    We a running 3 next gen Scania. One 6 cyl 540 hp, one V8 580 and one 650. The V8's have tandem drive. The 540 and 580 gets identical fuel mileage. The 650 consumes about 5% more fuel. We typically pull between 64 and 73 tons. I don't think the V8 is dead any time soon, at least here in Sweden. Even Scania have said that the V8's is going to be around for long time to come. They even came out with a completely new V8 lineup last year combined with new transmission. They supposed to be even more fuel efficient. Can't wait to get my hands on one.

    The Scania v8 is famous and liked, but is it really a money maker for Scania? Lots of development costs just for the V8 even in the euro6 era, but most fleet customers buy 6-cylinder engines because they save money and are powerful enough. Even many Finnish haulers pull 76 ton weights with 6-cylinder Scanias.

    Well it's a interesting thought but I think they will continue to make them even on euro 7 , the V8 engine is basically the brand of Scania, All the other brands have dropped them with euro 6 because too less people bought them, if you look at how much V8 scanias you see on the road from the next gen model it's quite a lot, I think they'll invest in euro 7 until 2035 when the EU will have those new rules against the diesel engine, but I think they'll drop the 530 although i think they will keep it until at least 2025- 27 because it's part of the new V8 engines Scania produced previous year they still invest in new technology for the V8 I think it's not really likely that Scania drops the V8 after 2027

      V8 are just waste of money. The R6 are better in every way. V8 are just outdated if youre not doing special transports. An R460 is enough for almost everything in Europe. It pulls 40 tons easily. In Germany you dont see any NG V8s. Traton (Scania, MAN and Navistar) are looking for an standard R6 Euro 7 engine for all of their brands. I wouldnt be surprised if Scania and MAN will have a 16 litre R6 Euro7 engine in 2026/2027.

    Having the V8s is already sort of a lost course if you talk efficiency compared to the 13L. But the V8 is part of Scania's "fan service" at this point. Drivers and company's like to have them because they are something to be proud of, usually resulting in loyal and paying customers, for that reason alone the V8 will most likely not go away. Scania knows of its marketing value. Im a mechanic for Scania based in Germany and one thing i have noticed about the customer base, compared to other manufacturers, is that the Trucks are loved and often tuned by there owners, backing up my argument about loyalty.

    Scania is known for making v8s so I don't think its going away anytime soon. However, I absolutely hate that all engines have become so complicated because of all the emissions equipment mandated by the govts. The last great engine from scania that isn't loaded with electronic crap was the ds14 v8😥 Almost every truck before early 2000s all had different engine configs. as well. MAN had v10s, Merc had v6s and v8 trucks, Renault was using the e9 v8 from Mack, Magirus-Deutz used to make trucks with v12, v10 and v8s, Iveco had the Turbo-Star 17L v8, while Volvo was the only one using an I6 on their top-line trucks. Now, only Tatra makes their air-cooled v8 twin turbo in the 815 for the military. Same thing here in asia, up until late 2014 we still used to get the Scania R500 in euro 3 v8 specs. Now its all straight 6.

    Hello mate ....What I heard with my Scania dealer is that Scania will not improve V8 anymore in the future and the last developement on " diesel engine" was just for the new six-on-line and tomorrow the R and D will work on the " clean " engineering : hydrogen, électric ....that's the reason why I 'm happy to have my future behind me ! 59 years old and proud to be owner of my last v8 ....
    PS : I have no lessons to give to anyone but I never refill oil till the level is at it minimum ! I always heard that if you give the habbit to refill as soon as it's missing à little bi t of oil, the engine will always ask for refilling ...
    P.S 2 : When you think about the price of à v8 ( what ? when you love you don't count ?) , we also wonder who will be able to afford one....even for an owner-driver it will become harder...

  • @vanontherun2843
    @vanontherun2843 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Now that the VAG group own Scania alongside MAN which they've owned for a long time, it's only a matter of time before they start to use common components.
    Similar to what happened when Volvo Truck bought Renault Trucks, but in that case the components from the premium Volvo trickled down to the less premium Renault, it might be the other way around for MAN/Scania.
    It's an obvious business choice for VAG management to standardise parts across both marques, economies of scale will reduce costs and boost profit.
    Scania produce their own transmissions where as MAN buy them in from ZF, I can see MAN's switching to Scania transmissions in the future to increase production numbers and reduce the unit cost, it will also reduce the numbers of ZF transmissions produced and potentially push up the cost for other marques that use that transmission (DAF + IVECO), so VAG would reduce costs while pushing costs up for some of their competition!
    They will standardise the engines and have one 13 litre range and one higher capacity range, question is will they choose to keep the V8 or use the larger MAN engine (D38?).
    They could probably use a lot of the same design if they make them all straight 6's, but I think they will keep the V8 as it's a special market and something that differentiates Scania from the rest, but then if they do choose to stick with the V8 maybe it will be available in a MAN too, or maybe they only sell MAN's with a max 13ltr engine and focus that brand on the fleet market.
    It's all about money and profit at the end of the day, the V8 will only survive if it makes business sense to keep it.

    Scania might do a new V8 with DOHC valvetrain & single cyl head, just like the new DC13 Super lineup. They won't give up that easy on their V8.

    • @stuntvist
      @stuntvist 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Probably. The difference engineering wise is minimal and the only added cost and complexity over the straight 6 would be the 2nd head. But they would be able to use all of the same tech, variable valve timing and whatnot on that to widen the powerband. The only real issue is that straight 6's are naturally almost perfectly balanced and you can run a longer stroke easier (better for low RPM power aka torque and efficiency because less cylinder surface area for same displacement so less heat losses). Given Scania is probably running a "modular" platform like most car/vehicle/engine manufacturers now they'll likely use the same basic layout and internal components on both so most of the engineering challenge, apart from the obvious layout difference, would be making the frame and cab fit both engines and a new intake + downpipe situation. Emissions are mostly just how much fuel you use (since the exhaust treatment stuff is all the same anyway) and as long as for cruising at low RPM that isn't much higher than the L6 it wouldn't be hard to meet the regulations.
      Really the only reason other manufacturers don't run non L6 layouts anymore is just because they're too lazy/cheap to bother. L6's are cheap and easy to scale and pretty hard to get wrong. It sort of feels like we're headed towards a similar situation as to that of the US, where most truck brands don't bother to do more than the bare minimum. Buy an engine from Paccar/Detroit, use the same unsynchronized fuller box or an ungodly torque converter automatic, and mount all of that on a ladder frame with axles from one of 3 different companies. You can buy new Freightliner's that have the same steering wheel you would've got on an Actros MP2, back when Mercedes were still pushing the pre-selector nonsense. I just hope we don't end up in that situation given trucking is already a hard enough job as is, wouldn't want it getting worse because manufacturers refuse to fix annoyances as companies/drivers will buy them anyway due to a lack of better options.

    News today that nuclear fusion has been achieved. May take another 50-100 years for that to come in and if not nuclear trucks, it might power up more efficient batteries.
    Volvo displacement at 16.1 is not far off Scania 16.4 - are they in the same boat for E7? If downsized with better turbos and electric motors is the trend in cars, then why not trucks.

      New engines use some oil until they bed in then oil consumption reduces.Once they reach high mileage oil consumption starts to increase again and oil pressure drops as oil leaks past worn mains and big end bearings.
