  • In Japan, the current Phantom fleet is at the end of 2019 at the end of its career within the Japan Air Self Defense Force (JASDF). The successor to the Phantom will be the Lockheed-Martin F-35 Lightning II in Japan. The Phantoms have served with the Japanese Air Force for over 45 years and have flown in eight squadrons during their service. After the last recce RF-4E(J) Kai were phased out at the end of March 2020, the 301 Hikotai is the only unit that still flies with the F-4EJ Kai. After the retirement of the type, the Phantom can only be admired in the museum and on the photos and videos taken by the many fans in recent years. After 45 years of loyal service in the JASDF, the Samurai Phantoms will therefore be taking off for the last time in 2020 and will land definitively. This video is made at the end of 2019 when the Phantoms were still going strong. Legends will never die....................

My grandpa who was in WWII flew one of these right as Japan put them in service. He flew the Zero as his first fighter than the F4 into retirement. Living through the entire Golden Age of aviation.

@@AlexvanNoije i believe we were the last country to retire our F4s. I believe Greece and Germany were the last two before we gradually did. As of this year in March, they're all retired. If a war were to break out, I bet a limited few could be pressed back in service as BVR assistance.

@@orneryokinawan4529 in Greece and Turkey they are still operational. In Germany they were already in 2013 replaced by the Eurofighter. Also South Korea is still operating some Phantoms! But Japan was indeed the last user in the world who retired the RF-4 recce versions.

et rid of them, should have gone 20 years ago. Whats wrong with the Japanese airforce. Up grading now, so slow. Japan needed a kick up the arse about 2000. Japan is still waiting for the USA to help, those days have gone. Australia with a much smaller population upgrades every year. Japan designs new cars, electronics every year. Military forget it.
