Thanks for posting this. My first experience of an F1 car at full chatter was on Pilgrims Drop on the morning of the 1982 GP. As a kid, I actually found it a little frightening. Saw 3GPs at Brands. Still the one of the finest on the planet and puts Silverstone in the shade.
Another excellent video Barry. 1982 was a happy and a very sad season for me - the loss of Gilles killed off a lot of my interest in F1, but these cars are what I grew up watching :-)
Hi Dennis..........Yes I was a big fan of Both Gilles Villeneuve and Pironi and it was a bad year when Villeneuve was killed at Zolder and Pironi had a bid accident at Hockenheim.....those cars were pretty dangerous in 82, but the show went on and moved into a new era with the 'Turbo cars' still a very spectacular decade in in F1 with some 'Legends; driving some of the best cars in the sport..........Cheers Barry
Another great vid Barry. The DFV really encapsulates F1- though a bit before my time. That Matra V12 sounded fabulous too. My fave car sound was the Lola Lamborghini in 1989
Chris McMahon Hi Chris.....yes I agree the different sounds of the early 80's cars was great..........the sound of those cars echoing around brands was terrific.......the best sounding F1 Ever 'For me' was the Ferrari 641 of Mansell and Prost in 1990...........awesome!..........Cheers Barry
I still think the best year I went to the BGP for the greatest variation in sounds was 1991. Honda V12 & V10, Renault V10, Ferrari V12, Lamborghini V12, Judd V8 & V10, Ilmor V10, Yamaha V12, & Ford V8 (DFR & HB). All on one grid. The noise always was the biggest draw for me. Fabulous memories stood at Club corner hearing them all out of the Vale & up through Abbey...
"My fave car sound was the Lola Lamborghini in 1989" - Mine too. It sounded, I not really sure how to put it, "cleaner", maybe, than the Ferrari. There was also a really distinct smell when at the start of the 3.5l atmo era. They sure weren't using pump fuel.
Hi Samurosa1.....yes I had a very early sony betamax camera and indeed it had a great microphone to record the sound.....especially F1 cars........Regards Barry
If I remember correctly, eventual champion Keke Rosberg took the pole position at Brands Hatch with a Cosworth but stalled on the grid when the race started.
The one thing that amazes me watching this is the sheer speed these things were cornering at with the skirts and stuff fitted, they are so much quickerround PAddock than all the later cars. Insane
chunder27 Hi Chunder, Yes the 'Ground Effect' was perfected and made for very quick cornering speeds.....running very stiff suspension made the cars quite dangerous and in the end they had to change the rules so the skirts didn't touch the track.........car were checked in the pits for ride height but some teams had a system that they could lower the cars manually once out on the track.........the cars were banned in the end for safety reasons.
chunder27 Yes lots of teams had a way of lowering there cars once on track to get the skirts to touch the track and getting the full ground effect.....but it was this combined with the solid suspension that made them so dangerous.....they were Formual 1 'Go Karts' and would fly off the track if you hit a kerb too hard..
Hi Jelo....Yes I agree, the Turbo era of the 80's were more spectacular than the modern day Turbo cars of 2014.....I will be uploading footage of the 84 and 85 cars which were amazing.......Brabham BMW's of Piquet & Patrese producing 1400HP! they were spectacuar F1 Cars......Regards Barry
Barry Price i dont get as to why they cant just make them sound this good, i mean, a turbo is a turbo yeah and it sort of muffles the exhaust, but the 80's just showed how awesome it could sound!
@@BarryPrice1959 today's turbos sounds to sterile or clinical. They are harnessing all that sound energy for more power I guess. The turbos from back in the day just sounded PURELY RAW and unhinged.
Barry, do you know any other guys who have amateur footage like this on youtube? This stuff I can watch over and over, the sound of that Matra!! Lovely. Even though the car was awful!
Hi Chunder, As far as I know not much footage like this has been published on You Tube, in those days you did not see many people with video cameras...I seemed to be the only one filming the F1 cars........My footage is just 'as the fans see it' and heard it!........yes that Matra sounded fantastic, it even looks quite quick........as far a I can tell this is 'Unique' footage of the one of the best era's in Formula 1...........Feel free to share if you know any like minded F1 Fans..........Cheers Barry
Thanks Dan.......Yes I got on my mates shoulders to get the shots under the bridge........its the kind of thing we used to do back then........now Brands is surrounded by high Fencing so no point in taking a camera there anymore............Regards Barry
never do the historic f1 go as fast as these are demonstrating. 1.09 was pole in 82, the same car can manage 1.19 in a historic f1 race at best, I know the track has altered slightly since so maybe 2 to 3 seconds slower nowadays at a guess but still a big gap, what are the factors? i dont think skirts are used nowadays?
Thanks For the comment John....several factors determine the lap time around the Brands Hatch GP Circuit......a couple of alterations to the track......mainly Graham Hill bend which was significantly faster back in '82' also sheene curve has been re profiled as well.Of course the drivers are not going to be as quick as the Grand Prix drivers of the 80's and the Historic series limits the amount of revs the cars can use, which is significant in comparison with the flat out running of the cars in a proper Grand Prix test, all these thing all add up over a full lap of the Brands GP circuit and looks very much like it equates to 10's per lap.........cheers Barry
That explains it very well Barry, I didnt think about the revs at all. Like you said, the drivers of the day would have been a bit more on the limit. My first ever gp I went to was 1990 silverstone, I went in on my own when I was 15, can you imagine the impact some of these cars had :) like the ferrari and honda engines. I was bought up watching vscc and hscc events at oulton park from the late 70s to 1993 ish, A tall order to beat this kind of racing, I realised how captivating and good these old cars were when I heard for the first time a at that time modern f1 leyton house judd go past on its way round to the sf line-, I thought to myself, that sounded rather old fashioned but powerful, Its funny what sort of impression you get when you see modern f1 for real for the first time. a on song ferrari 246, ERA, t35 or 250f around oulton is hard to beat. You got some super videos, thanks for sharing.
I first started going to Brands in 1975........Ive watched alot of F1 there over the years and group C sportscars which I enjoyed very much, silk Cut Jaguars were a favourite......I agree the cars of the 1990's were spectacular and driven by some of the legends of the sport.....I too was at Silverstone for the GP qualifying.....I wanted to see the fastest drivers racing the fastest circuit flat out....and I sure did.......have checked this one out?......might bring back a few memorable moments......Regards Barry th-cam.com/video/MAr5oGSIJRI/w-d-xo.html
The cars are older, so their value is higher and they are more difficult to repair these days. And Brands is a bit slower and some corners (like Graham Hill, Westfield and the corner now known as Sheene's) are slower now than they were in 1982.
Cosworth DFV sound was amazing. And the hawthorn bend is spectacular.
Dr. Watson from Ulster :)
Love that DFV sound!
Best F1 video ever, hands down, thank you.
Crazy good on all levels
Epic. Best F1 cars in history!

Me too Dennis.
Gilles was the top draw in F1 .
God bless.
So good to see this. Thanks for bringing back some great memories.
Yes I miss the F1 Grand Prix's at the classic Brands Hatch GP circuit....great days and some spectacular action............cheers Barry

I'd say the greatest F1 sound came from the Ferrari Flat-12s of the 312T-T5 era.
Turbocharged engines + Ground effects + Lots of racers winning at least one Grand Prix = The best season in F1 history
Thanks Abu, yes the Turbo era was just about to start.....but with full ground effect these cars were very quick.....Regards Barry
I wouldn't say 'the best' - we lost the great Gilles that year...
Damn...... That bridge shot at the end.....
i m looking for this kind of footage since many years!thank you very much!
sickyy lyo Your welcome Sickyy Im glad I was able to share the footage after all these years......Regards Barry

McLaren, Ligier and Arrows cars in this footage use Ford Cosworth, atmospheric engines. Same sound as the turbos of BMW, Renault, Ferrari and Toleman.

Τhe best sound is the Alfa Romeo , Renault and Matra Ligier engines...
The greatest of British circuits. So sad it was lost forever to that flatland known as Silverstone.

Barry Price, hi Barry it’s the DTM that’s done that on the gp loop, there’s hardly any fencing when you took your videos on gp loop

Lack of skirts is the main reason they are that much slower, plus drivers not having the team support and quality of the original ones...
That Ligier looked a pile of crap but sounded awesome
