      Rolex wasn't the premium brand it is today back then.
      It was more akin to a Seiko back then that's why they were selling them in military stores.

      @@mrs.chandler9384 Well, my ignorance is endless, I'm not ashamed to admit it. After all, the more I know, the more I don't know. Is it some common knowledge that US troops went through Europe on a way to Vietnam and back home? Can you prove it to me somehow or should I take your word for granted? It just seems to me counterintuitive to choose such a route while Pacific ocean has less travel distance with a lot of US bases and without the need to cross other countries' sea and air borders. Beside that, by 1960 Korean War was long over, US intervention in Vietnam didn't escalated until Johnson took an initiative in 1963, and the man in the video was probably too young to serve as a military advisor in Vietnam at the time. And he also said "I bought it in Germany when I was in the army there", not "on my way back home". But, of course, none of that directly contradicts your statement, and I would be grateful if you'll kindly prove to me, a non-American, that US troops indeed traveled through Germany on their way home from their service in Far East.

      Most seniors don't believe the increase in value for something that was purchased within their lifetime. There was much skepticism ingrained.
      To that point they really need to be educated. Otherwise they end up getting ripped off.
      Some don't consider or think of themselves as older so how can something in their lifetime be antique.

      If it was a months Army salary to buy at $120, then accounting for inflation, at $70,000 it works out about 10-15 times a months salary now. Edit Which confirms tyvek05 estimation of $7,500 is the right ballpark.

    • @danceartist8203
      @danceartist8203 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm very happy for the guy, but I honestly can't understand the enormous monetary value that is placed on items like this. If it were a singular work of art in danger of being lost forever, I can understand its monetary worth would be commensurate with keeping it safe. But a mass-produced piece of jewelry? Even adjusted for inflation, this $120 watch would still have cost less than $1000 in 2016. However unique it may be, with all the paperwork and packaging, it just doesn't make sense that its value has now been magnified 70x.
