Self worth is a big theme in Buffy, I think this episode Really demonstrated how their parents literally left them with nothing inside. Unfortunately when we're hard on ourselves, it can lead to us being hard on others. Definitely related, it's sad to think how many do. We all have a lot more worth than we imagine. And it's important to find a sense of it, and not from something that can be taken like a gift. It's you.

In Buffy's case, she does have an issue with Self-Worth [but, I think Xan definitely, does too -- the diff is that Buffy can overcome her own selfishness because it's a duty to the world -- a human would only THINK that they'd choose right, until the actual circumstance is presented, and then they'd make excuses for why they know wrong could be right] .
I don't want to share too much because spoilers. But - she may be the only Slayer who actually examines who she is - how she feels - including the natural implication that she's better than other people, because she's still human [including BTVS, S3, E17 -- it may appear a one-off, but I've noticed that "stray thoughts" get followed up on in future stories- especially in S6-7, but she's still struggling between "I'm the Slayer - so naturally, I'm better" and "I'm not allowed to be better, because I'm the Slayer". Technically, you could consider Buffy superior to any of us, but that leads to Faith - so I'm not surprised that Buffy would consider this a non-starter/trap.
[Tiny spoiler -- since Liam is already in S7] - I think this is an issue with Willow [especially], Anya and Xan in future. Buffy knows that she could've folded in any number of ways over the course of her BTVS-run, but she didn't. And I think [unvoiced, of course] that she sees her friends as weak in a certain way. But she also knows deep-deep inside that if she was sure that her mom wouldn't come back as a damaged zombie, she'd risk violating 'natural law' to get her back. What makes Buffy the 'HERO' is that she can turn down the obvs temptation of getting what she REALLY wants in order to protect the world. And , more importantly, she's willing to push back against her closest friends - even family - to make sure that selfish 'want' doesn't overcome 'I want- but instinct tells me that this would turn out badly [I think, personally, that Kendra would also choose the needs of the many over the one - Faith? Not fukkin likely]'.
I really don't envy her. I think about what I might risk/give to get my mom back, and I relate it to Joyce and I'm honestly not sure that I wouldn't side with Dawn to get her back.

I really appreciate Warren as a villain, in retrospect. He’s the only villain the show ever did who you just purely hate, all the others were likeable in various ways but Warren is the only one you just hate, which I think is actually impressive in its own way - if probably less fun to watch.
In retrospect, looking back from today, Warren is also weirdly prescient. He’s basically a bitter incel who is radicalized and goes on a shooting spree, which makes the whole thing play a bit differently than when it aired.

yes! ive been trying to get this into words and you did it perfectly. dark willow and angelus were a lot more emotional to the viewers since theyre close to buffy. the master, the mayor, glory, and sometimes even adam were all funny and had good qualities. i think thats why warren needed the trio to balance that out so its not just constant annoyance

I think the main issue people have with Season Six, whether they realize it or not, is their inability to handle their favorite characters being so very imperfect. Me, it made me into an obsessed fan.

Great comment. Look at how dark TV is nowadays, and Buffy S6 was one of the first shows to really twist things. Makes sense because many of the writers have gone on to write some pretty dark “acclaimed” TV. I mean, Marti Noxon wrote Sharp Objects.

To be fair to Dawn, she is at this point about the same age Willow and Xander were in season one, and Buffy let them do all kinds of dangerous thing - so I can kind of see why she doesn't wish to be wrapped in cotton wool.
Though even in early season 1, I think Buffy didn't want them involved, if I remember correctly, but they kinda got involved.

I think peoples 'issue' with season six is that it's almost solely without a 'big bad'. The struggles in the season are all to do with life and character flaws, which is a bit of a departure from gods, snake mayors and vampires. This season went to some dark places, though I do think that most of the people that disliked it initially probably grew to enjoy it more after some time and a rewatch.
I have a handful of issues with this season and a few reasons why I don’t place it on the level of 2, 3 and 5. And there’s also a lot I really admire. But I’ll get more into all of that after the finale. However, this idea that this season is more “adult” than any other and that’s why people take issue with it is a generalization.
Well, back when this season first aired they advertised it with "Life is the Big Bad".
They could have had all these things (hard life, dark places etc) in the season and still had a big bad. This season was also extremely directionless. It felt like a string of mini-stories with a thin thread of story leading them all. It has some really good stand alone episodes but as an entire season it is in my opinion the worst and has the least rewatchability.
My problem is not that it went too dark or that it did new things with established characters. It was that it routinely mistook morbid miserabilism and wallowing in failure for some kind of profound statement of the world. Rather than saying anything meaningful about life and the world that exists beyond slaying vampires, it just settled for a kind of nihilsm that is more appropriate in the goth poetry of 90s teenager than a TV show.

The Trio were never the big bad, they merely acted as catalysts throughout the season, culminating in the murder of Tara causing Willow's descent.

I don't know if they could have run Dark Willow for half a season. They're essentially running her on pure rage. Rage burns quickly. You can maintain it for three episodes sure but ten or twelve? It would start to wear thin. Willow would have to settle into a more calculatingly destructive role. While I can be okay with a Willow high on grief and rage burning a war path through the scoobies I don't think I could be okay with a Willow plotting their destruction in a more backseat role like the previous big bads. I think Dark Willow only works in small doses.

I think a Dark Willow over half of this season could only work if it had some kind of "Dark Phoenix" angle to it.

It’s very interesting how when Willow (dark willow) is talking about willow she talks in the third person, but when she talks about Tara and what they had together she talks in the first person. Truly shows that when she taps into her feelings for Tara we see the true willow and her pain, whereas any other time it’s rage and dark magic

Speaking of Giles, I always found it weird that he didn't come to Xander and Anya's wedding. I'm sure he sent them a gift, but still.
I think his absence at the wedding makes the final scene of this episode more impactful.
I don't want it to sound bad, but I always thought Giles never cared that much for Xander. He was very annoyed when he was a teen, and that went away just slowly. They did grow, but he did have to "attend business" and flight can be expensive? Ok yeah, they couldn't get the actor lol

it was only because of the actor wasn't able to play Giles for a little while. ( I forget why ). I'm sure he would have sent them a gift. I'm surprised they didn't acknowledge it at all. its almost like the writers temporarily forgot Giles when they were writing that episode since they didn't have to and it was centered around Xander and Anya. even though he doesn't always get along with Xander and Anya, I think Giles still cares about them.
Love it or hate it, season 6 is completely worth it for "I'd like to test that theory". So glad that return wasn't spoiled for you.

This might be my favorite Buffy episode. Maybe. I _can_ say with certainty that "I'd like to test that theory" is the best final 5 sec of any tv episode I've seen. Everyone likes to watch Dark Willow more than the Trio. The Season 6 DVD box has Dark Willow on the cover, I believe.
It is really strange to me that Willow’s parents aren’t even mentioned once in S6. Willow is only 22 or 23, and they all still live in Sunnydale.

Oh yes, After Show Reactions. The girl, which earns almost 5k every month via Patreon and doesn't invest any of it back into her channel to improve the technical quality of her videos. Every smartphone camera can produce better pictures and audio than the thing she is using since the beginning^^ Usually i wouldn't care, but when someone earns that much money with watching TV shows, i somehow expect that he or she gives a little of it back. I stopped watching her..

I think it too often wallowed in human misery in the episodes between Tabula Rasa and Entropy rather than saying anything interesting or meaningful.
I binge watched episode 18-22 of season 6 for the first time yesterday(11pm till 5am) fair to say I was a wreck
When I first saw the episode, after Willow gets attacked by the mystery guest, I actually shouted "WHO???" I thought Angel?? Oz?? Amy?? I literally cheered when I saw it was Giles.
Anya becoming a vegenance demon again turned out to be REAL DAMN USEFUL! Like perfect timing. I know the Scoobies look down on & disapprove of her decision, but you know what y’all? This all worked out handy dandy in your favour dealing with Willow. 🤷🏻♂️
I'm so happy you have got to these last few episodes of season 6. They are my favorite in the series. I am probably the only person in the fandom who counts season 6 as one of their favorite seasons. Enjoy the season finale!
It has always been one of my favs as well. I think 5 is still my number one, but 3 and 6 usually flip between 2nd and 3rd favs for me
You're not. I love season 6. It's incredibly complex, deep, thought provoking, and therefore engaging. Beautifully done season, IMO.
Jennifer, Season 6 has always been my favorite. Giles coming back with his line remains one of the best things I've ever seen on television full stop.
Every time I see this moment with Giles, I immediately think of how far his character has come, from the stuffy librarian that practiced to a chair to ask someone out. All of these characters have grown so much!
The best line of the series was edited out when Buffy says "are we really going to do this?".

There's a Marvel's Avengers episode where some villains use the reality stone to recast themselves as heroes and the Avengers as villains. Captain America becomes just "The Captain" and gets a black suit without the american flag. Ironman's colour scheme is toned down so it looks like blood and rust instead of a hotrod.
But Black Widow's evil transformation involves heavier eyeliner and pale foundation and that's it. Everything else is the same.
May I just say, I absolutely LOVE how excited you get, when big things happen, Liam! Like when Willow killed Racks. Or when Giles showed up at the end! As someone who has watched the series, from start to finish 233 times(and still gets overly excited, at the same scenes/things!), it totally warms my heart! Since BTVS is my all-time favorite show, I love it when other people enjoy it, as much as I do! I know, you’ve already finished the entire series, as I’m typing this, because I’ve already watched your series finale reaction but, I just wanted to say, “Thank you!” For bringing so much joy, into my life! 💕💕💕

"I'd like to test that theory" is such a badass line it nearly makes up for the 100 million problems I have with this season.
I found these videos about the time you started the season ( I think you were on After Life). Ever since then I was waiting for two reactions. One was Once More With Feeling, and the other was Two To Go. It's perhaps not the most emotive, but the whole Dark Willow arc is brilliant and there are two little moments, just single lines really that send a shiver down my spine each and every time. 'Are we really going to do this?' and of course 'I'd like to test that theory'

Your reaction to Giles coming in at the end was a whole mood. Lol It was EXACTLY the way we all felt when that first aired. This Dark Willow episode is, hands down, my favorite episode in the whole series. Alyson was AMAZING as lead in this half of the season. Whedon's style prominently raised it's head with that trio talk with Buffy, Willow and Dawn. He never ends a season with at least one of those scenes....and I LIVE for it! Truth bombs are being dropped like fireworks, and everybody is right.
I will say that I think this episode is also secretly a hat's off thank you to the men of the show: Giles, Jonathan, and Xander. This was the first time they all took lead and did something towards saving the day.....on a Buffy show. It's as if it was a wink to the male fans, that they appreciate them as heroes too.
Wonderful reaction. It's so nice to see that even without the context of why Anthony left in Season 6, and that there was no guarantees he'd be back anytime soon, that this still lands with the original intent. A triumph.
I'd always wondered how this would be with folks watching it now, in a faster method through box sets and such. Back when it was being filmed, reading news in SFX magazine or the like, that Anthony Head was leaving the show was a real gut punch. To have him turn up at the end of the season was such a wonderful surprise, and to my knowledge, the TV networks behaved keeping in a secret as well.

Clem would be like the best babysitter for preteens or teenagers. Him and Oz. Him and Oz together would let the kids have fun but not get out of hand. And yes! I love Jono (Jonathan) in this episode (and in general) . I always wished he could have been scooby adjacent, that would have been so cool. Xander's my fave so I always want to give him hugs when he does the sad eyes. Lastly, you okay? For a second I thought you were having a stroke when Giles made his miraculous appearance. I was partly in awe and partly worried for you. Great reaction as always. ^^

I remember the first time I seen Seeing Red, Two to Go and Grave. It felt like the season was finally getting started, just as it was ending.
I agree with Liam's feelings about the trio and the lack of a big bad for most of the season but nobody can doubt the quality of most of the season 6 episodes even if they're hard to watch at times.
The acting, the scenes between Willow and Buffy, Anya and Xander, I love this finale and all the final haha

The best ending to any Buffy episode for sure imo (and probably in TV history) Giles’s “I’d like to test that theory” line was fucking iconic and I couldn’t stop screaming when I saw him the first time! And also, I agree... I wish Dark Willow took over the entirety of season 6 instead of the trio (maybe not all but perhaps a half season or something) because this arc for Willow is so complex and interesting. But at the same time, I didn’t want Tara’s death to be so soon if that were the case (if you know what I mean), but ya feel me? Great reaction as always! Looking forward for the finale ❤️❤️
season 6 was ahead of it's time. Toxic masculinity being a big bad was tough for people.

Looove your reaction Liam. Wasn't Giles' entrance the best ever!?!? It's funny, everyone who sees s6 for the first time thinks that the trio is pretty lame as the Big Bad. OK, Warren was a bit scary because he was really evil, and he was human. But the signs were there all along this season. The Big Bad was really Willow. I think Alyson Hannigan is wonderful in portraying Dark Willow. She is chillingly scary. Don't be so hard on Jonathan and Andrew, Liam. They are just naive little nerds. Andrew has one big flaw though, he was in love with Warren. How anyone could be in love with Warren is beyond me!
It's been a hell of a Ride with Buffy and here friends. Watching all this again with everyone has been insane and fun all over again. Cant wait till the finale ✊✊✊✊✊✊
It's odd I guess (going by the majority of the fandom), that if someone says Buffy--my brain goes right to season 6 and season 7. They are what I think of first.
Mine is usually the season finales and a few classic random lines, simultaneously. Then I think ‘mmm spike’ haha

Dark Willow and Angelus are the best and scariest villians because it's people who we and the other characters love! At least that's how I see it/feel it....
I've always felt the reason fans are so down on season 6 is because - with the exception of the last 4 episodes, there really is NO 'big bad.' The Trio obviously don't qualify, which is actually part of the running joke throughout the season, and Dark Willow only appears at the end of the season. In essence, the 'big bad' of Season 6 is the, main characters against themselves, which, in theory, is an interesting concept, but on the other hand, arc-building episodes in any season of ANY show are usually the least entertaining.
Yeah i think a lot of people, a) dont fully understand or dont like the theme of the season (depression, addiction, self loathing) and I guess that comes down to if you can identify with those dark feelings or not. B) because they dont like seeing the hero characters make shitty choices and do bad things (lying, leaving partners at alters, toxic relationships, abuse, addiction etc). C) they dont like that the big bad up to this point has been portrayed as the trio (showing how humans with souls can be just as bad as demons, and adding more shades of grey to the buffyverse) and how actually the big bad was emotions (like i already mentioned), or maybe more accurately poor handling of emotions/ not opening up with loved ones and lying to them and yourself until you hit bottom... Personally, I always found myself riveted by the season the first few times I watched and its always been high on my fav season list.

The big bad in Season 6 is our inner deamons - instead of a physical manifestation of evil. It isn't until Willow shows us her inner deamon via black hair and veininess do we see the outer manifestations. I think our inner deamons can be the worst! But they don't necessarily translate on film.

Willow is Buffy's spirit, as mentioned in season 4. Her and Buffy's story go hand in hand. As Buffy sank into depression this season, Willow sank into addiction. As Willow starts to fight her addiction, Buffy starts to get her fire back. And its not just this season, if you go back and rewatch season 1-6, you will keep finding the parallels. For example, in the early seasons, Willow had very little confidence in herself, and Buffy didnt accept her Slayer responsibilities. As Willow grew in confidence, Buffy became more of a slayer. Their personal lives mirror too. One of the many reasons this show is so, soooo good, and can be rewatched any number of times

"Andrew sucks." Yes. The defining moment for me is when Buffy and Warren are fighting and he cheers him: "kill her, kill her." Ugh... despicable.
Yeah he really showed his true colors there. He's such a harmless dweeb the whole season and it's not until that point when you realize just how shitty he is.

Back when I was 22 you could buy the DVD boxsets before the Buffy series had finished in the UK. I watched Smashed when it aired and had to buy the boxset because I couldn’t leave it there. Late one night, I had work in the morning but thought “oh, one more episode won’t hurt” and put on the next one, Seeing Red. 4 hours later I finally went to bed and got about 2 hours sleep. That was 18 years ago and I’m still upset about Tara.
I think "Bored now." is Willow's best line ever. Just like Buffy's "I said I didn't want to. Didn't say I wouldn't."
