We take on another C64, and don’t dare to blame everything on the PLA !

  • This is another C64 repair video, but as usual, we try to squeeze in some useful information, even though the fault finding process on this one was rather short. The symptom or fault on this one was blank or black screen, and as usual we don’t scream PLA when we see that. We also look into testing power supplies.
I really love to do work on the C64, and I have yet to meet one that I could not repair, even though some of the ones with broken tracks and where someone has ha a go before me could be a challenge. This was a 466 board, and it’s my favorite C64, as it was the last one to officially hold an old 6581 SID instead of the newer 85 version. ( Yes I know, as always with commodore, there are exceptions )
The supplier of the power supply are www.retropowerp... and I would advice you to ask for a swap unit if it measures as bad as the one here. On amp and 4.6 Volt is just too low for a power supply that is rated for 2A.
So please watch the video to the end, I can promise that you would learn something, even though it’s not as heavy on theory as some of my other vides.

Nicely done! That fancy-schmantzy PSU might be adjustable from the inside? (It's probably a Meanwell or comparable unit inside...)

On double sided boards I usually heat the pin on the component side with a regular soldering gun while desoldering it because it happens way too often (to me at least) that it can't pull all the solder out (maybe I'm impatient - but if the other side is a plane, I can never get the solder out by just using the desoldering gun). Also you can wiggle the pin from the component side and make sure all the solder is out.

With lead solder two sided pcb are normaly quite easy, 4 layer with lead free solder is always a challenge. But it depends as you say on the ammount of copper nearby.

Did you notice that the CIA Timers didn't match? (19:18)... faulty U2...

could be, but I have lent my testharness to a neighbour so I only tested that keyboard and joysticks worked, but I hope everything works apart from the timer. This timer is not used for much, and I have used 8520 CIA's that is without timer without issues for years in my test C64. So if there is an issue We just have to make another round trip in the mail.
