i really like all of your projects. if you allow me to make a suggestion, in many projects where timing is not critical (for example this one as it uses an RTC module), you can use the internal RC oscillator of the ATmega chip, saving you a couple of components. It is easy to do, only need to burn a different bootloader(or to be more precise, different fuse bits settings), but this is all done when you "burn the bootloader" from the arduino IDE. There are tutorials on the internet too. Thank you for the inspiration and best of luck fot the channel. I hope it grows bigger.
In addition to this, the dc-dc converter is completely overkill for such project not to mention fairly inefficient - it's not designed to be operated at low currents like this project needs, a few mA at most if you don't turn on the LCD backlight. At 5-10mA, that dc-dc converter is probably 70-80% efficient. It would probably make more sense to use 2 rechargeable AA or AAA batteries and use a voltage doubler chip like *7660 (ICL7660, TL7660, etc, generic chip made by lots of companies) or LM2766 or others and you'll get close to 97% efficiency. The circuit also doesn't need exact voltage, the microcontroller and the display can work with let's say 4.5v ...5.5v so doubling 2.4v...3v to around 4.5v...5v would be perfectly fine. Hell, it could run straight from 3 non-rechargeable alkaline batteries for months, without a regulator, 3 batteries give you 4.5v and that's good enough.
