoD covert audit under guise of a 'crosstraining' program, to investigate circuit outfits. We were instrumental in shutting down Blackwater, for what that was worth.
Long story short, contractors exploiting locals and getting chopped up and the pieces burned and dragged through the streets, because everyone knew who and where they were.

Your definition of a complex ambush needs a rethink. Complex ambush typically is a series of events. EG vehicle hit with ied then a follow up attack on respondng units.

Interesting stuff I doubt I’d recall any of this strategy I’d likely be in total panic. When it’s actually happening to me I’d be on maximum freak out mode lol. But on the other hand I really doubt this will ever happen to me in my safe little home unless that long called for civil war breaks out. You never know do we ? If we did know we’d be heading for the hills now and stocking up on ammo and canned goods 😉
