As a child growing up, there were 2 stations on our TV, there were six of us kids, so no cable for us, any how Hockey Night in Canada was an institution in our household on Saturday Nights. I grew up watching all the greats of the late sixties/seventies. He was an amazing player! And he joined the NHL in a time where you didn't see a whole lot of European players out there on the ice. He was a true sportsman as well. God Bless you Borje, you are a true legend, you were and still are one of the best!!

I was a teenager when Borje was in his prime. That ceremony killed me. Not one player today is half the player he was.

    • @PeterCPRail8748
      @PeterCPRail8748 ปีที่แล้ว +22

He played for the love of the game, and to show North America, Europeans can play the game very well.
I would trade him in his prime for Matthews or Marner every day of the week.
His tenacity was never ending. There is a reason why he was head hunted every minute he was on the ice. Because they knew how great he was. They couldn't outplay or outskate him. So they tried to take him out.
There is a reason why he is one of the greatest leafs in history and made the top 100 players of the first 100 years of the NHL.

There is a reason why Borje is considered one of the best leafs of all time and made the top 100 players of the 1st 100 year history of the NHL.
His skill, with his unwavering drive and tenacity made him a formidable force. Schultz nailed it. We went after him because we couldn't outplay him. His play in the corners and blocking shots showed he has the heart of a lion. He had his face ripped open for God's sake resulting in 300 stiches. No wonder his countryman call him King.
A consumate professional and a gentleman still showing his strength and unwavering tenacity fighting the fight of his life with grace.
My our current crop of Leafs take this to heart, watch a few more highlight reals of King Salming and realize what the Blue and white means to not just the player, but the city and its fans. Maybe then they can use this to turn the season around, forget about the paycheck. Play for the love of the game, your teammate and the crest on your chest. God knows Borje did that in spades.
His love of the game and drive to meet the highest competition head on has paved the way for 1000s of Europeans since to play in the NHL. Making it truly the top league in the world.
Borje you where always one of my favourite Leafs, and always will be. In my eyes you are in the top 30 all time players in NHL history. Although I became a hockey fan as a Polish immigrant in 87, watching you at the tail end of your career and highlights from your prime always put a smile on my face.

Like many of us.... Borje was one of the very first hockey players we ever knew and heard of... we were young Maple Leafs fans. We listened to our dads and uncles who would go on and on about the players and Salming was one of them. I still remember these times from my childhood and I think thats a reason why this hurts so much. Tiger sitting in silence taking it all in with tears in his eyes, Sittler very emotional for his team mate, his friend and brother. Life is precious.

I was born in 1971 so I was too young to remember his early seasons in Toronto. But I do vividly remember the 1980's when The King was the only reason to even watch the dreadful Leaf teams.
He gets a lot of praise (deservedly so) for being a pioneer, although to a certain degree that overshadows just what a terrific hockey player he truly was. Borje could do it all. In his later years he concentrated more on his own end of the ice, but man he could still make a tape-to-tape breakout pass. The best shot blocker I've ever seen, he was fearless.
Borje Salming was my childhood idol growing up. I can't reminisce about my youth without thinking of him. I pray for him and his family. I hope the Swedish people realize just how much Borje Salming is loved in Canada. In my eyes, he'll always be the King.

Wonderful and very emotional ceremony. I was fortunate to be at the game and there were very few dry eyes when I looked around. It was hard to not tear up in the stands. As a young adult who became a leafs fan growing up watching Mats Sundin I can’t help but feel like I missed out watching Borje play. Borje is the epitome of a hockey player and what it meant to be a Maple Leaf in those days. Every single player regardless of age or skill level should admire Borje Salming. Keep fighting Borje, Toronto is with you.

It is not out of respect for the disease, because Börje has always & will always be followed by beautiful, admiring words, from everyone who has seen him play, or heard him speak. It is so, that so rarely do we get to meet a person who is completely devoid of evil, who only radiates warmth, truth & goodness.
Börje is such a rare person.

A true legend and pride for all of us in Sweden. I remember as a little kid watching him get that standing ovation from the Canadian fans when Sweden was to play Canada at the Canada Cup in 1976. I also remember meeting him in person just a few years back, humble, friendly and fun as he always is and he looked as if he could join any team still with that remarkable physique of his. Even though I'm much younger, I felt like as if I was an old man standing next to him. It's sad to see this horrible disease grabbing a hold of him, but it won't break his spirit. He is for sure one of the strongest human beings out there. Nothing but love and respect for him, my childhood hero. Leafs fans call him King, I always refer to him as God of hockey. Totally flawless and such an inspiration.
