    I learned of this example of artificial selection from a Dawkins book (The Greatest Show on Earth). I researched a bit more and found out that not only are these foxes smarter than domestic dogs, they are friendlier! I want one, but they are expensive, really, really expensive...

    Interesting. Lowered crh/acth and increased serotonin means a less stressed animal, less likely to experience fear in strange situations and thus express that as aggression.

    The silver fox example is so cool. It will be so awesome when we can domesticate any animal with genetic engineering.

      Well, we wont be able to do it to just any of them. They must first have traits which we can isolate that contribute to domestication. Some lineages are just so specialized that they have already lost or simply never even had such traits.

    That adds nicely to the TV documentary I saw on the experiments. Thank you.

    Jackson, I just found your channel....I am a lay person, A flying spaghetti monster fan. I am now a Jackson Wheat fan....Please keep making your videos.....your time making these videos is well worth it and much appreciated. This video was way to short and now I'm going to have to get off my lazy chair and go do some searching and thinking....Damn it!

    I would like to see if we can get a Great Dane version of a Domesticated Fox 🦊 and a Chihuahua version. But none of the flat nose can’t breath types.

    Thanks for the video! The only thing I would try to correct is the pronunciation of the Russian name. It is bel-YA-yev (e. g. as in 'told ya'), not bel-YE-yev. Not that it was a very serious issue, just so you know.

    Only two distinct events? I think I remember a vagueish mention of THREE basic mixtures of original genes with two different wolves and an early wolf-wilddog hybrid giving the starting stock for human breeding of dogs...

      You might be correct, but I found two events in the tech lit. If you can find the paper, I'll post it.

    All animals deserve to live with humans... if we had more people to show interest in training them to live with humans.... there would be less attacks based on confusing us for food.. and less poachers and hunters.. is always a plus

    • @kapa1611
      @kapa1611 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's not always a good idea tho.
      for example i heard about a guy in the US, that kept dozens of lions (!) and some other large cats. he obviously wasn't knowledgable enough to take care of them, so there were disease outbreaks that killed some (he kept too many cats too close together without the appropriate vet care). the guy i m talking about made a movie called "Roar", which i would recommend you check out, if you have the time. it's actually accidentally terrifying xD because the animals keep attacking the humans (especially the large cats, they seem to be attracted to dangely things, so they grab a woman's hair and a guy's jacket and don't wanna let go).
      sometimes there should be a healthy distance between us and other animals xD for their protection and for ours.

    Domesticated Evolution in Tigers Lions Foxes.. are showing progress slowly only because.. we are just now showing interest ....

    • @kapa1611
      @kapa1611 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      i would be careful with tigers and lions xD
      even if they become as domsticated as normal house cats, that still might be too dangerous. after all house cats often bite or scratch their owners. when a small cat does that it doesn't really matter, but if a lion or a tiger decided it doesn't want to be disturbed at the moment, and bit or scratched a human, that might be a more serious issue

    Not true of horses or cats. Cats are very independent. But horses want their mommies & daddies.

      Dogs and horses have masters, cats have slaves, I know, I my cat allows me to serve her.

      Dogs and Cats are predators, basically all other domesticated animals are prey... of course there are some differences in the behavior. Additionally Dogs are social hunters and cats usually are solitary stalkers (with a few exceptions like female lions hunting as group). Horses and other cattle like bovines, sheep or pigs NEED the group (strength in numbers or if you so want the slightly more cynical "you do not have to run faster than the predator, only faster than the slowest prey), Dogs PREFER it, but will get along pretty fine, Cats almost always loathe it

      From the late 1920's to 1964, the USSR supported Lysenkoism, which denied natural selection (thereby rejecting Darwinian evolution) and even the gene. Lysenkoism held that if you planted crops close together, they would equally distribute the available materials (they were communists after all). Of course, this had disastrous results, causing major food shortages that killed millions.
