    Top 20 Fougere / Barbershop Fragrances | My Favorite Classy Fougere / Barbershop Colognes
    This is my Top 20 Fougere / Barbershop Fragrances video for 2019. So first off what is a fougere fragrance? Typically fougere fragrances have the notes of lavender, geranium, oakmoss and tonka bean/coumarin. The first fougere fragrance was created in the late 1800s by Paul Parquet for Houbigant. It was called Fougere Royale. He wanted to create the scent of a fern that fern's never really had. So ferns do not have a scent so fougere means fern and so fougere fragrances are meant to smell like a fern if a fern had a scent or smell. So these fragrances featured in this video are all lavender dominant but there are some unusual cases of fragrances that are not lavender heavy so they are unique creations. Either way I love fougere, I love the way barbershop fragrances smell and I have many here that you can find out about. BTW do you like fougere fragrances? Do you love the way barbershop fragrances smell? Is there a fragrance I missed in this list that should be here? Please do let me know, please add a comment below.

    Damn I love barbershop scents so much! The nostalgia, the classic vibes you get, insane that YSL actually used to make great frags at one time kurous, M7, and of course barbershop/shaving cream king Rive Gauche. Let’s get back to being original you guys!!

    Nice choices. I happen to have picked up Chanel Boy recently. I especially love your vintage fougere choices...one of my favorites if I could recommend would be Invasion Barbare by MDCI Parfums an Oriental Fougere that I just could not be without. Great video.

    Yes!! Favortie type of smell. Just visited my local Art of Shaving to sample Penhaligons Sartorial and it's safe to say it's my new favorite. I have rive gauche and at the barbers but sartorial easily beats them out imo. Almost smells like Original Santal to me 🤔

    Fougere Royale is a masterpiece and my favourite Fougere Fragrance. Viking and Eau Sauvage Parfum are also in the same list. My most favourite fragrance is Bois Du Portugal, while not a typical Fougere, but it just screams classy old school masculine fragrance, and the best of 'em!
    P.S. Russian Leather is so underrated, very happy to see someone mention that one.

    I saw that Elysium is listed as a fougere, which brought me here. I'm very curious to look into more because I love Elysium for everyday where but feel it's so common. But Elysium is so citrusy I feel like it's nothing like what I'll be looking into

    Rive Gauche and At the Barbers are similar in vibe but very different in smell imo. I have both and feel like rive gauche smells more like an expensive shaving cream and ATB smells more well rounded, you can smell the after shave, shaving cream, the leather from the chairs, and even a slight metallic note that reminds me of a straight razor for some reason. Both awesome smells 🙂

    You should have mentioned that Azzaro Pour Homme is considered one of the all time greats by Luca Turin. Have you smelled the 2017 version? It smells a bit different than the version from a few years ago to my nose. For some reason, I had a feeling that Clubman, Brut, Old Spice, Jovan, English Leather, British Sterling, and Aqua Velva wouldn't be in this list. If you can somehow find it. try to sniff Brut Dominant. It's quite a change from their other releases.

    At the Barber's is great. Masculin Pluriel has a slight similarity, but is less sharp & fresh. Rive Gauche on the other hand (current version) is extremely disappointing for me, because it isn't fresh at all and just a sort of damp, earthy & very dated fragrance. Sadly, almost the same experience with B612. Chanel's Boy seems more like Lady-Boy...
    Le Male is nothing I would wear, but definitely a very modern & iconic interpretation of a Fougère.
    I think I have to try some Memo fragrances!

    Other Fougères (the best olfactive family !) : Narciso Rodriguez for Him (the original 2007 EDT) : so good, so unique, so underrated...everyone should try it...in my top 3 IMO
    Dolce & Gabanna pour Homme (The 2012 EDT) : the king of soapiness ! Quite underrated as well
    Paco Rabanne pour Homme : this one is the absolute classic Fougère, better than Azzaro pour Homme hands down IMO
    Kouros : even if I don't totally see it as a Fougère with its multiple notes, how to not mention the king ? :)
    + other big classics such as Tsar, Drakkar Noir, the very first Lacoste, the green Ralf Lauren, 1881...

    My favorite old school one is VC&A Tsar and my favorite modern one is Histoires de Parfums 1725.

    One of my favorite fougere was Victors Acqua Di Selva from the 80’s. It was diluted by Visconti and then recently changed all together. Missing are the strong opening oakmoss, lemon, geranium notes to the point that there is no longer a reason to purchase. BUT I’ve been experimenting with essential oils to try and reproduce that green opening note for myself. And so I have made a concoction of oakmoss, pine, balsam fir needle and mint but something significant is missing. Any thoughts or suggestions? I purchased a vintage bottle of the Victor formula which I’m waiting on so I can try and figure what green note is missing from my formulation. What is that super-forestry ingredient that I’m looking for?

    I still don't understand the whole "fern like" thing. Ferns don't have a scent? To me they do, lol. And they don't smell like lavender or geraniums lol.

    • @ThePerfumeGuy
      @ThePerfumeGuy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have a stronger nose then as I don't smell anything except for slight light woody hay like nothing! ;)

      Smelling Great Fragrance Reviews I spent a lot of time in the woods / creek area of my neighborhood when I was a kid, and especially after it rained, the fern plants all had a very distinct smell, different from the other plants and the woods area as a whole.

    • @ThePerfumeGuy
      @ThePerfumeGuy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm I'll try again. The many times I smelled them nothing. :(
      Unfortunately we can't go back in time to tell Paul Parquet about the fern's didn't have a smell otherwise this genre wouldn't exist! ;)

    I really like the YSL Rive Gauche, (I have the updated version but even that can be hard to find)
    would you recommend any from your list or others wise that are very similar?

    • @ThePerfumeGuy
      @ThePerfumeGuy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Rive Gauche Pour Homme is discontinued! It's been removed from the YSL website. At least from the USA website. I would try Maison Margiela At The Barber's in the same price range but they aren't very close. Similar idea though.

      @@ThePerfumeGuy Ah that stinks but that is what I figured. I was hoping there was something that smelled very similar.
      I have about half a bottle left, I might have to try to stock up!
