  • This was one the best storms I have seen in Australia. I got onto the storm a bit late. Video was taken with two cameras.The storm cast everything into twilight so one camera ( the one attached to windscreen) struggled with that. This first half shows inflow winds. At one stage I estimate 25-30 knots of inflow. I also drive closer to the core and make a retreat.

    Hello Michael! A week ago last Thursday on june 13, 2024 the southern half of Romania was hit by the very big strongest thunderstorm in the last 50 years, plus the Capital Romania. And the Capital of Romania, Bucharest was surrounded by two supercells, one classic, and one HP that completely took Bucharest and with a red code of storms nowcasting.

      I saw this severe outbreak on TH-cam when it impacted Hungary - assume it was same system

    • @stefan1011
      @stefan1011 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ozthunder It was not the same System form Hungary, this system with storng Thunderstorm on June 13th came form Serbia and then hit the South of Banat and exentded to the entire Southern half of Romania causing only havoc. And those form the National Meteorological Administration in Romania issued code orange and reds for strong thunderstorms. And the system with storng Thunderstorms that swept the South of Banat and exited towards Oltenia in the South West area of Romania also hit the counties in the South of Romania including the Capital of Romania, Bucharest and the system with storng Thunderstorms that hit the South half of Romania taken to the Black Sea.

    Amazing and exciting to watch, thank you for sharing. I love watching lightning videos, it's such a relief to watch amazing close up footage with zero cursing and swearing! I really hate all that stuff and it puts me off. I love how your videos are natural as well. It really gives me an idea of what it's really like. Time lapse and slo mo have their place, but it's difficult finding real time footage of lightning. Thank you for giving me a window into these amazing encounters with lightning. I am impressed! I used to have a real phobia of thunder and lightning I was petrified!!! I suppose it's understandable to fear something so powerful and untameable, and dangerous! Now however I am not so afraid. More fascinated than anything. Sure it can still be scary, but more often than not I find the sound of thunder relaxing to the point I tend to fall asleep if I am in bed. Often I have slept through storms unaware Hahahahaha So yes awesome to watch. I don't know how you manage to drive safely in a straight line with all the excitement! So incredible. Has your car ever been hit? Stupid question I know. That would be scary💥✨

    3:52/7:18 If you pause right at that frame it looks like that vehicle was getting struck by the lightning
    5:11 That lightning strike kind of looks almost exactly like the one on this wallpaper vistapointe.net/images/lightning-wallpaper-16.jpg
    5:34 That was my reaction too
    6:43 I mean it was literally right there, I hope them people who were in that car with them flashing lights were okay and not hurt by it.
    8:08 Was that lightning strike on the right the streaming from the one on the left, or were they two separate lightning strikes?
    10:08 That lightning strike came up out of nowhere

      The area is quick hot by thunderstorms in late Spring. Towns such as Pittsworth, Oaky, Dalby, Cecil Plains. Leading up to this event I am uncertain about storm days. It is an 11 hour drive for me to this area.

    Why are supercells darker than normal cloud cover itself? Is it because of the amount of moisture in them?

    • @ozthunder
      @ozthunder  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Updraft areas tend to be dark as they are rain free and have solid cloud for thousands of feet above

  • @jaggass
    @jaggass 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is Queensland the most prone area of Australia for supercell thunderstorms? Ive seen af few spectacular storms in NSW too.

    • @ozthunder
      @ozthunder  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Darling Downs QLD and Coastal NE NSW. Both these areas benefit from the position of the sub tropical jet, While far southern NSW and Victoria will sometimes get supercells with the polar jet. Places like Sydney always seem to sit between the two.

    • @Strawhataviation
      @Strawhataviation 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ozthunder I can assure u that in spring and summer, large thunderstorms like supercells aren't uncommon here in Sydney. From what I remember in 2023 there were 7 powerful thunderstorms in spring and summer, 5 of which were associated with an outbreak of supercells under anvil clouds

    • @ozthunder
      @ozthunder  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Strawhataviation I am based in illawarra, but avoid chasing anywhere in Sydney apart from around Picton to maybe The Oaks area. True there are Supercells in Sydney Basin, but the number has been falling last few years. I will be the first to admit that my criteria for supercell is rather strict textbook - persistant rotating updraft. The problem here is the lack of a strong LLJ

    • @Strawhataviation
      @Strawhataviation 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ozthunder I can agree with everything you have said. I would like to also add that storms on the mid-southern-northern coast of Eastern Sydney, powerful storms are also very frequent in the stormier months. The storms in the East mostly form in the west usually in spring-mid summer and in late summer-autumn they form usually a few dozen km south-east over the pacific (again based off of my observations), also Im just curious, where does all the cape come from to generate powerful storms in nsw and qld?

    • @ozthunder
      @ozthunder  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Strawhataviation CAPE is a product of moisture and heat (energy), but only if it can rise into the atmosphere with instability. You can trade one for the other to a certain extent, for example very high heat can overcome a lack of moistur, but all to an extent.. In Sydney context the west of Sydney has the heat, but often not the moisture. The east may have a seabreeze providing moisture at the expense of heat. Usually storms form on the sea breeze boundary in western Sydney and as they move eastwards they often decay once hitting the cool sea breeze. This is a Spring type setup. You are correct in Autumn the mid - upper atmosphere cools, but ocean lags several months, for example its late May and offshore water is 22C, this created a strong lapse rate especially at night

  • @yoshikid1208
    @yoshikid1208 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    0:57 it a microburst inflow in when wind from the east is feeding the storm

    • @ozthunder
      @ozthunder  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Microburst and inflow are two separate things and in ways the opposite of each other. Inflow can be seen by either cloud streaming in towards the storm base, often in a line, or somethings dust being lifted and carried towards the storm base. Microburst is wind rain moving away from storm core, usually very quickly, sometimes with a classic rainfoot - see my latest video.

    Is that what its really like with storms as I noticed nothing staying in the clouds all cG lightning

    • @ozthunder
      @ozthunder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They was probably CC lightning, but the difference between this storm and most other aussie storms is this was inflow wind dominated, therefore bolts were often clear of rain.

  • @jaggass
    @jaggass 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can hear it howling.

    • @ozthunder
      @ozthunder  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Strong inflow winds, common in the USA mid west, not so much here where our storms quickly become outflow dominated.

    At the beginning it actually looked like a tornado was on the ground.

    • @ozthunder
      @ozthunder  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, but the tail scud is the moisture being lifted into the updraft. It is a good sign of a storm strengthening.

      When air is being sucked into a storms updraft, usually means a storm that is intensifying, not weakening

  • @wallyman292
    @wallyman292 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    around the 3:50 mark, a few seconds after the big bolt hits to the left of the road, look off into the distance to the right of the road. Something glows with a bright, blue-ish color for a second or so near the ground. Although it's probably a transformer, just wondering what thoughts were on whether it might be ball lightning in the distance.
