I studied visual arts at University of East London, Docklands campus, served by Cyprus station. Virtually identical in appearance to Beckton Park station, immediately adjacent to Cyprus, many students and even members of staff said they'd mistakenly got off at Beckton Park, having glanced at it and thought 😳 was Cyprus.
In my final year, we had to find an organisation outside the University to work with to look at Advanced Professional Practice. My original choice was TfL, to look at how they'd get platform artworks at Cyprus and Beckton Park stations to help tell their apart. (I never heard back from them).
My plan was for Beckton Park to have a wrap-around tile mural of the Park itself, including the horse race track; Cyprus would have images of academic equipment (pens, computers, diploma scrolls, etc.)
Reminds me of an old Sorry I'll Read That Again sketch, where John Cleese was trying to say "and you can't say fairer than that", but every time he got to "fairer than that", he found that he couldn't say it!

that’s actually a great idea for something unique about the stations that would separate them visually, a shame it wasn’t done
So… the original Tube station designers were clearly on to something with their geometric patterns and colours… Roundels/signage plates are clearly not enough even for people who can read, other mnemonic devices are important, and I suspect that the only reason why people don't get completely lost in the Elizabeth Line is the fact that the central section is only a short span in an otherwise very long line, and as it's the destination for many people, their attention is heightened once they reach it (I'm guessing the on-train screens and audio announcements also help, of course).
You know it's going to be a good video when Jago starts: " The Ottoman Empire..." 😂😂😂

Being in the middle of a roundabout, with the footbridge above the platforms, I suppose it looks like a roundel from above :)
It does a bit when you look at Google Earth. However the footbridge is only within the circle, not crossing it.
At 9:30 I love how Jago has positioned the shot so the bin bag looks like the torso and legs of the lady on the billboard behind it.
Just wish we in the original Cyprus had something like the DLR

Funny how place names from abroad keep popping up in London--things like Waterloo and Savoy. I thought for years that Philippa of Hainault, the wife of Edward III, came from that place along the Central Line (of "Hainault Loop" fame)--not realizing there was a county by that name in what's now France and Belgium.
A great upload, one from my old area, i grew up in East Ham. I've had a beer or two in the Ferndale, back in the day.... i was involved with some old preserved London buses that used to live in a shed in the Royal Albert Dock, by number 11 gate. As a child, i would ride the 101 bus (first with RT's, then Routemasters) through Cyprus to North Woolwich. There were a lot of prefabs but some houses had survived the bombing, there was most of the row alongside the Ferndale, facing the Docks. One house had a little sweet shop in the front room (other such places existed in the East End right into the 70s, a shop in a normal houses' front room) that i used while exploring the area. On the other side of the road to the Ferndale was a cafe, and a bus stand.... the 147's used to run through to the Royal Albert Docks in peak hours until around 1978, and any short workings on the 101s as well.... happy days!
Centre screen at 8:08 is a ticket machine I have serviced/repaired, and again at 8:09...
Now with terrific transport & super sunsets - things are looking up 🙂
I studied my undergraduate degree at UEL from 2010-2014 so this footage gave me a hint of nostalgia. Memories of getting back to campus at 6:30am after a night in the clubs, skipping paying just to travel two stations to do my shopping at Asda and even now, going to meet my friend who still works there.
UEL was a very low rated uni back then but it was a lot of fun and cheaper than those closer to Central London and we had some great afternoons chilling.on the green by the water. I used to also spend some time watching the planes land and take off while eating lunch.
These days I'm a simple man working in retail with a masters degree in creative writing, but those were good days with fond memories.
I used to live in one of the new houses on Harper Road in Beckton in the 1980s. As I recall the house cost £27,000. Whomever had basically flattened the whole area and when they shot Full Metal Jacket there, very little, part form palm trees, was required to make it look like an authentic Vietnamese bomb site. The pub you mentioned was, erm, interesting. Access to the lounge bar was controlled by some "heavies" (not bouncers) who "looked after" certain gentlemen from the area. That said, in the back bar, the beer was good, as was the company. Also adult entertainment on the stage at the weekends,but, to borrow one of your phrases, _the less said about that the better._
I attend UEL and have to say it has one of the best university libraries. It's spacious and has the gift of overlooking the royal docks. Outside of the landing blocks (the airport doesn't run constantly throughout the day), is incredibly quiet, with just the sound skylarks catching the few remaining insects on the wing. Having lived abroad for a few of my 60 years, the present TFL set-up is one of the best in the world, especially with my 'old git' pass. Great video. Please keep them coming! Greenwich Station? With the clash of DLR and Mainline, which for residents of Kent works well.

My college's station
As a child, I used to cycle down to cross over to Wollwich and back on the ferry. We passed many post 2nd world war pre-fab houses in Cyprus that seemed to hang on and on and on.
Thanks a million! I was looking for a reason to go back to that area after a trip few years ago. Now I won't be happy until I ride 474 till the end of the route and return to town on DLR.
As a kid in Manor Park some of my friends had moved from Cyprus. The docks were still in full use and it was a great playground. Some happy memories in this video

The only reason I'd heard of Cyprus before these videos was that there was a tramway from Royal Albert Dock to Wanstead Park, via Cyprus which was interesting in that it was the only major self-contained electric tramway in North London (I'm not including those via the Kingsway Subway into South London) that wasn't converted to trolleybuses in the 1930's - I believe it was replaced by Motorbus Service 101? By the way the tramway had been part of East Ham Corporation Tramways pre LT. Thanks for the video Jago, interesting as always.

Time for my own personal funny DLR story. In the late 20th century, I happened to be visiting London when the Beckton extension had just opened and they were presumably still working out the glitches. On my very first ride out to Beckton, the train slowed down for Cyprus, drifted through the station at walking pace without stopping, and started picking up speed again when the train captain pulled the emergency brake. It seems even the train got confused after calling at Beckton Park and was having this deja vu feeling "naah, I've just been here, I don't need to stop" 🤪

Thanks for that. I'd worked in the area for around twenty years but didn't know its history.
Another aspect of the "bowl" layout to the station- which I'm sure was intentional- is that with the footbridge across the middle, the station ends up looking like a LT roundel.
It's always enlightening to hear some of the histories of these bits of London that I've barely heard of, let alone been to.
But I especially love Jago's thoroughness in the research, to the point that he finds two contradictory sources on a particular detail, which are both wrong! Keep up the good work, Mr H 👍🏼

I remember travelling there in the 1970s (my grandparents worked on the 101 bus route to North Woolwich) and all I can remember of Cyprus are the old terraced housing

The island of Cyprus was but a small part of a greater set of machinations arising out of the Congress of Berlin in 1878. It was much to protect the Suez Canal as any attempt to preserve the Ottoman Empire. It is how Cyprus became a common feature of street and pub names after this period.
I’m planning a day on the DLR on Friday , to conclude the Cs on my AtoW every oyster station project, Crossharbough, Custom House, Cutty Sark and finally…. Cyprus. I’m so looking forward to it so was thrilled to watch your video on the history of… the Mediterranean in East London .

It's a shame about that pub. There's some lovely colour footage- poss 16mm- 'Londoners Pub Talk' on you tube shot at the end of the Docklands era, in a pub, The Hand In Marigold* in Bermondsey. Lively characters reminisce. Its all so atmospheric and entertaining: mind you it would be cos they were half cut by the time the cameras started rolling. It's the real deal. Real people. Natural. How it was.
And they're dead now. All dead. Gone. The grainy film and harsh camera lighting bring it home. We can relate to it, we can feel it, but it's all gone and they're all dead now and we're all remote and insulated from it and never part of it.

I went to the UEL Docklands Campus, to study during the mid to late 2000s. And was fascinated as to know why the area was called Cyprus.
You mean this is a story of a successful, well-executed public transport expansion? Those are pretty rare. Great video.

Back in the 60s, I used to travel past Cyprus on the 101 bus twice a weekend to visit my mum. Cyprus was, by then, an absolute slum. I don't think there was a single tree, and there were no local facilities, just the walk to the very sparse N Woolwich high street.

I passed through the old Cyprus a couple of times in the late 70s and a very peculiar place it was too....half-a-dozen Victorian terraces in a jink on the main road,surrounded for miles by post-apocalyptic wasteland....I went there more recently and there were no points of recognition...I even think the main road has been diverted.
Incidentally Gallions station and hotel were still there in the 70s...they would be worth a video....

@@thomasburke2683 there are some small historical remains, a “preserved” loco or two, some which are “RIP” (rusting into pieces) and a small museum.
I think that I probably said it before, but I just LOVE Jago's voice. It's so rich and soothing. Like one of those classic BBC documentaries. Attenborough and the like, you know?
Also, given the high demand on the DLR, which is leading to them getting new single-unit, walk-through, trains, I find it interesting that there are only four-car formations in use here. Definitely a bit of an "Ouch" at seeing them wobble due to the wheel profiles not being suited for the relatively high speeds of the Beckton branch.
When it first opened it used titchy two-car trains with folding doors.

I have lived in Cyprus for 13 years now. It's a great area of London. Leafy green, quiet and only 20/25 mins to the City and West End now the Elizabeth Line is here.
I just moved away from Cyprus after 19 years there! I miss it dearly, but I feel it's changing for the worse with too much large development and increased aircraft movements every year. The boy racers making a mockery of the police every weekend on the A1020 also was a downside.
For those (like myself) not particularly familiar with Cockney rhyming slang: 'getting into a Barney' means 'getting into trouble'. 'Barney' → 'Barney Rubble' → 'trouble'.
What strikes me about London, much more than with other metropolitan areas, is that there are many areas outside the centre that often feel almost like a market town, or a quiet village in the countryside.
Not to be confused with going to Barney's, a traditional pie & mash shop in Walthamstow. Unlike most such London establishments with their lengthy histories, in some cases stretching back well over a century, Barney's was founded in 2018 by a plumber who fancied a change of career.
This was the first DLR station I ever got off at. When I was looking at universities, UEL was one I applied for. It really confused me when it's named after a country!
I guess prices today in Cyprus, 1 million pounds for a 1 room flat...

A week holidaying in Cyprus sounds very enticing, but I think I'd prefer the island in the Mediterranean sea - to the Cyprus in the London docklands!
Methinks the eco-chamber might have trouble with the docks, given that they're on about three miles per galleon.
Those railway lines fuel usage on early diesels was three miles to the Galleon.

I do remember getting off at Cyprus DLR station and there’s not much there to see. I still think that the DLR should extend to Thamesmead.
Slow development may be more long lasting than something thrown together quickly. This could be a "good thing" in the long term. Meanwhile Cyprus is reconnected to the city.

Can you still get the 101 to East Ham underground station from Cyprus
The 101 bus in Cyprus runs through Agia Napa and Protaras up to Paralimini. No idea it went to East Ham. Would save having to catch a plane, at least in one direction, if it did. Interestingly the 101 only runs in the one direction…
