Today is 2/25/2017. I just returned from seeing Ms. Opalais perform Rusalka at the Metropolitan Opera in a Simulcast at the IMAX theater in NYC. Just blown away by the performance. Ms. Opalais was perfect, the entire cast was perfect, the sets were magnificent and the interpretation and presentation of the story was fantastic. Dvorak would have been proud.
Well, I saw the same performance transmission in Poland - really wonderful. The interpretation, the setting and the direction was splendid. I would also stress the play of the singers - Ms. Opolais did turn into a half-wild, tragic nymph, others' play was alsot great (do not forget about Jeribaba:)) The performance was a success!
She gets so inside the piece, sings with confidence, a naturalness, with beauty, a sense of tragedy, so deep a longing forsaken by chance, the way of the world.
Wonderful event. I do believe the conductor can be accused of overacting. Thank you crew for not dwelling on his antics. She is so lovely to watch and sings so naturally. Thank you all who made this happen.
Excellent. Very beautiful version indeed. I think I prefer it to the version I have on disc by Renée Fleming...which is wonderful. Possibly better (to my preference anyway) is Von Stade...but best of all was the wonderful Lucia Popp. Horses for courses. They are all wonderful.
Lucia Popp is Slovak singer. Czech language is native for her as well as Slovak language is still native for much of Czechs. Remember, it was one contry and , by its way, still is. Although not officially. For Latvian is much worse to deal with that and Kristine did good work.
Jumbo. Of course.
Sorry, i like this rendition better than Fleming's. It's more natural sounding, flows better with the music. Hard to put a finger on it but i almost want to say she's got better legato. Also, although in sheer beauty of voice Fleming might be better, in the version i've heard Fleming does something wierd with the sound, sort of chews on it. Maybe it's a lingual thing, i don't know. But i didn't enjoy Fleming's rendition as much as this one, which is the only one that leaves me truely moved. I would say second is Von Stade's, but even she wasn't as emotionally one with the piece as Opolaise. Excellent!
I think it's bc of original version. Kristine's origin is Latvian, The country where long years was official Russian language, what is much closer to Czech then other world languages. Only my opinion, I'm not sure at all that I'm right.
Are you who listen to this music a person of what country ? Is a person listening to this music a person of what country ? Which international are you who listen to this music ? please tell me it . I am a Japanese contributor .
Shin-i-chi Kozima I'm 3rd generation American. My ancestors were mostly western European & native American. The first time I heard this lady's voice was her Butterfly & She was very good indeed my friend. Who do you listen/like. Etc. MUSIC WITHOUT BOUNDARIES. 🌏🌍🌎🌹👴👱 Arnold Bourbon Amaral
I have!!! And she does a great job! But in general, I think that when discussing a rendition, int this case Mme Opolais', we should discuss her particular faults and merits on her own terms, not compared to this or that singer, past or present, whom we might prefer.
Pilar have good Czech and mainly amazing pronauncion of "Ř", but each prefers different voice and each of us have own fav. Original is always very dificult and each of singers does good work.
I was most impressed when I saw Kristine sing in La Rondine at the Met. But, to me, Renee Fleming OWNS this aria. The only one who comes even close to Fleming is Flicka, Frederica Von Stade.
I agree with Esko. Fleming has a marvellous voice but her psychological interpretation of this quintessentially that of a naive, wide eyed frump. Opolais wins hands down on freshness
This was a pleasant surprise, but truth is that to begin a word with a glissando is just bad. Maybe not in other languages, but for Czech it's totally unnatural and to a native speaker it sounds funny.
Purity of tone, passion of voice, sincerity of performance, are together, in and out of this world.

+A Grzel I agree! Jamie Barton was amazing as Jezibaba
Mm
Beautiful voice, perhaps the most beautiful song ever written. Just gorgeous, song and voice. Thank you.
Wow...I've heard a lot of singers do this and she is one of the best!
Superb! Will listen to this version for days!

There are such a lot of interpretation from this aria, but this one is something special.

ethereal......kristina and Von Stade own this at the moment. Thank you Met for a performance to be remembered and treasured.
Impecable !!!
Much better than her previous 2008 version. Great improvement.

Spot on , Lucia Popp is absolutly magic in this.

like a dream ♥
Cannot wait to see her tomorrow at the Met.
Je la trouve vraiment extraordinaire, voire exceptionnelle !!
MAGNIFIQUE!!!
Don't forget about Moffo. Exquisite!
Az egyik legnépszerűbb szoprán ária.
I was prepared to love this and i do but i am puzzled by the errors in lyrics and random breaths. hope she fixes it.
Can someone please tell me which key this piece is bring sung in by this amazing performer?
"key"?
BELLA VOZ

Yes...I agree with you related to Fleming...besides this spectacular woman with those nostalgic and beautiful eyes destroyed my heart !!!!
ArtShouldBeBeautiful Her quality of voice is so much better than Flemings. Arnold Bourbon Amaral

Still say Fleming owns this aria! Renee has a colour that is very special..
Kristine Opolais on erittäin hyvä puhdasääninen sopraano. Ylittää kirkkaasti esimerkiksi Renee Flemingin
You are right Lydia, but this lass does a most credible version. -I feel she will move steadily up the ladder. Graham
Sorry, not Moffo. Meant Benackova.
ESPLENDIDA PARA RECORDAR
Then most of you have never heard Pilar Lorengar sing it

: I adore Renee Fleming... BUT... Frederica von Stade or Lucia Popp OWNS this...
You can't compare Czech version of Kristine with Czech version of Lucia Popp. For Latvian is much more dificult to sing Dvorak in original.

Sorry...but this is a student - level performance beside the really good B at the end.
