I can understand your confusion, I share much of it. I understand a few thousand Chinese characters, so I have a bit of an advantage when trying to interpret the translated dialogue which at times can ironically have the complete opposite meaning. Having watched a lot of donghua, unexplained philosophical/mythical/historical concepts and people/places is a common theme. Chinese is the oldest continuously in use written language. They have this dense, nigh impenetrable cultural history that is continuously referenced. To further confuse matters they use the same characters, the pronunciation in say mandarin has completely changed over millennia. Compare to say Beowulf in old English, references are made in modern English because "Ne sorga, snotor guma. Selre bið æghwæm" holds no meaning for modern speakers. Each Chinese character holds multiple meanings, words are 1-5 characters (2 being mode common) that combine those meanings into further complexity. The characters used in ancient text still have those original meanings, but it can be considered archaic and only rarely used that way. This leaves you with these unfamiliar words/characters, where machine translation or a human who hasn't read these ancient texts, desperately trying to find an English equivalent. Often ending up with nonsense, hilariously if you watch each episode from different translators you'll find they'll settle on totally different words seemingly unrelated to each other. If you watch a Chinese historical drama set during The Three Kingdoms, there will be absolutely no exposition of the characters, their motives or what faction they represent. The expectation being that the audience is already intimately familiar. Its like a film about King Arthur, Merlin, Excalibur and the knights of the round table, everyone is expected to understand the premise. This donghua is particularly confusing because out of nowhere they make it clear the protagonist understands modern physics and concepts. I have a degree in physics, the Faraday cage appearance made me laugh my head off. All these mythical stories have a lightning tribulation and for years I've thought to myself "why bother with centuries of cultivation, a simple faraday cage will sort you out", never expected someone to actually do it! Having only watched this donghua, I think he's been sucked in from the modern world having already read these classic books that his new reality seems to be based on. Therefore knowing of the catastrophic ending, he is trying to minimise any cause and effect him as a butterfly flapping might have. He tries to distance himself from people he knows to be doomed, hiding his identity and refusing credit for his actions such that he'd never be written about. Joining the Heavenly Court would be like moving to Ireland prior to WW2 knowing it was largely untouched. Beyond sharing the typical mythical inspirations, Investiture of the Gods seems to be where he's getting the future predictions from. But I know nothing of that book and just found it from googling.
