  • Understanding which diamond is better CVD or HPHT (high pressure, high temperature).
What technology is being used to create both of these diamonds?
Watch the video to explore the different ways diamonds are created now in labs to make it a sustainable & eco-friendly alternative.

Correction: The CVD process actually replicates the conditions on Neptune (that famously produce diamond snow on that planet). It's HPHT that replicates Earth's mantle.
Also, CVD is actually done under a partial vacuum, i.e. lower pressure than atmospheric, not higher.

I have a doubt, Why we use graphite instead of carbon in the HPHT process?

Virendra Mehta think of carbon as the base atom, there are different ways you can stack those carbon atoms to make a structure. Graphite is just one of the structures carbon can take on. Diamond is carbon “stacked” a different way. Another form carbon can take on is Graphene. Very interesting material.

@@TwinSyndrome1 Can we use diamond seed instead of graphite ?

    • @TwinSyndrome1

Virendra Mehta to my knowledge a diamond seed is used in both HPHT and CVD synthesis. CVD growth uses CVD diamond plates with a high surface area for the carbon atoms to fall down onto the seed crystal. After methane and hydrogen slam into one another from the microwave plasma, the carbon atom from the methane falls down onto the CVD seed crystal, growing it to much larger sizes than its original seed. HPHT does a similar process but using heat/ pressure and a catalyst to rain carbon atoms down onto a seed crystal.

you can do it in a microwave. fill the microwave with methane, toss in a seed crystal, turn on the microwave for a few weeks

@@amiee7227 it can take as long as you want, probably a minimum of a week? you would probably have to purchase the methane and then open the microwave upside down and leak methane in, since it's lighter than air it will fill the microwave and push out the air
