      Yeah I’m from Texas and keep seeing auction horses in other states going for $10,000 give or take. They have not ridden the horse themselves and have no vet checks for soundness etc and are grade. It’s mind blowing and crazy.

    • @Jsa460
      @Jsa460 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's worse than that. 1USD is about 40-50 cents AUD. So in Australian dollars those horses here that are 1-3k would be selling for more like 10-20k by that conversion.

      @GlitterGlamGal 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Jsa460 Yep exactly right! Aussie $ is at .66 currently with conversion.
      I really cannot believe the prices there. Our last purebred arabian filly we purchased is straight egyptian and has great bloodlines.
      She is dark chestnut with a blonde mane and tail, is tall , has a great head neck, shoulder, topline and fabulous legs. So yes you can tell just looking at her that she is well bred. We own a straight egyptian black colt among all our mares and this filly is black bred. Now, she wasn’t exactly cheap by any means but compared to the $20,000-$30,000 people are paying over there for basic paddock stock, we probably would have paid $ 50,000-$60,000 easily for her in the States which is with conversion and the actual pricing differences.

    • @JeannetteShoreland
      @JeannetteShoreland 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@nicsxnin6786 Yep! Maybe the bidder has an inside track on the horse's history, but it is a high-stakes gamble at a horse auction. Without papers, no horse is over 12 years old, and claims specifying pedigreed parentage are just that....claims. Another YT channel that I follow featured 2 horses bought at auctions, one was later euthanized due to advanced navicular disease, and the other was diagnosed with shivers and is unridabe. Factor the auction price of these horses (which was considerable) plus the thousands spent on veterinary care, specialists, and diagnostic procedures and I wonder.......why? Yet horse auctions are well attended by prospective buyers who continue to indulge in this high-stakes gamble.

    FYI - Friesian/Arab crosses actually are a thing, and they are endorsed by the Friesian Horse Society. They are referred to as Turbo Friesians and are part of the Friesian Heritage Horse and Sporthorse International. Both parents must be registered as either purebred Arabian, Friesian, or Turbo and they have to meet fairly stringent conformation requirements. We see them a lot amongst the driving set. However, a Friesian/Arab cross with no paperwork is just a grade horse and will not be accepted for registry.

    • @Jsa460
      @Jsa460 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I'd imagine they'd be dual registible with the arabian society as a part bred as well if they have over a certain percentage arabian blood. I've never heard of a turbo friesian (what on earth is with that name :P ) but it sounds similar to what they were doing originally with anglo arabians.

      I feel like maybe she’s just not been following what’s been going on with the Friesian crosses. Absolutely there are just unregistered ones that aren’t worth what people think, but if you look at a lot of the dressage and jumping world, there’s actually a lot of Friesian crosses that are doing really well in their respective disciplines. I have a friend that has one and is heavily involved in that world. She took close to a year to sell one of her babies because she insisted on the right show home for him and he’s now at a high level dressage barn in California and I would be shocked if we don’t see him doing some high level dressage in the coming years.

      I've seen green Arab mares and stallions being sold for $1,500 all over California. They are purebred, but are often carriers of a bad gene so unsuitable for breeding. In fact, there is an oversupply of Arabs in general because everyone wants to breed them to a Friesan or Vanner. They never do genetic testing and the babies usually come out so sick they have to be put down. A third of all Arabs carry one or more genes for horrific diseases.They may be fairly healthy, but their offspring will be crippled or worse. Arabs got this way because Arab breeders have been totally irresponsible for the last 30 yrs.

We chose reining quarter horses, and my god. I had to "buy" the 10 horses we kept. 5 broodmares, 5 reining geldings. THE HORSE MARKET IS FLIPPING INSANE. Just quarter horses registered with the AQHA is one thing, finding ones with any sort of reining background or training with an even decent pedigree were always insanely priced. I saw multiple listings of foals from their byb inbred mares but sired by like Colonel's Smoking Gun so that obviously makes the foal worth $40k. Also, EVERY FRICKEN HORSE IN REINING IS SIRED BY COLONEL'S SMOKING GUN, your backyard ranch gelding isn't worth nearly as much as you think it is just because Gunner sired him. I finally after much searching found a grade foal for $800 and jumped to purchase him as he was a steal. My first horses in the past were like $800 each as mid teen amazing kid horses. Granted I was 12 and I’m now 37. But still. Sticker shock! lol I told my husband I’m buying this foal and he will live with us 30 years cause he’s worth gold to replace lol

    My friend just bought a really nice horse, 10 year old registered Palomino Pinto Saddlebred, a rare color for the breed. The seller had an extensive video of it trail and arena riding, bareback, crossing streams, etc. He was at a reputable reining barn, and they allowed the buyer's daughter come and try the horse out on short notice. I'm still wondering where the holes are...I've met the horse and he's quite nice! Found on a Facebook sales page BTW.

      Some breeds are heavily marketted as “exclusive breeds”, “romantic, baroque” etc. Friesians have long benefited from appearances in Hollywood Period Movies, ditto Arabians (The Black Stallion) & anything with lustrous locks or cuteness appeal like Gypsy Cobs will drag in more high $ buyers I suspect. Notwithstanding that each of these breeds have their own merits, abilities etc.

    I think this problem has always been in existence: grade horses or horses with no overtly redeeming qualities can be sold for too much because buyers aren't doing their research. Now we're just seeing inflation increasing the prices.
    I used to consign gaited horses in the early 2000s, and I priced them based on experience and, yes, color. If I had two horses who have the exact same training and temperament, and one was sorrel and one was palomino, I could add an extra $1000 to the price for the palomino one. The most expensive horse I sold was $6000, and he was TOTALLY worth it. DEAD SAFE double-registered spotted trail horse that had done endurance. He retired and died in the home I sold him to. BUT, I never sold a horse to someone without being TOTALLY honest. I refused to sell a couple of horses that had medical issues that we discovered as I was working with the horse for the sale. It was a big deal to me to make sure the horses were in safe homes, and I only lost track of a couple of them.
    I have a friend who breeds Fell Ponies, and they are the Queen's lines, so high quality. I LOVE her horses. She is selling 2-year-olds with basic training (halters, stands for farrier) for around $30K. She said it's mostly rich people who got into horses during Covid, and they're continuing the hobby. I say if she can get the money for high quality horses like that, go for it.
    We recently bought a 4.5 yo, hitch-bred, registered Percheron gelding from our trainer. He was born with her--she bought the mare in foal. He is almost 18 hands and was already working on riding and driving (VERY slowly--no riding until he was 4, and only light riding) for a discounted price, but it was a little over $10K. We did get a good price for a registered gelding that is technically for show, but we'll use him for everything. He's a great match to our Friesian/Percheron cross mare who we bought for $4500 when she was 4 weeks old--she is 8 now. They're going to be a driving team.
    I currently have a mare I paid too much for for what she was, but she has turned out to be an incredible horse after a year of once-a-week training. She is grade, so I would price her at $9500 if I were to sell her. I just won't because I've put too much into her, she is my sweetie, and she is very sensitive, so I don't want her to end up in the wrong hands.
    TL;DR: Some horses definitely aren't worth the price. I would never pay in the 10s for a grade horse, even if it can fly. However, if someone can get away with more and they are being honest and have high quality horses, I say do it. For some people, horses are their business. They need to always be forthright about their training/breeding practices and quality, but when they are, the horses are worth it.

      Fells are pretty much in the Endangered Breeds group now aren’t they. Same as Purebred Cleveland Bays. I suspect survived over recent decades only due to Royal patronage. Ordinary people not able to afford now, those UK breeds.
      Why don’t those who can afford a driving team, not drive Clevelands?
      I was shocked on a visit to Shetland Islands last year to hear that there are only about 1,000 traditional Shetland Ponied scattered through those islands now & very few breeders. 😟

    This is very sad for the horses being sold. The sellers are scamming buyers who dream of having a perfect horse while they have no horse experience. Then when they realize they can't handle it and can't sell them for what they spent, they sell them at auction to kill buyers.

There’s been major protests in the community to keep it open, but I would LOVE to hear your point of view! Could you please make a video on this topic?? They have 60+ horses on 8.5 acres, with only a handful of turnout paddocks. This isn’t even the reason they’re planning on shutting down - it’s apparently due to renovation costs. The reason the market is a LOT more expensive is because the cost to raise foals has gone up SO much. Even if you own your own property, the cost of grain, hay, vet, farrier... it's all crazy. People are trying to actually make money rather than take a loss, and that's leading to market inflation. Boarding barns are barely breaking even (usually what they make money off of is the lessons or training portion of the business) and so I think we'll see barns close as only the "elites" survive. There are a whole lot less riding schools now than when I started out.... but hey, riding was already the "sport of kings" so far be it from us normies to try and be a part of it.

      True, the cost of breeding a nice foal & raising it up to riding/training age is high, which is why traditionally buying a weanling/yearling & buyer carrying the cost of raising/training has been cheaper way to go sourcing a horse of any particular breed; but some sellers are trying to get people to overpay for youngsters, often based on its “ bloodlines” (great, great Grandsire was XYZ) or “ its a pretty colour”. 🤦🏻‍♀️

    If you think $15000 for a barrel horse is insane (it is, but...) you aren't very familiar with high end barrel horse prices, they go for truly insane amounts, although I agree, why use such a shabby pic? That friesian arab cross is really a nice looking horse, maybe not for $15000 (but then I don't have $15000), and saying she is registered if she is, is correct, this would only be an issue if they said she was purebred when she isn't. As for grade, as long as that is listed I don't see the issue, grade just means unregistered, many grade horses are purebred, and many are not. I've owned horses whose parents were registered, but they were not, so they were 'grade quarter horse'. For those that are familiar enough with the breed in question and can visually tell a horse of that breed, as long as you say they are grade there is nothing wrong with calling them 'grade quarter horse' (or arabian, or whatever), being grade, if you don't know the parents, would imply that even though they appear to be mostly one breed that doesn't rule out that there could be something else in there. If you sell a horse you should tell the new owners what you know about them (as well as what you may believe, such as breed id without confirmation), and new owners should take anything that can't be proven with a grain of salt.

Not it's breeding, not it's pedigree, not if it's "graded" or not, assuming graded is alternative English for "without papers". For another thing I would rather have a Friesian cross on any alternative registry or not even on a registry than a Friesian registered with the KFPS or FHANA. I would also pay over the odds for that horse in front of me if it wasn't on either of the latter two registries. When a breed is so critically inbred as the pedigree Friesian horse I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole. Considering what gets premies and is gekeured, the sunken backs the insane head carriage and the breeding coefficients why would anyone be looking for papers for the breed. If you find a Friesian cross that fills your requirements consider yourself extremely lucky because you're not going to find one elsewhere. Of course in the world of horse dealing there are chancers in the world who will try their luck price wise, this has being going on since time immemorial, but a good horse is a good horse and the price unless you strike it extremely lucky will reflect that too. BTW that "Friesian" isn't half badly put together. Like it? Spend the money.

    How Is the first horse flashy I was always lead to believe a flashy horse means awesome colours and pattern, the first 'friesian' looks a bit out of proportion, the poor barrel horse looks like what my mom would call an old nag, seems like that saddle is hiding something,friesian mare does not look friesian enough to be called a friesian, and I think the last one gave me a heart attack!!!! Call me an ambulance lol. I must say I LOVE this channel you make me feel like I'm not crazy! So many ridiculous people out there who think too highly of their 'skills' and 'knowledge' if only the watched you and learned from you.

    I'm guessing these prices are different by area. In Oregon the first horse you had shown would sell for about 4K max.

    "At least take good photos of it!" I will NEVER UNDERSTAND the bad photos on sell sites. Like, you see this a lot on people selling fish tanks. They'll post a photo of their filthy tank with 2'' of black moldy water complete with LITERAL DEAD FISH FLOATING IN IT and ask for a price similar to what you'd get a brand new one at the store for.. like. you realize you can charge WAY MORE if the product looks decent, right?? If it comes with a filter I'll forgive the filter looking kind of dingy cause that tends to happen but the tank itself and its stand should be pristine lol

    I wouldn't be surprised if they were all scammers. We see it a lot in dogs and cats too, just saw someone buy a mixed breed kitten for $350, the person who did the ad stole photos of a purebred Maine Coon and then the other one wasn't even a purebred Maine Coon that someone was rehoming for $50 💀I've seen a lot of puppies being sold for $2k and they have stolen photos, then when you go to purchase they want you to send the money through Western Union and as soon as you do the ad and the person disappears. It's funny though that they aren't even using photos of nice horses here or lying about them, but I still feel like asking that much money, they have to be a Western Union and run kind of person.

    Prices are so unrealistic. I watched a video of a horse auction and the majority of horses going for $30-100k or MORE. Lots of mix breed, grade, or unbroke horses for 5 figures on Dreamhorse. Whos buying them???

    Crossbred horses are just fine and can do the same jobs as a pure bred. Doesn't mean they should be priced the same. With a purebred, part of what you're paying for is the literal centuries of bloodline monitoring that went into the horse you're buying.
    I've never had a chance to own my own horse, and it's been almost a decade since I've ridden, but if I had the right place, I'd be looking for draft cross or a Morgan cross.

    I dunno if you look at Horse Plus Humane Society but they recently had and adopted out an Akal Tekke crossbreed- it's name is Black Beauty and it caused quite a stink when they said it looked like a Friesian. They meant no harm- just when they got him in intake he already had that air about him. But still even he, as a beautiful crossbreed, they simply adopted him out, not making people pay thousands. There are many horse rescues out there for people now. Adopt don't shop!

    I mean I got my horse around 14 years ago as a friesian/percheron both registered sire/dam but still mixed. BUT I got him as a yearling for like $3k. Now he's around 4th-psg but even still, the draft part of him holds him back quite a bit being super shoulder dominant. I mean would I take it back? absolutely not he is my ride or die. Would I now (that I could afford) get a warmblood from a trusted proven dressage clinician, yes. I suppose its a know what you're getting yourself into, don't get suckered into insane prices, bring a trainer as a second unbiased opinion, and just know this is a lifelong decision not an impulsive one. Took him well over 5 years with intensive full-time training to get to where he is now, and we do clinics a few times a month with top level clinicians. Cant afford that sorta thing? Reconsider owning and think about leasing. Now want a trail horse? Go find a horse for $1k and under that has a PPE and you're golden, and all horses deserve good homes regardless. Depends on what you want, but I wouldnt write off crosses entirely
    If I could attach a picture I would lol

    I love the personality, size and beauty of the Gypsy Vanner. However, i am not interested in the mites a lot of them have in the feathers and a few other things. I chose to breed for a cross. I chose to use a half registry to help them if i am ever unable to care for them properly. Same as proper training and care, iy sets them up for the best result if all of my other precautions fail and they need to be rehomed. I dont care about papers but i know others do, plus it helps establish age. Im just saying sometimes theres a good reason.

    It’s pretty bonkers how the market is right now. I know years ago I’d see some grade, kid safe jumper ponies go for insane amounts because rich parents would happily spend $30k+ for a safe horse and registration didn’t matter. Now I’m seeing these very basic trail horses going for stupid numbers. Heck, I’m seeing tons of Appaloosa and Paint weanlings going for $10k+ just because of their color.

    What’s crazy that I’ve seen is random people or like the Amish buying our completely finished, show ready reining horses that are aging out and flipping them for over 100k. They put zero effort into training them or getting them into show condition, just buy them from people in our industry, put a kid on them or teach them a few tricks then flip for insane amount of money. It’s driving the prices up for us normal people like crazy. Like Twombley and Cowgirls and Cadillacs.
