I've heard her say in some of her interviews that the hand movement thing came from trying to release her pent-up energy while on stage. She really didn't like performing when she started out, and she developed these movements to help her release her energy and drive home her point, at least that's how I interpreted her explanation. I love it, I think it's mesmerizing.
