A late comment...Not sure you heard many seagulls in the UK seemingly immigrated inlands and very often find them 'robbing' chips from people's hands around the city or market place. I have learnt a new pottery skill on making the casserole and may try out. My hands just too small and probably will have to throw 2 pieces and join them. Interesting to discover that the knob can be thrown on top of the lid! Very good! Thank you. PS: A very X'mas scene at the end of your video...Its December again...
It felt like this video was just a few short minutes long, I was so enthralled! Those are such beautiful casseroles, such detailed decorations and such beautiful and unique handles. I have your lessons in my mind and how it looks like a ballet when you throw and build. Then there’s the reality of the gorilla warfare I’m waddling in when I’m throwing and building🤣😂🤣. Beautiful dishes!
Hi videos are nice. Great quality. I had a teacher tell me that loose bats can cause the clay to go off center. Her solution was to put a pice of doubled up or trippled up grocery bag over the pin. It stopped the banging of the bat
I replaced one of the pins after I recorded the video, the other pin is stuck so other measures are necessary, tried a hammer but I think drilling it out is necessary.
The speedy parts is perfect for that music you play sometimes and yes I can guess what you cook in a casserole, I think my dad did stuff like that when I was a kid some 50 years ago :)

A current dilemma I am facing is an "S" crack in the bottoms of my large pots as they dry. Drying too quickly? Unmatched wall-to-bottom thickness? A secret sign of some sort? Thanks for any advice you can offer.
S cracks are usually when the bottom is still soft in the middle when the walls are dryer. So the bottom wants to shrink and cannot , the walls have already shrunk. So the answer is to dry slower or to cover the walls in plastic while exposing the bottom to the air. Making the bottom thicker also helps. Another trick is to compress the bottom more, which is why you see me run my finger from the wall to the center, reversing the opening pull. I hope this helps.

@@Vsmithpots Are there other causes? I have diligently tried to raise the cylinder slowly with as little clay as possible, and yet the Twist Demon appears. Perhaps faulty wedging?
Vaughn I'm curious how you glaze the lip where the lid sits. I have to wax and keep both the gallery and the edge of the lid bare of glaze but it looks as if you have them glazed. Do you put the lid up on stilts for a glaze firing?

Why do pots need to have a foot? I have never heard anyone say why they put a foot on their pots. Is it to keep it from sticking to the kiln shelf? I have wondered about that for a long time.
Hello can you use casting slip for sgraffito. I bought a pail of casting slip for moulds, wondering can I use mason stains and colour it to use a slip for sgraffito?
I think it would run off the pot since casting slip is meant to be very fluid, it has sodium silicate in it. You can try adding vinigar to it to see if it thickens it. You can also add liquid Epson Salts to thicken slip. It just needs to be thick enough to stay on the pot.
I fire them separately on stilts. I have also fired them on the body but I find the customers prefer glaze all over the lid. Just make sure the lid is not thin.
Hi Vaughan, I just made a 10” x 2 1/2” casserole dish and it cracked on the bottom side (wheel side) but not inside. Why would that happen? And when I throw a big dish and cut it off it seems to shrink and crack 😕 I’m having a hard time with that
Make sure the bottom is not too thin. Dry slowly and cut through the base twice, a day apart. I try to make sure the walls do not dry faster than the base. When you are opening up the ball of clay try to run your thumb or fingers back from the wall corner (2-3pm position) back to the center to compress the base. This evens out the stress caused from opening. I use a rubber rib to compress the base and even it out, erasing the throwing rings. All of this is is pointless if the base is too thin or dries too fast. If the rim edge dries it makes it impossible for the base to shrink so it pulls on the walls and since the walls are rigid if dry, it will crack. Hope this helps. Also make yourself a harp 18 inches across, to stretch a guitar string across, very tight. I use mine to cut through plates and platters.
Hello again hope all is well. I'm wondering can I use plainsman red clay it's almost terra cotta like for my casserole dishes and if you've used B mix 5 for casserole dishes. Want to make one for my mother in law for Christmas. I'm going to try the plainsman and see what happens,but I've heard others say they use Bmix and not sure if you've tried it or not. I'm going to make one and test it in my oven and see what happens.

It depends on the clay body, kiln shelves being flat and if the pot warps at the peak firing temperature. I fire lids on stilts and have had no problems. Also how thick the lid wall is.
I have done that, it worked. I have tried replacing the pin but this one is 35 years old and seized on. I am going to try cleaning it and putting epoxy glue around it. I thought about heating it up with a torch but that would just enlarge the pin in the hole. Then I thought I should cut it off and drill new holes. That is the option I will do.

Purely aesthetic reasons but it does help to control the glaze runs by defining where to finish the glaze edge.

I have not had luck with Bmix for oven ware. I had several customers return pieces years ago. I use #80 from Latina for ovenware

I drill two holes in the fish and screw them to the wall, they stay outside all winter. Thanks.
You drill two hole while its leather hard i suppose.
