Muhammad Ali Jinnah never declared an Islamic nation. He was not divisive. He sat in the company of intellectuals and had great men to bounce ideas off of and be inspired by.
He was liberal and progressive in his private and public life. It was disillusionment and the British that caused him to form a separate nation. Not logic. It is said that he regretted it later. I do think that he did. Most South Asians certainly do.
That does not take away his perseverance, resilience , magnificent career as a Barrister and his intellect. He was not at all conservative or traditionalist in his views. Jinnah and Nehru were called nationalists because they wanted independence.
Their nationalism has no similarity to the nationalism in Pakistan and India, today. Today, right-wing nationalism in Pakistan and India, includes a strong conservative religious identity. According to the political discourse of South Asia, today, Jinnah and Nehru would be called patriotic and progressive.
Like most intellectuals, the problems facing the country and regressive social attitudes, were not to be accepted but to be changed, monitored and eradicated. Unlike todays right-wing nationalists who make excuses for regressive actions, even if they lead to crime.
Pakistan does not have popular intellectuals today. That is why Pakistan political discourse has weakened and become regressive.
