    I really think you're going to like these new hive top feeders. These may truly be the future of bee feeders for the hobbyist beekeeper. I received two of Ceracell's newly redesigned top feeders to test out on my ten frame Langstroth hives and I'm very impressed. I've had them for several weeks now and they have performed flawlessly. If you are familiar with my channel you probably know I use or have used every style feeder under the sun so I have plenty to compare to. This has to be the cleanest and least troublesome feeder I've come across yet and the bees really take to it. Unlike the other internal feeders I use I haven't lost one bee to drowning in these feeders or gotten brood combs saturated due to feeder leaking.
    I'm very excited that Ceracell Beekeeping Supply presented me with the opportunity to help them introduce their top feeder to the US market and to some degree the world. I will put out a followup video as an announcement once they have made it to the US market.

    The following is Ceracell's write up from their web site:
    We listened to you the beekeepers. Our yellow top feeder was great, but as we all know a beehive is mounted sloping slightly down towards the front, and when feeding sugar syrup in a top feeder with a chimney cap there is always half a litre that the bees can't get to. Our new improved Blue top feeder has all the benefits of the old yellow one, but now with a patented protected corner access system. This will be the industry standard!
    Extra Heavy Duty with underside ribs for strength. Made from 100% virgin food grade plastic. This comes in the most popular medium size holding 9.5 litres. "Why blue?" you may ask. Because this is special! It is a product that stands out from everything else on the market, hence the special corner access system is patented, and we want it to stand out visually as well.
    You can use it just with the corners open, with or without corner caps, or you can also add central access. If you want the bees to also have access through the central chimney you will need to drill the size of holes you prefer. Some beekeepers like large holes, some smaller. The choice is yours. Again, you can choose whether or not to use a chimney cap to protect the bees from drowning in the syrup.
    You will need a wooden rim to support the feeder. We supply these too. And if you need sugar, well of course you can get that from Ceracell.
    Top feeders are great for feeding raw or dry white sugar in the early and mid-winter. Feeding in this way, don't use a "chimney cap" and let the bees range across the feeder. Raw sugar is considered better, as it has a bit of moisture in it already and the bees can work it and take it up. If using dry white sugar you may want to add a small damp sponge to the top feeder to give the bees some moisture to work the sugar.
    In the late winter/early spring you may want to feed a heavy syrup (2 kilos of white sugar to 1 litre of water, heated to fully dissolve). This shouldn't stimulate the queen to lay and with it being in a top feeder she shouldn't sense too much the sugar coming in. When feeding in this way, use a chimney cap to restrict the bees and prevent them from getting out in the bulk of the liquid. This will minimise drowning. If you don't have a chimney cap, you can fill the feeder with pebbles, or twigs, or some people use lots of polystyrene which will float and give the bees a place to sit above the syrup.
    Many thanks to Ceracell for sponsoring this video. Bees For Life!

    I really enjoy your videos. Wish i could start a beekeeping hobby. 2 reason why i cant. One) i live in the city so cant have hives around here, especially since i live right across from a school. Two) My mom and my sister are allergic to bees, Sister is highly allergic. Saddest part of all is, both me and my mom loves honey and since we live in south africa, its highly expensive. 500ml or 16oz cost us around, 75-130 Rand. which is around $5.83 - $10.10. Doesnt seem much to people in the US or Europe.
    And seeing the amount of honey you can make from a few hives which i saw in your 1 video that you were draining for your personal stash, i become interested in beekeeping, already have a meal worm farm which i use to give to my hedgehog.

    I have the other brand top feeder like this, exactly the same without the corner access. Can confirm both brands are great, zero drownings. Only down side is with so much surface area of open liquid, water evaporates reasonably quickly and the inner cover condense's water and will grow a little mold in mild climates like ours. Not a big deal as it wont drip on the bees. I had ants find the feeder fairly quick but cinnamon works really well at deterring them. Don't use cinnamon in rural areas, apparently it will attract the possums. My 2 (new) backyard hives took in over 60kgs of sugar in autumn and have plenty of stores going into winter, they wont need feeding again till spring so I've removed the feeders until then.

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great tip on the cinnamon. I've heard it work on ants but never heard the down side that it attract possums.

      I bought 2 early this year for my 8 frame hive and had some drowning, minor but still had drowning they are definitely NOT drowning proof. Other than a small amount of bee's drowning I like the feeders anxious to see how it'll work out feeding dry sugar this winter. Will the bees break cluster in cold winter months in Virginia? We're fixing to find out.

    Great video, we are currently working on a new design that allows ants to have access to all the varoa mites and other parasites but not actually get into the Supas. Its not as easy as it sounds. I purposfully put Meadow Ant Nests near every Bumble Bee Nester and virtually parasite free. We noticed some years back that the Ants where eating Varoa mites that had fallen from the Honey Bee Hives. If you watch Ants on the floor and you have mites then you will see them carrying the mites away. I have a video called Why Bumble Bees Need Ants if any one wants to see. You can see all my Bumble Bees are healthy and Ants on the houses :)

      Fair assessment though, I'd worry about the clear plastic parts that clip into the corners and the middle. Either they'll get lost, stepped on, or the tabs that hold it in place will break and it won't fit down properly. That would be my best guess at what fails first.

    So I've watched who knows how many vids of yours by now, and I keep wondering... With all those different hives with different queens in proximity to each other... Don't they attack other hives, or just mind their own if they're not being bothered? I'm real curious about that. :)

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes opening hives at the wrong time a robbing situation can be caused but typically they don't bother each other.

    Speaking of bee feeding... why is it so uncommon to see planted flowers around bee keeping?
    It's usually just a grass field ( i know grass contains pollen ) but it's rare to see some flowers or such planted near by.

    Got a question, what actually happens to the brood if you extract honey of a frame with brood in it? Is it just lost then?

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes usually. The eggs and larvae can get dislodged and not survive.

  • @timhaddon7071

      @GoldenLegionHoney 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      628DirtRooster yeah I hear ya. They Are pretty tough though. no bee drowning for me with them also. I'd paint them also for the southern sun. I'll try these out when available.

    • @628DirtRooster

      I'd paint them too but I wonder if they'd get damaged when you pulled them apart like how wooden boxes stick after being painted.

    • @GoldenLegionHoney
      @GoldenLegionHoney 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't paint the tops or bottoms just where the sun hits em. Even in Alaska with very little UV they were starting to yellow. Gotta paint mine lol.

    Hey there, i figure this might be a strange question, but would you ever sell any of your dead bees/other hymenopterans from removals and just everyday beekeeping? I do taxidermy and jewelry and it can be hard to find them in stock on bug websites. If not that's alright I'll keep watching regardless, just figured i'd ask! Keep up the good work!

      That's a bigger question than you think. lol Depends on where you are, how you started, what your plans are..... To be on the safe side I'll say feed them until they have plenty of capped honey stored up and they are using two deeps for brood.

I love real honey with pollen in it with a nice honey comb inside to eat. Let me know when you have honey for sale. I know the season is just beginning and cant wait to get a few jars of real honey.

    I'm not sure I know how a bee feeder works. Does it drip into the hive?

    • @richbooth8948
      @richbooth8948 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      dennys9506 No. the bees climb up through the holes and drink, then carry it back into the hive. That is why Randy mentioned the textured plastic. The texture allows them to climb and not end up in the "drink".

    • @Dirk3672_StupidYT
      @Dirk3672_StupidYT 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, you don't want free dripping into a hive. In this case, the bees come up through the corners and then proceed down the translucent plastic, which has a rough texture so the bees have grip, to where the sugar water is. The sugar water gets into the feed areas, the corners, and center box, by openings at the very bottom of the corner pieces or slits (I think I saw) in the center box.

      628DirtRooster so, using my no clue about bee keeping language, the bees would come up into the blue part of the chimney and the plastic cover part thing keeps them from drowning?
