Summarising it up,
1) The point of a party is socialising, thus whenever attending one or any similar event bring forth an out going and approachable side (smile and interact openly with people).
2) If you find someone interesting or would like to engage in a conversation with someone new, approach them amicably (preferably don't start directly by asking their name instead "we haven't met" works well but I am pretty sure we can come up with something better as well) exaggerate and tease, apply your humour, ask for topics of interests and bring up good topics to talk about such as who do you know here? Where are you from? What do you do at leisure time?
But throughout this do not forget your original character and that this is just a way to bring forward and express your personality and character to other people.
